Chapter 3

Penulis: Evil SL
“Call an ambulance! Someone call an ambulance!”

A student froze for a second before shouting in panic.

Tina was rolling on the floor in agony. Her pants were already a horrifying mess. Every small movement pulled at torn skin, and blood soaked through the fabric.

Everyone in class turned pale at the sudden disaster. Only I calmly flipped to the next page of my book and watched the scene with an indifferent expression.

The floating comments filled my vision again.

[How did this happen? Didn’t she pour the glue on Edward’s chair?]

[There’s something seriously wrong with this guy! First the note, and now the glue…]

[Does he actually know some kind of dark magic?]

Hugh stared at Tina writhing on the floor, his face drained of color. Then, he looked at me with visible fear. I raised my head and met his gaze.

“Hugh,” I said with a faint smile, “your friend seems to be in trouble. Aren’t you going to check on her?”

He shuddered. My smile alone seemed to scare him so badly that he stumbled back half a step and bumped into the corner of a desk.

He whipped his head toward me, eyes full of terror. “Edward! It was you, wasn’t it? You did something!”

I stayed seated and spread my hands innocently.

“Hugh, accusations need evidence. Everyone in class saw what happened just now. I was at least ten feet away from her. How could I have done anything? What? Do you think I can pour glue through the air?”

Hugh was left speechless. After all, everyone had seen it. I hadn’t even touched Tina. However, the sheer strangeness of the coincidence sent a chill down his spine.

That afternoon, Tina was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Rumor had it that a large piece of her skin had to be removed during the procedure, so she would probably be out of school for the rest of the semester.

Meanwhile, the rumors about me on the campus forum evolved from “scheming nerd” to “cursed guy.” According to the posts, I apparently knew some kind of black magic, and anyone who messed with me would end up unlucky.

I couldn’t help laughing when I read those ridiculous comments. Black magic? No. It was simply karma.

Due to what happened to Tina, no one in class dared to openly target me anymore. However, I could still feel it. The isolation and quiet rejection were getting worse by the day.

Hugh had also learned his lesson. He stopped confronting me directly and switched to playing the victim instead. On social media, he started posting photos of himself studying late into the night with captions such as:

[Even though I’ve suffered a lot of unfair treatment, I won’t give up on my dream.]

[Even if there’s only a one-in-ten-thousand chance, I’ll give it everything I’ve got.]

When I read those posts, I couldn’t help feeling that the harder Hugh tried, the more pitiful he looked. However, I knew exactly why he was working so hard. It was because the final decision for the graduate admission spot would be made in three days, during an open defense. This was his last chance.

Our department was only given one slot this year. Originally, it should have been mine without question. However, thanks to some maneuvering by Hugh’s aunt—and the earlier cheating incident, even though it had been cleared up—the school now had an excuse to place me under a so-called “observation period.” So, the department decided that Hugh and I would compete in a public defense, and whoever performed better would get the spot.

The day before the defense, Hugh suddenly approached the girl responsible for managing the multimedia classroom. She was another one of his admirers, and her name was Jocelyn Benjamin. The two of them whispered in the corner for quite a while. Before leaving, Hugh slipped a USB drive into Jocelyn’s hand.

At that moment, the floating comments appeared again in front of my eyes.

[Here comes the big move! The USB Hugh gave Jocelyn contains a virus. As soon as Edward plugs it into the computer, it’ll run automatically.]

[This isn’t just a simple crash either. The virus will pop up explicit videos on the screen!]

[Hahaha, that bookworm is going to be humiliated!]

I looked at the vicious plan laid out in those comments, but my expression didn’t change at all.

They wanted to sabotage my presentation? Fine. We shall see who’d end up disgraced.

Two weeks later, Hugh was formally arrested on multiple charges. In the detention center, he refused to cooperate with any of the interrogations. He had only one request: he wanted to see me. I hadn’t intended to go, but Jane said it might be worth seeing his final downfall, like closing the chapter on the misfortune he once brought into my life.Through the glass of the visitation room, I saw Hugh again. He was dressed in a prison jumpsuit, his hair dirty and disheveled. Due to the backlash from his own misfortune, his once-handsome face was covered with red, unhealing pustules, giving him a terrifying, almost grotesque appearance. The moment he saw me, he lunged toward the glass, his bloodshot eyes fixed on me.“Edward… why? How did you beat me?” He ground his teeth as he said, “I was the one who was supposed to be favored! The Heavens were on my side!”I looked at him calmly. “When have the Heavens ever been on your side? Is it because your aunt swapped your test papers, or beca

