The rain had turned the leaf-litter of the north face to crimson mud. Miracle didn’t care about the mud soaking through her tactical boots. She cared about the sharp, chemical stench of silver-laced smoke burning the back of her nostrils, and the high, wet whine of a Featherhead warrior dying fifty yards out.

Two of her border guards lay still near the shattered wooden post of Watch Station Four, their throats opened clean. A third was on his back, gasping through a crushed windpipe, his throat pinned beneath the heavy tactical boot of a rogue shifter whose face was completely concealed by a matte-black ballistic mask. The intruder was shoving a heavy, iron-bound wooden cylinder into a leather satchel, ignoring the dying man beneath him.

“Drop it!”

Miracle’s command wasn’t just a voice. It was the raw, physical weight of an Alpha’s command, heavy enough to rattle the birch trees around them, vibrating through the wet soil until the leaves trembled.

The masked rogue flinched, his shoulders locking up under the authority of her voice, but he didn’t drop the chest. Instead, he drew a double-edged trench knife from his hip, the steel gleaming with a nasty coat of gray silver dust. Two more masked shifters melted out of the dark pine shadows to his left, weapons raised, closing the circle around her.

Miracle didn’t wait to be hemmed in. She lunged, ducking low under the first wild slash of silver, sweeping her leg out to take the lead attacker’s feet from beneath him.

Mud sprayed.

Bone cracked loudly as her elbow slammed directly into his sternum on the way down. Without breaking momentum, she rolled over his falling body, drawing her twin daggers in one fluid, lethal arc. The left blade caught the second rogue across the thigh, slicing clean through the knee tendons before he could even raise his weapon to block.

He went down with a choked scream, clutching his ruined leg in the dirt.

She was a blur of warm-brown skin, dark flying hair, and absolute, cold efficiency, an Alpha who fought to keep her people breathing.

The third rogue, the one clutching the iron cylinder, panicked. Realizing his men were down, he dropped the satchel and lunged straight at her blind side, aiming a silver-tipped crossbow directly at her ribcage from four feet away.

Miracle tried to pivot on her heels, but the mud gave way beneath her right boot. She caught her balance a fraction of a second too late, her posture off by an inch, her left shoulder exposed.

Crack.

The crossbow fired, the air splitting with the sharp snap of tension releasing.

The bolt never reached her.

A blur of solid, massive shadow slammed into the attacker from the right, taking him off his feet with the brutal force of a runaway semi truck. The collision tore up a five-foot furrow of mud and pine needles.

A deep, resonant rumble of pure, territorial roar vibrated straight through the soles of Miracle’s boots and rattled her teeth.

The massive intruder didn’t just disarm the rogue. He grabbed the man’s forearm and snapped his wrist like a dry twig, sending the crossbow skittering uselessly into the brush. He yanked the rogue up by the collar of his tactical vest, slammed him spine-first into the thick trunk of an oak tree with bone-splintering force, and let him drop unconscious into the mud.

Miracle raised her blades instantly, her chest heaving, blood dripping off her right elbow as she spun toward the new threat.

And froze.

The heavy roar of the rain suddenly felt muffled, distant. The stench of blood, wet dirt, and silver smoke melted away, drowned out completely by an avalanche of scent she had spent eighteen hundred nights trying to scrub out of her skin.

Cedar and Rainwater. The dark, copper tang of old danger.

“You still lead with your left,” a voice drawled.

The voice was deeper now. Rougher. Ripped raw around the edges, like he’d spent five years screaming into the wind or choking on his own voice.

He stepped out of the heavy shadow of the pines, kicking the rogue’s shattered crossbow into the brush with the toe of a worn leather boot.

Talon Cross.

He had grown absurdly broad. Six feet and four? five? inches of heavy bone and hard-packed muscle wrapped in a rain-soaked black leather jacket that looked like it had seen three different wars. A dark tangle of tattoos crawled up the thick column of his neck, disappearing beneath a jaw shadowed with heavy stubble.

