Chapter 10: The Tie That Ruined Everything (in the Best Way)

last update Last Updated: 2025-06-21 04:35:06

By the time Katherine arrived at the Mason Equity Group that morning, something was already... off.

She could feel it in the air.

Not in the bad way, like when the coffee machine breaks or Jenkins wears sandals again.

No, this was different.

The office buzzed — but it wasn’t the usual pre-meeting panic.

It was quieter. Charged.

Like the universe was holding its breath.

And Katherine Brown — queen of organized chaos — strutted in like she owned the damn cosmos.

She wore a blazer the color of wild cherries and lipstick to match.

Her heels clicked like promises.

Her earrings said: don’t test me today, I’ve got graphs.

She waved a coffee cup at Cara.

“Today is the day.”

Cara blinked. “The day for what?”

“Victory. Or flames. Either way, we go down fabulous.”

Behind her, someone muttered: “Dear God.”

The boardroom was already prepped.

Rows of chairs, polished table, intimidating screen.

The kind of room where empires were made or burned to ash.

And at the head of the table: ten chairs that would soon be filled with shareholders, directors, and one woman with a face like she bit lemons for breakfast — Chairwoman Talbot.

Katherine looked at the room and grinned.

“This’ll be fun.”

Jenkins dropped his tablet.

At precisely 9:58 AM, Sebastian Mason entered the boardroom.

The room stilled. The air restructured itself.

He moved with that deliberate, quiet intensity that made people think twice before breathing too loud.

But Katherine?

She didn’t freeze because of his presence.

She froze because of his tie.

It wasn’t black.

It wasn’t gray.

It was navy.

Dark. Silky. Just enough shine to make a statement.

A subtle, deliberate departure from his grayscale armor.

Her brain short-circuited for half a second.

And then he smiled at her.

Not a big smile. Not even a full one.

But enough.

Like he was in on a joke she hadn’t told yet.

“Good morning, Miss Brown,” he said, taking the seat beside her.

“You’re wearing color,” she whispered, scandalized.

He nodded solemnly. “Bold choices for bold presentations.”

“I feel violated. And also... proud.”

Ten minutes in, and the room was already on edge.

Katherine stood at the front, slide clicker in hand, a mischievous gleam in her eyes.

The PowerPoint opened with a soft chime and a title that read:

“Let’s Make Money Look Sexy.”

Chairwoman Talbot blinked.

One of the investors actually coughed into his water.

Katherine grinned.

“Welcome, everyone. What you’re about to see today may change how you think about financial growth, brand positioning, and the deep, spiritual power of a well-timed GIF.”

She clicked.

Slide 1: A Venn diagram with three circles — “Profit,” “Passion,” “Pizzazz.”

The overlap was labeled: “Magic.”

Talbot made a noise like a dying printer.

Sebastian sat, arms crossed, watching with that unreadable expression of his.

Except now… it was different.

He wasn’t correcting her.

Wasn’t sighing. Wasn’t subtly tapping notes into his tablet.

He was just… watching.

And then — leaning forward.

Interested.

Amused?

Impressed?

Slide 5 featured a chart with dancing dollar signs.

Slide 7 was animated. It involved a cat meme.

Slide 9 said, in large bold font: “We’re not here to blend in. We’re here to stand out, cash in, and sparkle doing it.”

“Miss Brown,” interrupted one of the directors finally, “Are you suggesting we use humor and... emotion in our investor-facing campaign?”

“I’m suggesting we stop being a Wall Street ghost and start being a brand that breathes,” Katherine replied.

Her tone? Firm. Sharp. Full of purpose.

“But yes. Also humor.”

There was a stunned silence.

And then a second voice:

“What does Mr. Mason think?”

All heads turned.

Katherine held her breath.

This was the moment he’d rein her in. Bring out the realism. Do damage control.

But he didn’t.

Sebastian slowly stood.

He smoothed his jacket.

And then — with terrifying calm — said:

“I think she’s right.”

A chair creaked.

Talbot stared.

Someone whispered “what.”

Sebastian’s voice was even. Measured. Controlled.

“But more importantly,” he continued, “I think Miss Brown’s vision may finally do what our last three campaigns failed to — engage.”

Katherine’s eyebrows nearly launched off her face.

He sat back down, folded his hands, and said nothing more.

The rest of the presentation blurred past like a surreal dream.

Questions came. She answered. Some with stats, some with sass.

The room buzzed with conflict, confusion — and undeniable curiosity.

When she finished, the applause was hesitant.

But it was there.

Outside the boardroom, as the door clicked shut behind them, Katherine turned to Sebastian with wide eyes.

“You—what—did you hit your head this morning?”

He smirked. “No. But I did consider the value of strategic risk.”

“You didn’t criticize me once.”

“I didn’t need to.”

“You wore navy.”

“It’s still technically neutral.”

She blinked. “You backed me up.”

“You were right.”

“But... why?”

He didn’t answer right away.

And then, after a long pause, he looked at her — really looked.

And said quietly, “Because something’s changed.”

She didn’t speak.

Didn’t know what to say.

So she laughed.

Awkward. Light. A shield, like always.

“Well, don’t get used to it. Next time, I might pitch glitter-infused investor reports.”

“I’d approve the prototype,” he said.

And then he walked away.

She stood there a moment longer.

And for the first time in a long time...

