Chapter 2

作者: Snail
I sat weakly on the couch, no longer having any desire to defend myself.

But to everyone else, my silence looked more like guilt. The looks directed at me became even more contemptuous.

"What relationship do you have with Alpha Ian? Why did you stop talking?"

"What else is there to say? It's been three years since our graduation. If they really had something going on, how could none of us know?"

"She's just an ugly and delusional mixed-blood she-wolf. Did she really think an Alpha would choose her?"

Suppressed laughter and mocking whispers spread around me.

My eyes burned, and the heat rushed rapidly to my face.

I looked at Ian again. Even if he didn't want to reveal our mate bond, surely he wouldn't just sit there while his mate was being openly insulted?

But to my disappointment, he only met my eyes for a brief second before guiltily looking away.

At that moment, the mate mark on my ring finger burned with piercing pain, as if it were being scorched.

Sherry suddenly walked over to me, holding a glass of blood wine. Her scent was soft and delicate, but her eyes shone with undisguised triumph.

"Nadine, I know you've had inappropriate thoughts about Ian. But we are fated for each other. Ian and I will probably form a mate bond very soon. I hope you'll know your place and stop coveting something that doesn't belong to you."

She raised her glass and lightly clinked it against mine. "I'll drink first."

Then, she tilted her head back and drained the blood wine in one gulp. I sat there motionless, like an empty husk that had lost its soul.

Soon, Ian began making rounds to toast everyone.

When he stopped in front of me, he silently looked at me for a long while. Using the motion of clinking glasses as cover, he leaned down slightly. He lowered his voice to whisper in my ear, his tone carrying the commanding pressure unique to an Alpha.

"Nadine, be sensible. Don't embarrass her," he ordered.

I jerked my head up, but he had already looked away and turned back toward Sherry.

The two of them exchanged a conversation in soft voices. Whatever was said seemed amusing, because Ian's eyes curved faintly as he smiled.

I hadn't seen him smile like that for a very long time.

Soon, amid the crowd's loud teasing, they were pushed until their bodies were pressed against each other's.

"Go on! Kiss!"

"You must make up for the long-overdue marking ceremony!"

The cheering grew increasingly unrestrained. I closed my eyes. My chest hurt as though it were being torn apart.

Zed staggered over drunkenly. Perhaps he felt a trace of pity for me since he knew the truth.

He said, "Nadine, don't overthink it. They're... just trying to make up for the regrets of the past. You're the one he formed a mate bond with. It's only a little kiss. It won't affect anything."

He tried to defend Ian, but the feeble and powerless excuse he made sounded unconvincing even to himself.

The violent pain from my mark told me that Ian had already given his heart away. I downed glass after glass of blood wine, trying to numb the ripping pain with alcohol.

Amid the crowd's pushing and shoving, Sherry suddenly cried out and fell into Ian's arms. The two of them held each other tightly, their scents intertwining. Sherry's lips brushed the corner of Ian's mouth slightly, leaving behind her unique scent and mark.

At last, I could no longer hold back. I smashed the wineglass in my hand.

The sharp sound of shattering glass instantly drew everyone's attention. Ian seemed to snap back to his senses and quickly released Sherry.

I walked straight across the broken glass toward him.

Staring directly into his eyes, I asked word by word, "Ian, are you really not going to tell everyone what kind of relationship we share?"

The moment the words fell, the entire room went deathly silent.

Ian's muscles suddenly tensed, and faint traces of his wolf started radiating from him. He stared at me for a long time, as though weighing something.

Finally, he turned toward the crowd stiffly and spoke in a cold and rigid voice. "Indeed. I once formed a brief mate bond with Nadine."

He paused for a moment, his tone growing even colder. "But that's all in the past. We've already dissolved the bond."

Those words tore through my chest like claws.

My head snapped up at him, and I was unable to believe what I had just heard.

