CHAPTER 1: Forget the lights, sweetheart
The car pulled to a stop, and the driver turned to Sarah. “We are already here, ma'am.” Sarah nodded with a faint smile. “I have to go, Cara. I have already arrived at his place. I'll talk to you later.” “This is madness,Sarah,” she pressed further. “It would have been better to take up my offer of coming to Italy after college graduation. I have a bad feeling about this.” Cara was the only person who had ever treated Sarah with love and kindness. Cara was part Italian. They had met and become great friends in college. “Don't worry,Cara. I'll be careful. I have to go. I'll call you later. Bye.” Sarah swiftly ended the call before Cara could protest further. She was aware of the look of displeasure on the driver's face from the front mirror. She offered him a small apologetic smile and slid out of the car. No sooner had she alighted, did the car zoom off, and her attention was immediately drawn to the palatial edifice before her. Sarah swallowed the nervous lump in her throat and smoothed her dress with her clammy hand. With her purse clutched tightly in her hand and determination in her stride, she approached the door. Sarah was ushered into the house and taken into a tastefully furnished and designed bedroom. “When do I get to see the owner of the house?” Sarah asked the servant who was about to leave the room. “Master gave instructions to bring you here once you arrive, Miss” Sarah nodded. “And when will he be back?” She needed to impress him— whoever he was. Her family's salvation depended on it. If he wanted a bride, then that is what she would be. “Master will be back soon, Miss Make yourself comfortable. Dinner will be sent up to you soon.” Sarah was confused about the entire arrangement, but she dared not voice her opinion. Her family's benefactor had sent a car earlier that evening to bring Veronica to him, but alas, it was her that had come instead; but she was yet to meet him. The servant left, and she was left alone in the huge bedroom. The assortment of different mouth watering delicacies was later brought up, and Sarah ate as much as she could with her stomach in knots. Sarah decided to take a shower and change into the delectable and expensive looking lingerie that was led out on the bed for her. She was fast asleep but awoke to someone hovering above her. Sleep quickly vanished from her eyes, and she quickly made to turn on the light switch above the bed, but warm and firm large hands swiftly caught hold of her wrists, pinning it down to the pillow on both sides of her head. Sarah knew this must be the man she was here to meet. “Forget the lights, sweetheart. I just want to feel you,” he drawled in a rich baritone. His speech sounded a bit slurred. His expensive manly cologne— a marriage of musk, leather, and sandalwood - enveloped her. She felt him inhaling her scent, sniffing, and trailing kisses on her skin along her nape and down to the base of her throat. She froze in his arms. Sarah found a surge of panic when she felt his other hand exploring and pressing her body. She had never had a boyfriend or been this close to a man before. “You smell and feel more beautiful than I even imagined, darling,” he husked in her ears, making a strange warmth spread all over her. Sarah's mind raced. Did he know her before? Of course not. He had requested the daughter of the Maxwell family. Of course, he was referring to Veronica. He thought she was Veronica. She felt him loosen the knots of her silk robe and slide down the straps of her nightgown. She was a virgin, but she was not dumb. She knew where this was heading. She would have preferred to get to know this faceless stranger, first– or at least sign the marriage certificate before going this far. Sarah had not even seen his face because of the darkness in the room, but his firm and toned body was taut with muscles, pressing her into the soft silken sheets. She guessed he was probably a young and fit man. “Seems like we're going to have the wedding night before the wedding, sweetheart,” he drawled huskily in her ears. Her eyes grew wide as saucers in the dark room, and before she could utter a word, his warm, soft lips claimed hers in a hungry kiss. Her words were swallowed, and his skilful ministrations left her a moaning and writhing mess beneath him. Maxwell Residence (Same Day) “Sarah, that bitch! Mom you would not believe what I just found out right now,” Veronica screeched in alarm as she stomped into the living room. Estelle dropped the glass of wine she was sipping from, and dismissed the servant who was painting her toenails. “Get out. Go and tidy up my room, now,” she hissed. The maid scurried away with head bowed low, cowering from the look of disgust and disdain