She didn’t know if she was running the show anymore.

Because if Sebastian Mason was starting to believe in her…

Then maybe she had to start believing in herself too.

The light streaming through the tall windows of the penthouse felt almost offensive.Katherine Brown blinked at the ceiling. It took her a second to remember where she was. Then it hit her.Sebastian’s bed.Sebastian’s city.Sebastian’s absence. She sat up sharply, the silk sheet slipping down her shoulders. The other side of the bed was perfectly made — untouched. Her heart thudded with something between confusion and fury.“Seriously?” she muttered, shoving her legs off the mattress and grabbing her phone. One missed call from Chloe. Two texts from her sister. Nothing from him.She hit the dial.Ring. Ring. Ring.“Mason.”His voice was clipped. Professional. Background noise buzzed — typing, murmurs, a printer. Her eyes narrowed.“Are you in the office?”“Yes.”A pause.“I didn’t want to wake you.”“How considerate,” she said, her tone sweet as venom.“Just curious — is that your new way of making amends? Leaving a woman in your bed while you go play Empire?”No answer.“Don’t worry

  • Miss Brown, Keep It Down   Chapter 55: The Edge of Almost

The apartment was silent — the kind of silence that didn’t calm you but clawed at your insides. New York pulsed outside the glass like a distant heartbeat, but inside the penthouse, everything felt... hollow. Sebastian sat up in bed, the sheets tangled at his waist. On the far side of the mattress, Katherine lay curled up — asleep, or pretending to be. She hadn't said a word since they got home. Hadn’t reached for him. Hadn’t even looked at him. And he… hadn’t known how to bridge the space between them. He stood, grabbing a T-shirt from the chair, and padded barefoot through the cool wood floors into the living room. No lights. Just the pale silver cast of the city stretching out for miles below him. It looked so alive. And he felt like a ghost in his own life. He dropped onto the sofa. Elbows on knees. Palms to face. Then he saw it — the bracelet. Gold. Minimal. The one he'd chosen for her that evening. She’d taken it off when she came in and left it on the edge of the

The sun filtered softly through the gauzy curtains of Katherine’s apartment, painting the walls with streaks of gold. The city below was already alive — faint traffic, distant sirens, and the occasional bark from a neighbor’s balcony dog. But up here, up in the apartment, it felt like they were suspended above it all. Sebastian stood barefoot by the window, still shirtless, his trousers loosely hanging from his hips. The phone in his hand cast a faint glow across his stern features as he scrolled through the headlines. “‘New York’s Golden Couple to Attend Charity Gala This Saturday’,” he read aloud with the dry tone of someone unimpressed by the poetry of the press. “Apparently, we’re ‘radiant and mysterious.’” From the kitchen, Katherine let out a sleepy laugh. “That’s just a fancy way of saying we didn’t stop to pose for the paparazzi.” She was wearing one of his crisp white shirts, the sleeves rolled up, the hem barely covering her thighs. Her hair was a messy bun of curl

The bed felt too big. Katherine turned for the third time, pulling the blanket tighter, but nothing helped. Not the glass of wine, not the half-watched documentary still playing in the background, not even the podcast that had ended an hour ago. Sleep was nowhere to be found. But the ghost of his touch? Everywhere. She was just about to give up and check emails —because, apparently, insomnia meant productivity now — when her phone lit up on the nightstand. Sebastian Mason Incoming FaceTime call Her breath caught. It was 2:04 a.m. “What the hell…” she whispered, then hit Accept before she could talk herself out of it. “Hi.” His voice was low, warm, and… so damn real. He looked tired. Fresh out of the shower, hair still damp, white T-shirt slightly wrinkled, eyes heavy but steady on her. “Did I wake you?” She scoffed, adjusting the robe around her shoulders. “Do I look like someone who was asleep?” He gave a small smirk. “No. You look like someone who forgot her

By 11:45 a.m., Las Vegas was already shimmering with dry, relentless heat — the kind that clung to your skin and made every breath feel slightly heavier.Sebastian stepped out of the black town car and into the glossy, tinted-glass lobby of the Mason Equity Group — Nevada Division, briefcase in one hand, suit crisp, expression unreadable. The receptionist — a young man with a slightly panicked smile — jumped to his feet.“Mr. Mason! We weren’t expecting — I mean, of course, we’re honored. Ms. Vega is upstairs. I’ll just —”“Let her know I’m on my way up,” Sebastian said calmly, already crossing to the elevators. The doors closed behind him with a soft hiss. His reflection stared back from the mirrored walls — calm, composed… but his mind was already working. Numbers. Inconsistencies. Too many delays. Too much silence.Something wasn’t adding up in Vegas.---On the 14th floor, the moment the elevator dinged, he stepped into a wave of tension.Phones rang. People whispered. Someone nea

The second Katherine stepped into the building, she knew something was off.It wasn’t the too-cold blast of AC in the lobby. Or the cheery “Good morning, Miss Brown!” from the intern she didn’t remember hiring.No. It was the way everyone turned to look.Like a wave.Like she was the opening act.Or the scandal. Her heels clicked across the polished floor as she made her way toward the elevator, each step echoing louder than it should have. A security guard nodded. Two assistants whispered. Someone tried to pretend they were looking at their phone — but Katherine could feel their gaze. She adjusted the strap of her powder-blue bag and kept walking. Chin up. Smile ready.
