Chapter 2

작가: Autumn Q
I had already gotten numb to the pain in my stomach. Instead, I felt a frost that seeped into my bones.

I could feel my life gradually fade from my fingertips.

Actually, death didn't sound like a bad idea.

If I died, I wouldn't have to endure this unjustified suffering anymore.

If I were gone, I wouldn't have to watch Dad mistake his worst enemy for a savior.

Suddenly, a piece of bread was stuffed in through the gap.

It was accompanied by a bottle half full of water.

It was from my stepbrother, Howard Fowler.

He was only eight, and he was nothing like his two-faced mother.

He pressed himself against the crack in the door as he called out to me in a whisper, "Nady, eat this. Dad's not home, and Mom's taking a nap. Nady, you're bleeding so much. Are you going to die?"

I looked at the piece of bread that had already gotten dusty. I wanted to eat it, but I didn't even have the strength to lift my hand.

I said weakly in my mind, "Thank you, Howard, but I'm not hungry. You should go. If your mom finds out, she'll spank you again."

I wasn't sure if Howard could read minds. Maybe Dad was the only person in the family who had that ability.

Howard began to cry.

He shoved his small arm through as he tried to grab me. But he couldn't reach me, no matter how hard he tried. "Nady, please don't die. I'll go talk to Dad. I'll make him let you out!"

I was reminded of my own childhood.

Mom was still alive back then. Dad hadn't received his strange ability, and Pauline wasn't in the picture yet.

When I had a fever, Dad ran almost two miles to the hospital with me on his back.

When I wanted to eat strawberries, Dad drove to the next town in the middle of the night just to get some for me.

He said I was his little princess and the most important person in the world to him.

I wondered, "When did that change? Was it the day I was diagnosed with stomach cancer? Or was it the day he suddenly woke up with the ability to read minds?"

He was convinced that he had mastered the truth and knew all about the darkest side of human nature.

He had no idea that it was all a complete inversion of reality.

I began to feel lighter.

My soul was slowly leaving my tattered body.

I saw myself sprawled at the bottom of the cage.

I could even see dark red bloodstains at the corners of my lips.

My face was ashen, and my eyes were deeply sunken. I was so emaciated that I was essentially just skin and bones.

Just like that, I died.

I passed away in the basement of my biological father's villa.

To my surprise, my final thought before I died was an apology.

I thought, "I'm sorry, Dad. I couldn't hold out until the day you can finally hear my truest thoughts. I didn't manage to expose the ugly truth behind the woman closest to you."

I drifted upward, passed through the ceiling, and arrived at the living room.

It was sunny, and the blinding light was too much for me.

In the living room, I spotted the family of three having lunch together.

A feast was laid out on the table.

There were poached halibut, grilled pork tenderloin, and sweet corn gazpacho, which was my favorite.

Dad was seated at the head of the table, and he was placing a piece of fish on Pauline's plate. "Here, you should eat more. You've done a lot for this family lately."

Pauline smiled as she accepted the piece. But inwardly, she complained, "Stupid old geezer! I'm so sick of all this clean eating. I'm not here for some diet! When that little wench dies, and I get my hands on the money, I'll get myself a boy toy or two."

Dad froze for a moment with a fork still in his hand. Then, he seemed overwhelmed with emotion.

He gazed at Pauline with deep affection and said, "Honey, you really are the perfect homemaker. You're constantly thinking of ways to help me save money, and you even want to cook for me for the rest of your life. You're the best wife anyone could ask for."

Pauline was obviously used to Dad's "nonsense". She knew that she just had to smile and play along with it. "As long as you're happy, honey."

Nearby, Howard suddenly put down his cutlery.

His eyes turned red as he looked at the food on the table. He said in a small voice, "Dad, can we share some of this with Nady? She hasn't eaten anything in the basement for days. She'll die from hunger. She's also bleeding so much that it got all over the cage."

Dad slammed his fork on the table. "Don't you ever mention that ingrate again! Die of hunger? She's a scourge that simply refuses to die! You have no idea how hard she's cursing me out in her mind. She wants me to die as soon as possible so that she can inherit my fortune!"

Startled, Howard shrank back a little and started wailing. "No! Nady won't think like that! She just told me to be a good kid so that Mom won't be mad at me. She's dying, but she's still worried about me!"

Pauline hastily threw her arms around Howard. She wiped his tears away, feigning concern as she tried to calm Dad down. "Honey, she's just a child who doesn't know any better. It's not her fault."

