“Welcome, everyone to the grand anniversary ball of the Hank family.” Melissa’s voice echoed confidently from the platform. “On behalf of my soon-to-be-husband, my mother-in-law, and the entire Hank family, I express our gratitude for acknowledging our invitation.” Claps and cheers reverberated in the large hall as everyone gazed admirably at her. “We also want to use this means to announce that our biggest project and deal is taking place soon and we can't help but add this to our celebration. Tonight, we also celebrate the Hank Corporation partnership announcement with the Grays. Cheers everyone.” The audience applauded again and Melissa raised her glass of drink in a toast followed by the guests and at the count of three, they all took a sip. “Melissa Johan?” One of the guests whispered to another. “Yes. I heard that she got engaged to Mr Hank a few months back. You don't know that? Everyone does.” “I’ve been out of the loop lately. She must be so happy. Despite being a mean girl, she managed to pull Mr Hank,” the murmur continued. “Plus she doesn’t even walk normally.” “True. Even arrogant and spoiled girls get love these days. Mr Hank must truly love her a lot to let her speak on behalf of his family.” Melissa’s smile broadened at the attention of the guests. What more could she ask for? Holding the microphone to herself, she continued. “My fiance and Mr Gray are not here yet but don't panic. They are definitely going to be here. Before that, why don't we play some music and dance? It's a day of celebration.” With that, the hall erupted in a happy flow of music. “Have you called him, Melissa?” Melissa heard a whisper from behind her. She turned her eyes on her soon-to-be mother-in-law. “He’s not answering his calls, mother,” she grumbled, fishing her phone out of her pockets. “Where has this son of mine gone? We can't upset the guests with his absence today.” “Not to worry. I’ll go that way and give him a call again,” she volunteered. She stepped down and limped towards a quiet corner in the hall. She ignored the judging eyes of the guests as she confidently limped in the direction. Her lips twitched. She knew that they knew the cause of her damaged legs and for that, she got all their love and support, not caring if some only pitied her. As she dialed Noah’s number, the intensified murmuring of the guests caught her attention and she cocked her head to the side, to find out what exactly captivated them. She frowned as she watched them stare at the entrance of the hall in shock. Following their gaze, her frown deepened at the sight. “What the hell?” Melissa gasped, slipped her phone back into her purse, and began stepping toward the newcomers who’d stolen the spotlights from her with their appearances. “Oh my. Who is this with a red dress? Did you perhaps come to the wrong place? And even a mask?” She gritted her teeth as she stepped before the woman in the stunning red dress who had her upper face hidden behind a mask. “You’re clearly not on the invite list.” “Excuse me?” The newcomer spoke for the first time. Her voice only made Melissa roll her eyes, pushing back the familiarity. “Yeah excuse you. Ignoring the instructions of the host is rude. The invite clearly specified black and white attire. What is this?” “I don’t think that should be a problem.” The woman stepped forward with a serene smile. “I’m Brent Gray. Nice to meet you.” Melissa’s face drained of color, her eyes widening in utter shock, almost popping out of their sockets. “What? G…Gray as in..” “I’m the daughter of Mr Gray of Gray corporation. I’m representing my father here. He’s not in good health. What I did not know is that this is how you welcome your guests. I’m hig….” “No no. That’s not it,” Melissa quickly interrupted, forcing a smile to mask how shaken she was. “Haha. I…I thought you were just another lost guest.” “Oh really?” “Of course. Oh my. It's really you. Thank you so much for attending our family’s ball to celebrate the company’s anniversary. You can call me Melissa.” She stretched her hand forward for a handshake. “I am Mr. Hank’s Fiance. Nice meeting you.” But her outstretched palm was only ignored and overlooked. She faked a laugh, dropped her hand in embarrassment, and rubbed them on her black dress, her palm suddenly sweaty. Was she supposed to be feeling the way she felt? She pondered inwardly. Yes, the woman before her was intimidating but no, she didn't feel so intimidated so easily. “Nice meeting you, Melissa.” Her thoughts were cut off by the woman. “Oh, the pleasure is mine. Please come on in. I decorated this hall myself and I do hope that you like it. My husband… I mean my fiancee had asked me to take care of you specially. You're our biggest guest.” “Indeed.” “Right.” “I haven't seen the host of the party anywhere. He doesn't attend business parties?” Brent Gray pondered out loud. “My husband? I mean my soon-to-be.” She waved it off with a laugh. “You understand. I'm just not used to either of the titles yet. He'll be here soon. He normally doesn't attend parties but he definitely will come. You know, we never expected that you would come in place of your father.” “Father is sick. He sent me here.” “He’s so nice for that.” “By the way, congratulations on your engagement. Nice ring.” “My fiance is so sweet. This thirty-carat ring must have cost a fortune. You know, right?” she flashed the ring before everyone. But got ignored by Brent Gray who only shook her head and continued. “I should see the others. We’ll meet again.” But before Brent Gray could leave, Melissa watched as she took off the mask from her face and with her hands, brushed her hair backward. She could swear that the sight she was met with was one that almost made her drop to the floor in utter shock. There was no mistaking who it was and for a while, she felt her soul leave her body. “Wh…Wh..what the hell?” She roared. “Stop!” **** A/N Welcome to my new book, dearest gentle readers. Love, SuxiEPILOGUE