Chapter 2

Author: Sweet Arsenic
The next day, I went to the animal rescue center.

Officially, I was there to return some equipment the wedding studio had borrowed for a shoot.

The volunteers all knew Eugene. They also knew Charlotte as the woman everyone online thought was his girlfriend.

I had barely set the equipment case down when a young volunteer hurried over. "You're Eugene's friend, right? Is he coming today, too?"

I shook my head. "No. I'm just here to return some equipment."

"Oh." She looked disappointed for a second, then smiled again. "That's okay. His girlfriend's here, anyway. Those two are always together."

Another volunteer, who was feeding the cats, laughed. "Seriously, Eugene and his girlfriend are basically our resident couple. They're so cute together."

His girlfriend.

The words rang in my ears.

I looked across the room and saw the woman they were talking about.

Charlotte.

A few volunteers stood around her, teasing her as she laughed.

"Stop calling me that. We're just work partners."

She said it easily, without the slightest hint of embarrassment at being mistaken for his girlfriend.

Then Eugene walked in.

He carried several cases of canned food for the rescue and headed straight for Charlotte, as if going to her was the most natural thing in the world.

The volunteers immediately started teasing him.

"Eugene, back to volunteer with your girlfriend again?"

Eugene just smiled.

He didn't correct them. Not even once.

His eyes moved around the room before stopping on me.

Just then, a representative from one of the rescue's sponsors walked over and glanced between us. "Eugene, who's this?"

For one stupid second, I still hoped.

I hoped he would tell them I was his fiancée.

Instead, Eugene answered casually, "A friend. She's editing the video for our wedding."

A friend.

Just days before our wedding, surrounded by people who already thought he and Charlotte were a couple, Eugene introduced me as nothing more than a friend.

I still remembered what happened three years ago, when Eugene won a major industry award, and reporters crowded around him at the reception afterward.

I instinctively stepped up beside him, but he quickly pulled me aside.

"There are too many people here and too many cameras. Stay out of sight for now."

Back then, I thought he was trying to protect me.

Now I understood that keeping me hidden had always been the rule, and it was a rule that only applied to me.

Across the room, the crew started setting up for a livestream.

Charlotte's lav mic sat slightly crooked on her collar. Eugene walked over without hesitation, leaned in, and adjusted it for her.

The way he did it looked effortless and familiar, like he had done it a hundred times before.

Charlotte looked up at him and complained, "That light almost blinded me just now."

Eugene immediately turned to the lighting technician. "Use a softer light. Her eyes are sensitive."

Then Eugene adjusted the camera for Charlotte and had her lean against his shoulder so she would sit comfortably in the frame.

The focus in his eyes, the quiet tenderness, was exactly what I had seen in those videos again and again.

Once the livestream started, Charlotte pulled something shiny from her pocket and held it up to the camera.

"Ta-da! Look at our custom pet tag for the collab!"

It was a silver bone-shaped tag engraved with their account initials: EC&CE.

Eugene took it from her with a smile and fastened it around her neck himself.

The comments immediately went wild.

[OMG, is this their official relationship announcement?]

[They're endgame. I'm calling it now!]

I couldn't watch anymore. I turned around and left.

When I got home, I opened the cloud drive Eugene and I shared.

We had been together for five years, taken countless trips, and made more memories than I could count.

I sorted the folders by date and went back to the day their account first went live three years ago. Then, I started scrolling.

There were thousands of photos and video clips, and almost every one of them was Charlotte.

Charlotte laughing. Charlotte goofing around. Charlotte holding the cat. Charlotte asleep with her head on Eugene's shoulder.

He had saved all of it, carefully organized by date.

Then I searched my own name.

Nothing.

The only trace of me anywhere in the archive was one rejected photo from three years ago.

Eugene's back was barely visible as he walked out of frame because he told me not to include him in the shot.

I had spent five years by his side, but in the memories he chose to keep, I barely existed.

I closed the laptop and pulled a dusty storage box from the closet.

I had bought it for the move into our new home. Now, I used it to pack up the life I was leaving behind.

My film reels, my restoration tools, the old camera my grandmother left me. One by one, I packed away everything that was mine.

I didn't explain what I was doing to Eugene.

I didn't need his camera turned on me anymore. I didn't need him to acknowledge me, either.

When I chose to leave the shared cloud library, a warning appeared on the screen.