Dad recalled my eyes that refused to close even after death.Every single image in his mind was like a red-hot branding iron, searing itself into his heart. It would never recover.Dad stayed in the room for the whole night. When the sun came up, he got up and approached a mirror. The man in the mirror seemed to have aged overnight. His hair had grayed, and he looked like an old man nearing the end of his life.He couldn't do it anymore. He had completely lost his ability to read minds. In his eyes, the world had turned deathly silent. He tried his best to recall my voice, but he could only remember a few words."Dad, please help me. I'm in so much pain."Those words became his worst nightmare for the rest of his life.He went out of the room and made his way to the yard.He planted a tree in the yard.It was a cherry tree, which I had always wanted to plant but never had the chance to.Dad said, "Nady, when the cherries have ripened, I'll pick some for you."Sadly, I

Dad continued, "I'll make a hole in your body for every crime you missed."Plunging the boning knife into the armrest of the chair, Dad took out his phone and started an audio recording.Pauline trembled as she began. She spoke of how she seduced Dad, sowed discord between Dad and me, swapped out Dad's medication, abused me, and schemed to kill Dad to take over the family fortune.Every single detail was shockingly horrifying.Dad listened silently.Every sentence she spoke broke his heart. The "happy family" he was so proud of had turned out to be nothing but a lie.The "wonderful wife" he treasured had turned out to be a vicious snake. As for his blameless daughter who loved him the most, he had shoved her into the abyss with his own hands. The recording was complete.Dad tucked away his phone.Standing up, he took one last glance at Pauline, who looked lifeless like a corpse. "Stay here. The police will be here soon. But before then, go ahead and get a taste of the suffe

Dad looked like he hadn't heard Pauline at all.Grabbing her by the hair, he dragged her to the basement as if he were dragging a dead body."Help! He's going to kill me! Howard! Save me!" Pauline screamed.Howard was so terrified that he began to wail. He curled up in a corner of the room, too scared to move.Pauline struggled with all her might, her nails leaving trails of blood on the floor. But no matter how hard she cried or begged for mercy, Dad didn't pause for even a second. He said in his mind, "Nady, I'm sorry. I will get revenge for you. I'll send this wretched woman to the afterlife so she can kneel and apologize to you in person."…The iron door of the basement was opened once again. The pungent smell of a rotting corpse still lingered in the air.It was my rotting corpse.Pauline had a death grip on the door frame. Her nails were all broken, and her hand was covered in blood. "I'm not going in! No way! Charles, I am your wife! You can't do this to me! Please,

The liquid spilled onto the floor, bubbling with a strange white foam.Dad stared coldly at the puddle on the floor. "Fine, you don't have to drink it. But in return, tell me what exactly you put in my drink."Pauline's eyes widened. She shook her head with all her might. Dad was still gripping her chin, so her words came out muffled. "I didn't… It wasn't me…"But she was screaming in her heart, "Oh, no! He really knows! I put the drug in a hidden compartment under the bed, so how on earth did he find out? Damn it! Damn it all!"Dad let go of Pauline. She slumped onto the floor, gasping for breath. Before she could gather herself, Dad retrieved a white bottle from his pocket. He had found it at the bottom of the trash can in his study. The label was torn, but he recognized the bottle."Hallucinogen. Large doses can cause mental confusion and auditory hallucinations, and even… brain death," Dad read the words aloud.Pauline shuddered with each syllable he pronounced.Dad spa

"What have I done?" Dad held his head between his hands, his nails digging into his palms.Regret gnawed at his heart like a venomous snake. He recalled the day I had given him the tie.To him, I was thinking, "You old geezer, I'm going to strangle you to death!"So, he had cut the tie into shreds and tossed them into the trash can. He had even punished me by making me kneel in the snow for two hours. He recalled when I cried for help because of the pain in my stomach. To him, I was thinking, "Faking my illness is so much fun! I'm going to get a new phone with the money I scammed from him."And so, he had locked me up in a dog cage and withheld food and water from me.But in reality, those vicious curses never existed. What actually existed was just a poor, broken heart.Footsteps sounded at the door.It was Howard. He had his backpack on as he stood timidly at the entrance. When he saw me on the couch, his eyes instantly reddened."Nady…" Throwing his backpack away, he r

  • Misread Mind: Dad Gave My Life Away   Chapter 5

Dad said, "You were planning to burn her corpse and scatter the ashes, weren't you? You didn't want forensics to find out that she was starved to death, right?"Pauline's face instantly turned deathly pale. She subconsciously took a step backward.Dad could hear the terror in her heart ring loud and clear. "Why does he know that? Did he suddenly get smarter? Did the drugs stop working? Or did he discover something?"Dad staggered to his feet.He was holding my stiff corpse tightly in his arms. The cold sensation pricked his nerves, reminding him of the reality he could never change."Get lost," he said through gritted teeth. But Pauline still refused to give up. "Honey…""I said, get lost!" Dad suddenly roared. His voice was so terrifyingly loud that it shook some dust loose from the ceiling.Pauline screamed in fear, then scrambled out of the basement.Dad was left alone with me and the cage full of despair. With me still in his arms, Dad slowly sat back on the floor. He