that Veronica threw at her. “Now tell me sweetheart, what has your pretty head all worked up so early in the morning?”Estelle asked her daughter. “I just found out the identity of the new investor.” Estelle's curiosity was piqued. The investment and proposal had come shrouded in secrecy. Although they were curious about their benefactor, they were only too glad to give Sarah in exchange for their salvation. “Who is it?” “It's Edward, mom. Edward Huxley,” Veronica screamed in rage. She refused to accept the marriage because she was in a steamy romance with her model boyfriend—Dylan, plus she secretly suspected it might be a rich wrinkled old man or a creepy freak or psychopath. Estelle's eyes widened in shock. “Are you sure, sweetheart? How did you find out about this?” “Dylan's cousin works as one of his drivers. He was the one that picked her up last night. Maybe he recognised her, and he told Dylan about it.” Edward Huxley was the owner of the largest Airline and Shipping Company in the country. He was the richest and most good-looking bachelor in the country. Veronica was fuming in anger by the thought of Sarah being with him right now, and even getting married to him. Estelle's shock slowly gave way to a devious smirk. “This is actually great news, sweetheart,” she beamed. Things just kept getting better and better. Veronica's brows knotted in confusion. “What are you getting at, mom? Sarah is going to marry him now,”she snapped and paced the room frantically. “I rejected the proposal, remember?” Estelle was not bothered. She had always hated Sarah for being the child of her husband's mistress, and treated her with disdain. Veronica deserved the best of everything, not Sarah. “That does not matter,”You are going to be the one to marry him, not Sarah.” Veronica had changed her mind. She wanted Edward. He was wealthier and more good-looking than Dylan. She would never allow Sarah to win over her. “What do you have in mind, mom? Cause I would never allow that skank to get ahead of me,” she spat with hatred for Sarah. Estelle smirked. “Don't worry, dear. I have a plan. You just have to follow my lead and play along. Edward is going to be yours,”she assured. Veronica smiled with relief at her mother's assurance. Mother knows best. “Does Dylan's cousin know how we can see Mr Huxley?” Estelle asked with a devious smirk.CHAPTER 110: You look like meSarah’s head snapped toward Edward in disbelief. The silence in the living room was deafening, heavy with questions too big for little hearts, and answers too complex for ones so young. She was more surprised that he had taken the blame for her.She stood with her hands clasped tightly in front of her, knuckles white from the force of restraint. Her gaze shifted from Robyn’s sparkling eyes to Liam’s furrowed brows. Edward stood just a few steps away, arms loose at his sides, his posture deceptively relaxed, though his heart thudded like a drum. The weight of the truth hung between them…visible, palpable, almost suffocating. He did not know why he had instinctively taken the blame for her when he saw her struggling to answer the children. It was Robyn who broke the silence, her tiny voice tinged with awe and disbelief. She was still waiting for either of the adults to further explain and confirm what they heard. She really wished that what she heard was th
CHAPTER 109: You’re our daddy?Edward was transfixed. His eyes trailed from her plump inviting lips down to the pulse at the base of her throat. He tightly restrained himself from leaning in and enclosing his mouth against the pulsing soft warm skin. Sarah saw the tightness of his features and the deep endless glittering black pools that had become his eyes, and she took a visible intake of breath, and Edward heard it too.She cleared her throat, and carefully sidestepped, avoiding him like molten lava that was going to burn her. Once she was at a safe distance from him, she cleared her throat, and Edward turned around to face her again.“Like I said… I don't blame you. But it's Veronica we are talking about. And now? She knows. She hates me and she despises the idea that you fathered my children. She’s vindictive. Especially now that you've broken up with her. You should know that better than anyone.”Her voice cracked slightly, and the inferno in Edward’s eyes softened—but only for