Hugh collapsed onto the floor, his face swollen like a pig’s, still desperately trying to cover the screen.“Turn it off! Turn it off! It’s fake! It’s photoshopped!” he screamed hysterically.Unfortunately, no one believed him anymore. The wail of sirens cut through the chaos at just the right moment. A few police officers strode up onto the stage.“Hugh Jackson and Wendy Reed?” one of them demanded. “You’ve been reported for theft, defamation, tampering with computer systems, and bribery. Come with us.”Seeing the police, Hugh broke down. As they led him past me, he glared at me with pure resentment in his eyes. “Edward! This is all your fault! I’m supposed to be God’s favorite child. How could Jane not help me…” he muttered under his breath.I listened to his rambling, realizing he was truly insane. Coldly, I said, “Those who do evil will meet their own end. You planted this seed yourself, and you have to bear the fruit.”Wendy was also taken away. She hung her head, defeate

At that moment, the doors of the auditorium were pushed open from the outside.A cold, clear voice rang out, instantly silencing the entire room.“Don’t you dare lay a hand on him!”Everyone froze and instinctively turned toward the entrance. Backlit by the light streaming in from outside, a tall figure in a black trench coat strode in with commanding steps. Her long hair was tied back neatly, and her presence alone filled the room. Behind her stood two lines of bodyguards dressed in black. It was Jane.Hugh’s eyes lit up immediately. He straightened his collar and forced a smile, clearly about to step forward to greet her. However, Jane didn’t even spare him a glance. Instead, she walked straight through the crowd. Her bodyguards pushed aside the security guards blocking the way as she pulled me behind her protectively. Then, she turned around. Her sharp gaze swept across the entire hall before finally landing on Wendy and Hugh, whose expressions had turned stiff.“Jane…” Hugh f

In order to make the act more convincing, Hugh went all out. He didn’t just spread the story in the group chats; he even paid to push it to the top of the campus forum.[Are wedding bells ringing soon for the campus heartthrob, Hugh Jackson, and muse, Jane Eyre? Token of love revealed!][The upcoming town hall meeting will be romantic! The academic fraud, Edward, will be publicly judged!]Even over the next few days, I couldn’t reach Jane. However, I did manage to find her flight information. Due to a violent storm, her flight had been delayed and was scheduled to land tomorrow morning, which meant that everything Hugh was saying right now was nothing more than a one-man show. The next day, I took the initiative to contact Wendy.“Ms. Reed, I’m willing to admit to my mistake.”She sounded surprised at first, but it quickly turned into arrogance.“If you’d realized that earlier, this wouldn’t have happened. Edward, as long as you’re sincere about it, the school will spare some of

The bracelet was the one my grandmother had given me on her deathbed. She used to say I was born with an unusually weak astrological chart, the kind that easily attracted evil spirits and misfortune. The bracelet, which had been passed down through our family for generations, was supposed to balance things out and allow me to live like an ordinary person. Hence, for more than ten years, I wore it constantly and never took it off until three years ago.Right before my childhood friend, Jane Eyre, was about to leave the country to study abroad, she was suddenly involved in a devastating car accident. After trying to save her for three days and three nights, the doctors told us that her condition was critical and that she probably wouldn’t survive the night. To save her, I took off the bracelet that had protected my life for years and slipped it onto Jane’s wrist while she lay in a deep coma. If the bracelet could suppress my misfortune, then it could naturally save her as well.M

The people in the photos were dressed provocatively, linking arms with different wealthy women as they entered and left a series of upscale private clubs.Next to the photos was a document titled “Academic Misconduct Report.” It listed every piece of data from my research papers. Across each page were bold red stamps that read “plagiarism” and “fabrication.” However, the most terrifying part came from the speakers.A synthesized recording began looping through the hall. “As long as there’s money, what’s a graduate admission slot worth? I stole all the data from Hugh anyway…”The voice sounded exactly like mine.Gasps rippled through the room.“Oh my god… Is that really Edward?”“You can never judge a book by its cover. He acts so upright all the time. Who knew he was doing that behind the scenes?”“That’s disgusting! Playing this during an open defense? Has he lost his mind?”“Serves him right! I always thought something about him was off. It turns out he’s been doing shady thi