After I settled peacefully into the secluded mountain village, Zed still didn't fully relax. He frequently busied himself helping me adjust to my new life. Often, he came by to help me with daily chores and shielded me from all outside news. He went to great lengths to ensure none of the troubles from the Whitestone pack bothered me.As time passed and we spent more days together, he watched me gradually blend into the serene life in the village.I treated everyone with warmth and politeness. I was kind and helpful to the neighbors and never argued with anyone. Even when villagers occasionally gossiped about me behind my back, I merely smiled calmly and never took it to heart.Upon seeing all this, every prejudice Zed once held toward me disappeared completely. At last, he truly realized that I had never been some lowly she-wolf clinging desperately to others. On the contrary, I was gentle and kind, with an unyielding strength deep within me.Without even realizing it, he found h

In the days that followed, Ian completely lost interest in managing the affairs of the pack. His entire focus was devoted solely to finding me. He mobilized every connection and every bit of power the pack possessed, sending wolves everywhere to search for me and gather information. He exhausted all his energy, but he still failed to uncover even the slightest clue about my whereabouts. Day after day of fruitless searching eventually broke him.Ian went on with life aimlessly, like he was a soulless husk. Locking himself inside his room, he relied on alcohol to numb himself and escape the heart-wrenching pain tearing him apart. It didn't take long for Zed to hear about his self-destructive state. Upon learning how far Ian had fallen, Zed decided to visit him personally. The moment he saw Ian looking so lost and devastated, strong contempt and fury instantly arose in him. He strode forward and violently grabbed Ian by the collar. His accusatory tone was icy and unforgiving. "So, no

Ian mobilized all the manpower available in the Whitestone pack. He sent group after group of wolves to search for me.But no matter how hard he searched, he couldn't find even the slightest trace of me. It was as though I had vanished into thin air and was completely erased from his world."Keep searching! Continue searching for her!" he ordered his Beta, his voice so hoarse that it was nearly inaudible. "Use every connection we have. You must find her for me!"After hanging up, Ian leaned weakly against the cold wall, as though all the strength had been drained from his body. Clenching his fists, he slammed them hard against the wall. His eyes were bloodshot and filled with pain and despair."Why won't you even give me a chance to make things right, Nadine?" he mumbled helplessly. He went day and night without rest, growing increasingly haggard. The commanding dignity he once carried as an Alpha had completely disappeared.Sherry, on the other hand, still refused to give up. Ag

After leaving the banquet hall, Ian never slowed his steps for even a moment. All he wanted was to find me as quickly as possible. As he ran, memories of the past replayed uncontrollably in his mind, and overwhelming regret instantly swallowed him whole. He remembered how he had possessed neither resources nor status back then, but I had still chosen to be with him. I had only cared about his sincerity and had remained faithfully by his side the entire time.Originally, he had already made up his mind to publicly announce my identity as his Luna at the gathering. He wanted to let everyone know my rightful identity so that I wouldn't have to put up with gossip and criticism from others anymore. But the moment he saw Sherry, his resolution wavered completely. The ridiculous obsession from his youth clouded his judgment, causing him to throw all the promises he had made to me out the window. He remembered how the banquet hall had been filled with wolves surrounding me. He recalled how

Upon hearing Ian's words, Sherry's face instantly turned deathly pale. She looked as though she had been viciously slapped across the face. Even her lips trembled.Jealousy and fury surged through her all at once, nearly overwhelming her reason. But then, she recalled that Ian had already drunk the bond-dissolution potion. Sooner or later, his mate bond with me would fall apart completely. At that point, he would naturally think of her and willingly choose to be with her.Forcibly suppressing the anger in her heart, she gradually calmed herself down. When she spoke again, her tone became deliberately gentle. It carried a hint of fake tolerance that she thought was convincing. She said, "Ian, I don't blame you. You didn't tell me the truth because you were afraid I'd feel hurt. It's okay. I can wait. As soon as you completely dissolve your bond with Nadine, I'll be with you."As she said that, she stepped forward and held Ian's arm. This time, Ian didn't hesitate in the slighte

The banquet went on. Music and laughter blended together, making the atmosphere lively and joyous. Everyone was immersed in the excitement of the gathering. No one noticed that Ian's expression looked increasingly strained. His chest tightened in waves, as though something was being forcibly ripped out of his body. Subconsciously, he lowered his head and glanced at his hand. The mate mark on his ring finger was visibly fading before his eyes.A terror he had never experienced before surged violently from deep within him. Only then did he suddenly think of me. My utterly disappointed gaze flashed rapidly through his mind.Ian rose onto his toes, anxiously trying to find my figure among the noisy crowd. Sherry immediately noticed something was wrong with him. She knew the bond-dissolution potion had taken effect. She took a quick step forward and wrapped herself around his arm, putting on a worried expression as she spoke softly. "What's wrong? Are you not feeling well?"Ian said