CHAPTER 108: Nothing to do with meSarah was finishing some work on her laptop, seated on the couch when the doorbell rang. She had barely risen from her place on the couch, before the familiar silhouette of Edward filled the doorway, tension lining his shoulders.“My apologies if I just barged in. I thought I’d find just the kids. They're always opening the door each time I call. Are they home?” he asked, stepping inside.Sarah’s back straightened. “Yes. They’re napping,” she said coolly, walking back to the couch. “You can wait for them if you're not in a hurry?”He followed her without hesitation. “Of course. I just wanted to check on them.”She went back to finish the work on her laptop. “That's good. I’m sure they’ll be happy to see you. You guys hit it off quite fast so I'm sure they will be glad.”Edward sat down on the couch opposite, his eyes never leaving her face, searching for any sign of warmth. But she had gone back to typing away on her laptop.“Did you expect anything
CHAPTER 107: Returning the favorVeronica swayed slightly. She gripped the edge of the chaise lounge like it was the only thing tethering her to the earth.“No—no, that’s not possible. Edward invested in the company. Have you forgotten, mom? That's where all of this started. We should not be talking about bankruptcy. We still have the penthouse, the club in Milan, the resort—”“Gone,” Estelle said with an edge of bitter steel. “All of it. Seized or liquidated.”Veronica gaped at her mother. “How? When?” She threw her hands out in frustration, with anger underlying her voice.“Well, the bills don't pay themselves, sweetheart. The expensive lifestyle. The designer brands. The spa treatments, the cosmetic procedures, and the vacations, Veronica. It's all from the company,” Estelle snapped.“But why didn’t you say anything earlier? Why didn’t you warn me?!”Estelle’s eyes flashed. “Because I was busy trying to fix it while you were busy throwing tantrums and chasing after Edward like a lo
CHAPTER 106: It's poetic justice; it's karma The door slammed shut behind Veronica, the echo reverberating through the grand but hollow foyer. Her heels clicked sharply against the marble floor as she huffed in, the fury, and the pain from the restaurant confrontation still coursing through her veins. She was barely holding herself together as it was. Everything seemed to mock her as the opulent chandelier above cast fragmented light, mirroring the chaos within her.She tossed her black purse onto the console table, its contents spilling out: a lipstick, a compact mirror, and a pressed powder. None of it mattered. She wouldn't even care if any of it got ruined. Her life was almost ruined as it was. Her world was unravelling, tilting on its axis, and she needed solace, something to anchor her, or at least a drink. As she entered the living room, the scent of expensive whiskey hit her before she saw him. Dylan lounged on the velvet chaise, a crystal tumbler in hand, his shirt unbutton
CHAPTER 105: This is the endBenicio’s hands clenched tightly. “I'm going to say this just once, and I'm not—”Sarah got up from her seat and pressed his hand firmly. He turned to her, and she gave him a subtle nod, and he took a step back. The young mother was livid. She would never let anyone talk down on her children. She was about to show Veronica that she did not need anyone to fight her battles for her.Her voice was low but firm. “You don’t know what happened that night. And don’t you ever call my children names again. This is me asking nicely.”Veronica barked out a humourless laugh. “Oh, Sarah. Just like I told your bodyguard over there. I'm not scared of you. And about what you said, I know enough! You seduced him, and then he found out about your act. He kicked you out. And then, like the scheming little wretch you are, you disappeared to have your secret little bastards! Now you want to come back into his life and sabotage me to get him back in your trap because you had hi
CHAPTER 3: I'm not a whoreSarah was confused, she had no idea of what she was talking about. She had done nothing to Veronica. Has something happened to her? “Do you know this woman, Mrs Maxwell?” He asked with his authoritative tone.Estelle bobbed her head as she wiped away her tears. “Yes. She
CHAPTER 6: That's why you love meSarah hurried into the school premises with a lot of fear and anxiety. She would not be able to take it if anything happened to any of her babies. She almost tripped on her heels, but continued her journey to the children's classroom despite the dull ache in her an
Chapter 5: More than a strangerSarah gasped softly. Despite her shock, she quickly managed to maintain a calm expression. She never expected him to be their new business partner.Edward was momentarily shocked to see the same pair of baby blues that often flashed in his mind. She looked very diffe
CHAPTER 4: I can take care of myself Sarah arrived at the school premises and hurried into the large hall. A quick glance at her wristwatch told her that she had managed to arrive on time. She spotted Benicio in the front row with a camcorder in his hands, ready and waiting to record every moment