A small, ragged scar split his right eyebrow, cutting through the hair, and his steel-gray eyes locked onto hers with a heat so intense it felt like an actual physical blow to her chest.

Mate.

The word didn’t enter Miracle’s mind; it exploded in her ribs.

Her wolf, a creature she had kept under iron, suffocating control for half a decade, slammed against her chest wall, howling, frantic, desperate, clawing at her insides to throw herself into his arms. The mate bond, dormant and buried beneath five years of calcified grief and burning rage, surged awake like a dying fire hit with pure oxygen.

It made her knees turn to water.

It made her mouth go completely bone-dry.

Talon took one slow, deliberate step toward her, his heavy boots sinking into the muddy ground. Rainwater dripped from his black buzz cut, tracking down the sharp line of his cheekbone and catching in his stubble.

He looked at her wet, mud-splattered face, her flashing brown eyes, and the silver blades trembling ever so slightly in her steady hands.

He looked like a man who had walked through hell just to stand in the rain with her again.

A slow, maddening, hopelessly familiar crooked smile spread across his scarred face.

“Miss me?”

Miracle didn’t pause. She didn’t weep. She didn’t ask where he’d been or why he left her to drown in pack politics five years ago.

She closed the distance between them in a heartbeat, drove her boot into the earth for balance, and threw a right hook with every single ounce of Alpha strength in her body straight into his jaw.

Crack.

The impact echoed off the wet rocks. Talon’s head snapped violently to the side. He took a single half-step back to absorb the sheer violence of the blow, his tongue working against the inside of his cheek where her knuckle had split the flesh before licking blood off his teeth and spitting it into the mud.

When he looked back down at her, the crooked smile was gone, replaced by gray eyes that burned with a dark, aching intensity.

Before she could pull her fist back to hit him again, his tattooed hand shot out, wrapping like a band of forged iron around her wrist.

He didn’t pull her closer, but he didn’t let her go either. His thumb brushed over the hot, wildly fluttering pulse point on her skin.

“Yeah,” Talon rasped, his breath hot and cedar-scented against her wet forehead. “I deserved that.”

Sharing an office in the Alpha suite was pure, concentrated torture. The oak desk in the center of the room was eight feet long, but it felt like two inches. Miracle slammed a thick stack of border patrol reports onto the dark wood, deliberately letting the hard corner graze Talon’s knuckles."Sign section four," she said, her tone clipped and icy. "And stop staring at me."Talon leaned back in his leather chair, his heavy combat boots stretched far under the desk until the toe of his boot brushed against her shin. He was twirling a heavy silver pen between his tattooed fingers, completely ignoring the mountain of logistics files sitting in front of him. His handwriting on the few forms he had signed was a jagged, messy scrawl that looked more like syndicate code than pack record-keeping."I'm not staring," he said smoothly, his eyes tracking the tight, defensive line of her shoulders. "I'm admiring the way your forehead crinkles when you're trying to figure out how to legally banish

The mountain did not care about five years of unadulterated hatred.Within twenty minutes of the border skirmish and covering the dead guards with large leaves, the clouds split open into a torrential downpour that turned the steep trails of the northern ridge into churned rivers of mud. With the heavy downpour, Miracle found herself trapped three miles up the cliffside with a man who felt like a ghost walking around in a physical body.Every step up the ridge was a quiet war. Her wolf kept thrashing against her ribs, hyper-aware of the massive footprint he left in the mud ahead of her, hyper-aware of the heavy, rhythmic sound of his breathing. The storm whipped rain sideways into her face, but it wasn't enough to wash away the memory of his thumb against her wrist or the way his steel-gray eyes had pinned her to the earth down at the watch post."The valley path is washed out, Mimi," Talon said, stopping near the edge of the tree line and wiping a mix of rainwater and blood from his
