Chapter 4

Author: Snail
The moment Sherry saw Ian come out, panic flashed across her face. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed me hiding behind the nearby corner. In a split second, she regained her composure.

She turned to look at Ian and pretended nothing was wrong. "No one. You must have been hearing things. It felt stuffy inside, so I came out for some air."

Ian stepped forward slightly. His brows furrowed as the tip of his nose twitched gently. He caught the lingering trace of my scent in the air.

Then, he started walking toward the corner where I was hiding with suspicion flickering in his eyes.

The moment Sherry saw him heading my way, her heart skipped a beat. She stepped forward hastily and grabbed his arm. Her eyes instantly reddened as she put on a wounded expression.

"Ian, I still regret it to this day. I regret not handing you the scarf myself back then. Otherwise, we wouldn't have missed each other for so many years."

Her voice was soft, and she sounded aggrieved, which successfully diverted Ian's attention.

Ian stopped walking. Seeing her reddened eyes, he spoke in an unbelievably gentle tone and raised a hand to lightly pat her back in comfort.

"Don't be upset anymore. The past is in the past. We should just look ahead," he consoled.

Sherry nodded, looking comforted.

She wrapped herself tightly around Ian's arm and said with a smile, "Okay, I'll listen to you. Everyone's still waiting for us inside. Let's head back."

Ian no longer thought about looking for me. He let her lead him back toward the banquet hall.

Sherry turned her head and glanced toward the corner where I was hiding. The corners of her lips lifted into a smug and arrogant smile. She had a confident and victorious look on her face.

The moment the two of them reentered the banquet hall, the wolves immediately burst into cheers.

"Alpha Ian and Ms. Lark look perfect together. You should dance!"

The instant those words fell, music began playing. Sherry took the initiative to extend her hand. Ian didn't refuse, and the two of them walked together onto the dance floor.

Sherry pressed her body right onto Ian's, resting one hand on his shoulder and holding his hand with the other. Their dance movements were slow and intimate.

Ian wrapped one arm around her waist and looked down at her. There wasn't the slightest trace of impatience on his face. On the contrary, he seemed to thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere and never once thought about me throughout the entire dance.

When the song ended, another round of cheering erupted through the hall.

Sherry released him and walked over to a server to retrieve a glass of blood wine. With her back to the crowd and avoiding Ian's gaze, she quickly poured the entire bottle of bond-dissolution potion into the wine glass.

She swirled it gently, thoroughly blending the potion with the wine.

After she was done, she walked back over to Ian with the glass and handed it to him with a smile.

"To celebrate our chance to start over again!" she said.

Ian didn't suspect anything at all, nor did he decline the drink she offered him. He accepted the glass and drained it in one gulp.

Almost at the exact same second, the mate mark on my ring finger suddenly burned with a sharp pain. The mind-link we had shared for three years instantly snapped apart, leaving my chest empty and aching.

Meanwhile, Ian merely felt a slight tightness in his chest and an inexplicable sense of irritability. His heart had swayed toward Sherry long ago, so his sensitivity to our mate bond had gradually weakened. He simply assumed it was the alcohol acting up and didn't think any further.

Seeing the empty wineglass, Sherry finally relaxed after holding her breath the entire time. As she looked at Ian, the loving look in her eyes practically spilled forth.

I hid in the dark corner nearby, watching every single thing unfold with perfect clarity. The moment I saw Ian drink that glass of wine, the very last trace of hope I had left for him vanished without a trace.

I had stayed by his side, caring for him for three years. I had accompanied him through his hardest days. But in his heart, I could never compare to Sherry.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Not sparing the banquet another glance, I turned away with my luggage and left.

Since he cared about Sherry so much, I'd fulfill his wish to be with her.

After I settled peacefully into the secluded mountain village, Zed still didn't fully relax. He frequently busied himself helping me adjust to my new life. Often, he came by to help me with daily chores and shielded me from all outside news. He went to great lengths to ensure none of the troubles from the Whitestone pack bothered me.As time passed and we spent more days together, he watched me gradually blend into the serene life in the village.I treated everyone with warmth and politeness. I was kind and helpful to the neighbors and never argued with anyone. Even when villagers occasionally gossiped about me behind my back, I merely smiled calmly and never took it to heart.Upon seeing all this, every prejudice Zed once held toward me disappeared completely. At last, he truly realized that I had never been some lowly she-wolf clinging desperately to others. On the contrary, I was gentle and kind, with an unyielding strength deep within me.Without even realizing it, he found h

Day after day of fruitless searching eventually broke him.Ian went on with life aimlessly, like he was a soulless husk. Upon learning how far Ian had fallen, Zed decided to visit him personally. The moment he saw Ian looking so lost and devastated, strong contempt and fury instantly arose in him. Ian mobilized all the manpower available in the Whitestone pack. He sent group after group of wolves to search for me.But no matter how hard he searched, he couldn't find even the slightest trace of me. It was as though I had vanished into thin air and was completely erased from his world."Keep searching! Continue searching for her!" he ordered his Beta, his voice so hoarse that it was nearly inaudible. "Use every connection we have. You must find her for me!"After hanging up, Ian leaned weakly against the cold wall, as though all the strength had been drained from his body. Clenching his fists, he slammed them hard against the wall. His eyes were bloodshot and filled with pain and despair."Why won't you even give me a chance to make things right, Nadine?" he mumbled helplessly. He went day and night without rest, growing increasingly haggard. The commanding dignity he once carried as an Alpha had completely disappeared.Sherry, on the other hand, still refused to give up. Ag

After leaving the banquet hall, Ian never slowed his steps for even a moment. All he wanted was to find me as quickly as possible. As he ran, memories of the past replayed uncontrollably in his mind, and overwhelming regret instantly swallowed him whole. He remembered how he had possessed neither resources nor status back then, but I had still chosen to be with him. I had only cared about his sincerity and had remained faithfully by his side the entire time.Originally, he had already made up his mind to publicly announce my identity as his Luna at the gathering. He wanted to let everyone know my rightful identity so that I wouldn't have to put up with gossip and criticism from others anymore. But the moment he saw Sherry, his resolution wavered completely. The ridiculous obsession from his youth clouded his judgment, causing him to throw all the promises he had made to me out the window. He remembered how the banquet hall had been filled with wolves surrounding me. He recalled how

Upon hearing Ian's words, Sherry's face instantly turned deathly pale. She looked as though she had been viciously slapped across the face. Even her lips trembled.Jealousy and fury surged through her all at once, nearly overwhelming her reason. But then, she recalled that Ian had already drunk the bond-dissolution potion. Sooner or later, his mate bond with me would fall apart completely. At that point, he would naturally think of her and willingly choose to be with her.Forcibly suppressing the anger in her heart, she gradually calmed herself down. When she spoke again, her tone became deliberately gentle. It carried a hint of fake tolerance that she thought was convincing. She said, "Ian, I don't blame you. You didn't tell me the truth because you were afraid I'd feel hurt. It's okay. I can wait. As soon as you completely dissolve your bond with Nadine, I'll be with you."As she said that, she stepped forward and held Ian's arm. This time, Ian didn't hesitate in the slighte

My utterly disappointed gaze flashed rapidly through his mind.Ian rose onto his toes, anxiously trying to find my figure among the noisy crowd.
