Chapter 3

Author: LaTiDo
I watched as the nozzle on the canister clicked open on its own and started spraying in all directions.

I replied coldly, "Celeste, do you have any idea how many times I concentrated that pepper extract?"

Her brow twitched.

Before she could even respond, ten of her bodyguards at the edge of the cliff suddenly collapsed, convulsing on the ground. Two of them even tumbled straight off the edge.

In the video call, Celeste, who was full of arrogance and venom a moment ago, broke into a fit of coughing.

Vincent's smirk vanished as he asked, "Celeste? What's happening? Why are they passed out?"

I seized the chance, dragging Benjamin upward with all my strength.

Ten years of mountaineering experience came in handy. I could still move sufficiently through the sinking sand.

Then, Celeste's furious voice came through the phone, hoarse but sharp. "Finnegan, you really think you're clever, don't you?"

The video feed shook violently. She grabbed a cup of water from her car and poured it over my canister, trying to block the spray.

Then, without warning, she snatched up a military shovel and swung it viciously in our direction.

I could not let go. If I did, Benjamin would fall to his death.

With him strapped to my back, I had no time to dodge. The shovel came down hard, slamming into his arm with a sickening crack.

His scream tore through the canyon as blood splattered across the sand. Then, he fell unconscious.

Celeste spat, "You filthy piece of trash! Still trying to turn Vincent against me? Let's see how many more hits you can take."

She hurled two more strikes. I gritted my teeth, dodging barely in time, pain searing through my hands as I clung to the rock face.

If Benjamin had not tried to stabilize Celeste's company, helping her calm the victims' families, he never would have been trapped in that nightmare.

I shouted into the phone, rage shaking my voice. "Celeste! Keep this up, and your brother's really going to die!"

She took a slow drag from her cigarette, exhaled a perfect smoke ring, and sneered. "You're still lying while at death's door? If you really want to save him, sign the damn papers."

"Fine! I'll sign it! It's my fault!"

Without a second of hesitation, I climbed back down, grabbed the document and pen that had been tossed into the pit, and scrawled my name.

"I signed it! Now let us go!"

Benjamin stirred awake from the jolt. He saw the signature and exploded on the spot.

"You're not even human, Celeste! I'm your brother!"

Celeste examined the document after hauling it up with a string. Then, she whipped out a throwing knife from her belt.

"Oh, still mouthing off? Guess you two need another lesson."

She aimed right at my head and threw it the moment we let our guard down.

Benjamin saw it coming. He lunged forward, blocking it with his injured arm.

The knife sliced clean through.

His arm hit the ground with a dull thud.

"No!"

My mind went blank. I tore into my pack, hands trembling, and yanked out a roll of emergency bandages.

"Hold on... just hold on. It's okay, I've got you..."

Celeste's voice oozed through the phone like poison. "Keep begging, Finnegan. Where was that mercy when Vincent was begging you to save his brother?"

Then, Vincent's face appeared beside hers, twisted in excitement. "Finish them, Celeste! Don't leave any witnesses. Kill them both!"

Benjamin was beyond feeling any pain, staring blankly at the bloody stump where his arm used to be. Not even tears came anymore.

However, Celeste was not done. She and Vincent grabbed their shovels again, dumping sand into the pit like executioners.

I tied Benjamin tightly to my back and started climbing again.

'Not this time,' I told myself.

I was not planning on dying there.

I climbed one step at a time, matching their pace, racing against the rising sand.

Then, Celeste's voice echoed coldly above. "Finnegan, I'm done playing with you."

She pulled out a fistful of throwing knives, raising them toward us with a smirk.

Vincent, panting and sweaty, tossed aside his shovel to massage her shoulders.

"Go on, Celeste. Finish them off. Skewer those two bastards."

Halfway up the pit wall, I spotted a small ledge. There was a slope just wide enough for cover.

If I could reach it, we could wait there for rescue.

Just one more step...

A flash of agony tore through my back.

Gritting my teeth, I shoved Benjamin up onto the ledge with every ounce of strength I had left, then I let go.

As I fell, the loose sand rose to meet me, swallowing me whole.