One year later. My solo film restoration exhibition, The Absentee, opened at Hillside's most prestigious arts center. The main poster featured a self-portrait I had restored from my faint reflection in the glass of that old family photo.I wasn't smiling in it. I simply looked past the camera, calm and steady.Eugene came on opening day. He booked a ticket online and walked in like any other visitor. He quietly viewed every piece in the exhibition, then stopped at the guest book and wrote a single line.[Congratulations. You found yourself.]Then he left without saying another word.I thought that would be the last time our paths crossed that year. Then, on the night the exhibition closed, a heavy storm rolled through Hillside.I carried the last box of archived materials out through the back entrance and headed for my car. That was when I saw him.Eugene stood beneath a streetlight in the parking lot, soaked to the skin, clutching an old Leica camera against his chest."L

After that, Eugene stopped coming to see me.But every now and then, I still came across traces of him online.First, the pet account, which had grown to more than a million followers, posted a lengthy statement.Eugene didn't delete any of the old videos. He left them up and addressed them directly. In the statement, he laid out the timeline of our relationship alongside the three years he had worked with Charlotte. He admitted that he had let people believe they were a couple and, at times, had even played into that impression. He also admitted that he had been willing to share parts of his life with Charlotte publicly while holding me to a completely different standard. He didn't blame Charlotte or accuse their followers of misunderstanding. He took responsibility for it himself. Not long after that, he ended every sponsorship and brand deal that had marketed him and Charlotte as a couple. He returned the money he had already been paid and covered the penalties for ending th

Over the next few months, Eugene came back twice. The first time, he brought a batch of old photographs we needed for the restoration exhibition. The second, he used the exhibition as an excuse to stop by again.I knew that wasn't really why he came. That day, he sat beside my workstation for a long time before finally sliding an external hard drive toward me."These are photos I took of you over the past three years." His eyes were red, and his voice shook. "I thought keeping them private meant I loved you."His hands trembled as he pulled out his phone and opened one of the backup copies. It was a photo of me cleaning one of his lenses, my head lowered as warm evening light fell across my face. The shot was so carefully framed, so unexpectedly tender, that for a moment I didn't know what to say."You cleaning my lenses. You asleep on the couch. I took pictures of all of it. I really did."He held the phone out to me like it was proof of something."Louisa, just look. Please.

Eight months passed before I knew it.By then, I had settled into a comfortable routine at Hillside.Film restoration demanded patience and focus. I threw myself into the work so completely that I barely paid attention to anything outside it.I took the lead on one of the restoration projects, managed a small team, and made a few new friends who shared my interests. On weekends, we went hiking, tried new restaurants, or caught whatever movie had just come out.For the first time in years, my life no longer revolved around Eugene.I thought that was how things would stay. We would move on and live separate lives. Then one day, an exhibition featuring a restored film project I had led opened at the Hillside Museum of Art.After the event ended, I looked toward the gallery entrance and saw someone I knew instantly, even though he somehow felt like a stranger now.Eugene.He had lost a lot of weight, and the arrogance he once carried so easily was gone. In its place was a kind of

While Eugene stood alone in the empty apartment, his phone rang again. It was Ursula."Eugene, maybe it's for the best that the wedding was canceled. Louisa was always so quiet and reserved. She never really fit in with our family."There wasn't a hint of regret in her voice. If anything, she sounded relieved."Besides, Charlotte's a wonderful girl. She's cheerful, outgoing, and you two get along so well. I invited her over for dinner tonight, so make sure you come home early."For once, Eugene pushed back. "Mom, stop trying to set me up.""Set you up?" Ursula's voice rose. "Charlotte's been working with you for three years. She looked completely natural standing beside you in that family portrait. Everyone online thinks you two belong together. Are they all wrong?"Eugene had no answer.Because everything she said made sense. After he hung up, a message from Charlotte appeared on his phone.[Your mom invited me over for dinner. I wanna know… What exactly are we now?]He st

Eugene got the first call while he was driving to the wedding studio. It was his best friend and best man."Eugene, what the hell is going on with you and Louisa? Why was the wedding canceled? My phone's been blowing up with calls from people asking what happened."Eugene tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "Louisa sent that message?""Of course she did. She told everyone the wedding was off. What did you do?"Eugene hung up, his expression darkening. He was still convinced I was throwing a tantrum, pulling some childish stunt to get his attention. When he reached the studio and walked into the empty venue, something finally felt wrong. The display area that should've been filled with our engagement photos and wedding décor had been completely cleared out. Every vehicle we had booked to shuttle guests had been canceled. The wedding planner shifted awkwardly. "Mr. Chapman, Ms. Perry came in seven days ago and finalized all the cancellations. She also paid the cancellatio