FIVE MONTHS AFTERNo one had informed Genevieve that being surrounded by loved ones on a special awaited day would be so satisfying. They say that it takes a village to raise a child and if there was one thing that she was sure about was that her baby sure had a city. There were tons of people who loved her to death. Noah, her papa, her mother-in-law, Ella, her new friends, and a whole lot of people. She wouldn’t trade their love for anything else in the world. Staring at herself in the mirror, Eve let out a sigh, an emotional yet relieving sigh. How did her life become this great? With the baby in her, it was all rainbows and smiles. “Darling, you ready?”She looked behind her at the voice of her husband who’d just walked into the room. She rose from the chair and at the sight of her dress and makeup, Noah’s lips curled into a charming smile. He strode toward her and pulled her into his embrace. “What? You look stunning, baby.”“Thank you. Is everyone ready? Should we g
“If you’d brought her in any later than you did, we would be telling another story by now.” All six eyes peered keenly at the doctor as he began, their expressions filled with concern and worry. On both sides of Eve in the hospital room were Noah and Ella and they both shared the same look of worry on their faces. The middle-aged doctor continued. “For now, Mrs Hank and the baby are fine but you must watch and avoid situations that might put the baby in danger. Congratulations on your pregnancy once again.”Eve let out a loud sigh of relief once the doctor was done with his words, a smile spreading on her lips afterward as she glanced at Noah. They shared a smile, his hands caressing her hair gently.“We're going to have a baby, hubby.”“Fuck we are. I guess my hard work paid off then.” He leaned in and pecked her forehead before rising from the chair. “I'll go with the doctor and sort things out, okay? You'll be fine, right?”“En.”His eyes darted downward to her flat stomach and he
“Me…me…Melissa?” Tiala faked a gasp of surprise and stepped backward away from both girls. “I don't know what you're saying. I don't know who Melissa is.” She might get killed after this by Melissa but she still had a little faith that Melissa would put things into place and come to save her. Her boss, she knew, was the expert at scheming and drawing out plans. She prayed to the heavens that Melissa would be able to save her now.“You think Melissa will save you by hiding who she is? I told you we have a train of police officers outside and nothing you do will be able to stop them from taking you away.”“They can't take me away. I did nothing.”“Then lure Melissa here. Lure her here and you might receive lighter punishment from the court.”The girl’s body was trembling all over. Her legs were threatening to give away underneath her and she was holding herself so badly from peeing her pants from the fear that enveloped her. She never planned to return to prison after everything that s
FLASHBACKJust an hour after Eve got out of the Gray corporation, Tiala paced around the office, her perfectly manicured nails in between her teeth as she tried to think of Eve’s words. On one hand, she was happy that Eve would make her mission easier for her but on the other hand, she couldn’t bring herself to trust the girl fully and agree to the truce. But she had to. Mainly because she had barely two weeks to finalize everything and leave. A gasp escaped her lips when the door of her office flung open abruptly and closed with a bag, a slightly shorter slim woman stepping in. Tiala gasped when she realized who it was.“Wh…why are you doing here, Melissa?” She gasped. With annoyance, Melissa tore her scarf and glasses off her and threw them to one of the couches. Afterward, she walked closer until she stood before Tiala. “Why the fuck you didn’t ask that lowlife secretary of yours to let me in whenever I get here?”“I…I’m sorry, boss.” Her head lowered and she found her fingers cu
Eve’s anger burned over. The room suddenly became twice as cold as usual from the glare that the two parties passed each other. She slammed her hand on the table and rose, her eyes glaring daggers at the girl. “No, you didn’t get deceived. You deceived us and we’re here to have you pay for it.”“Wait.” Genevieve chuckled but there was no hint of amusement on her face. She had a panicked expression as she shook her head from side to side. “You mean that everything was a lie? That you’re not on the same page as me? Yesterday you told me.”“Yeah yeah, I deceived you. But that was little compared to the lie that you told. Unfortunately for you, you’ve been busted. Right there is the proof that you fixed your face to look like my father’s and of course, you have someone behind you, directing you and ordering you around like a fucking puppet.”“I’m not a puppet,” the girl screamed. “I told you I’m not a puppet and you’re lying. I’d never fix my face…”Ella cut her off. “I think it’s high ti
A day later, Ella and Eve parked their car in the same spot that they did the previous day. They both had a veil and thick sunglasses on their eyes and their gazes were fixated on the entrance of the company. “How did you get in yesterday?” Ella couldn’t help but ask about the tight security of the company. “By using the pass father gave me.”“They’re not going to question our attire?”“They won’t. They wouldn’t dare question people sent by their boss. Come on, let’s leave. Is everything ready?”“Never been more ready. Although, yesterday, I almost lost the envelope.”Eve’s eyes widened and her head whipped to Ella. “What? Where is it now?”“Relax,” Ella laughed. “I found it at the bottom of Liam’s passenger’s seat after finding it for minutes. It’s a miracle.” If Liam hadn’t sighted the envelope under her chair and picked it up for her, she wondered what she’d have done considering that the success of the operation lies in it. Eve would’ve nagged her to death. Eve let out a breath