Before we left, Rory told me what Vincent had confessed. It turned out that he was in love with Celeste since childhood, but he was even more in love with the Fallow family's fortune. He knew Rory was sharp, so he went after Celeste instead. The first step was to get rid of me.At the company, he used his position to whisper poison into Celeste's ear every day, and that fool actually believed I was the kind of man who would stand by and watch someone die."Only if you're dead can he marry Celeste," Rory said. I nodded slightly, feeling a pang of pity for Benjamin. He suffered a pointless death because of such a snake. The moment I reached the door, I heard chaos inside."Celeste, you coward! You did it, but you don't dare to admit it, huh? Benjamin's death has nothing to do with me!""If you hadn't egged me on, I never would've gone after Finnegan! I never would've... I never would've killed my own brother by mistake!"Their voices grew louder, raw with rage. Then came a cr

Vincent was left speechless under Rory's barrage. He had not expected her to dig up all his dirt. The SUVs peeled away one by one.I lay on a stretcher in the ambulance, my mind replaying Benjamin's last look on an endless loop. The moment the blades came at us, a part of me had already died.Benjamin died in my arms. After that, there was not much on Earth worth sticking around for.I figured maybe I could just let go and fall into an eternal slumber that I would never wake from. Then, I heard his voice, soft and clear in my head.'Live on for my share.'I shot awake and gasped. I could not die, not anymore.I had to live for him.Rory had not left the ambulance. She called for the doctor at once."What's wrong with him? Is he okay?" she asked. The doctor checked my vitals in a panic, then breathed out when the numbers steadied."He's out of immediate danger. He just needs rest in the hospital."I worked in big factories for decades, so I could read the subtext in someo

Rory did not say a single word. She strode forward and slapped Vincent so hard he shut up immediately.Celeste did not care about anything else. She scrambled to get up and put herself between them."Rory, are you crazy? That's Vincent!" she cried.Rory yanked Celeste by the hair and forced her to stare at the cleaned face of their brother on the stretcher."Look at him. Is this a madman?" she demanded.I clung to Benjamin's hand and refused to let go. Two clean tracks of tears ran down my face. When Celeste really looked at him, she went dumbstruck."No... This can't be..."She dropped to her knees and rolled up his sleeve. The butterfly tattoo on his wrist matched the one on her own wrist exactly."It wasn't me who killed Benjamin. It was him! Finnegan swapped them! He's the one who killed Benjamin!" she shrieked, pointing at me, eyes wild.Rory moved in front of us like a shield as she replied Celeste with fury coiling in her voice, "I came straight back after receiving a

What met Celeste was a quick and decisive kick from Rory. She had never expected things to have gotten so terribly out of hand after being gone on a business trip for just a month. She barked orders and had her people haul me and Benjamin up out of the pit.Rory shoved Celeste's head against the ground and dragged her forward to see the mangled body. "Look at who you just killed!" she yelled.Celeste stood there like she'd been stunned."It's Finnegan and his brother... Rory, why are you hitting me?"Anger warred behind Rory's eyes, almost like it would take physical form."Are you blind?" she spat.Celeste blinked in confusion."Rory, you grew up with Vincent. This man is the one who killed the brother he depended on since childhood! I'm avenging Vincent's brother! That guy was just trying to pose as Benjamin. "Our real brother is probably at the amusement park waiting for the fireworks. There's no way this is him! I turned this impostor into a pincushion. Good thing I train

"Finnegan!"Benjamin had already reached the ledge, but the moment he saw the sand swallow me whole, he did not hesitate at all.He jumped straight back down. With his one remaining arm, he clawed through the sand and dragged me out, forcing me upright so I would not suffocate. However, I knew it could not last.I was too weak, and there was no way I could make it back up again."Listen to me, Benjamin. I'm not going to make it. When I go under, you stay behind me. Use me as cover. When you get out, go find Rory."Celeste's older sister, Rory Fallow, was the real head of the Fallow family. If anyone could clear my name, it was her. However, Benjamin gritted his teeth and clung to me with his remaining arm."No, Finnegan! If you die, I die! I don't want to live with that monster!"Though I was injured, I still easily overpowered him, a scion who was pampered since birth. Moreover, he had just lost and arm. I tied him tight with the rope despite his struggles. If only one of u
