Chapter 1

Author: Sweet Arsenic
After I sent the message canceling the wedding, I sat alone in the study, my hands and feet ice-cold.

On the screen in front of me was the pet account's entire posting history from the past three years. All 1,095 days of it.

Eugene Chapman appeared in every single one.

Sometimes, I saw his profile. Sometimes just his back. Sometimes, he held the ragdoll cat named Mochi in his arms, smiling at the camera with a softness I knew all too well.

I turned off my phone.

The living room light was still on. For the past five years, I had always left it on whenever he came home late.

Then I heard a key turn in the front door.

Eugene was home.

He took off his coat and walked over to me, a slight frown on his face.

"You still haven't finished the wedding intro video?"

He didn't explain why he was home so late. He didn't seem to notice anything different about me, either.

I looked at him calmly. "Almost."

He apparently didn't notice the chill in my voice and went on, "It's due tomorrow. Don't forget."

Then he tossed his camera bag onto the couch. A black camera remote slipped out of the side pocket and rolled across the rug.

My heart sank.

I knew that remote.

I had seen Charlotte Ellis holding the exact same one in countless videos, laughing as she called to Eugene behind the camera, "Eugene, start recording!"

So he didn't just happen to appear in those videos; he was the one filming them.

Eugene bent down and picked up the remote. When he noticed me staring at it, he casually slipped it back into his bag.

"What are you looking at?"

I swallowed the lump in my throat. "Eugene, what's going on with that pet account?"

His expression immediately turned impatient. "I already told you. It's work. I'm collaborating with a pet influencer."

"Your job requires you to be in her videos every day? For three years?"

"What are you trying to make this into now?" His voice rose. "Louisa, can you be an adult about this? Stop turning everything into a relationship problem."

"I just wanted to know…"

"You don't need to know," he cut in. "Just do what you're supposed to do and finish editing the wedding video."

He was always like this.

Grow up. It's work. Stop being so needy.

Any time I asked a question or told him something hurt me, he used the same few words to shut me down.

In the past, I would've apologized right away and wondered what I had done wrong.

That night, I just nodded. "Okay."

Satisfied that I wasn't going to argue, he turned and headed for the bathroom.

As soon as the shower started, I opened my chat with the curator. A new message waited for me.

[Ms. Perry, are you sure you'd like to accept the two-year film restoration residency at the Hillside Film Archive? You previously declined the offer because of your wedding plans.]

I once gave up an opportunity I had worked toward for years because I thought Eugene and I were building a life together.

Now, I was choosing it for myself.

[Yes. I'd like to accept. Thank you for keeping the offer open.]

The next morning, Eugene realized his camera batteries weren't charged, and his shooting notes weren't laid out on the table like usual.

He searched the apartment, growing more irritated by the second. "Louisa, where's my spare battery?"

I kept packing my film restoration tools without looking up. "I don't know. Find it yourself."

He stopped and stared at me in surprise.

I ignored him and used the refunds from the wedding vendors to cover the cancellation fees one by one.

Eugene always used work as an excuse to leave all the wedding planning to me, so every vendor only had my contact information. That made it easy to cancel everything without involving him.

The venue, the officiant, the transportation. I canceled every last reservation myself.

Then I logged into the studio's employee portal and submitted my resignation.

A confirmation box appeared.

[Are you sure you want to submit your resignation?]

I clicked [Yes].

A moment later, my phone buzzed with an email from Hillside.

[Ms. Perry, we're pleased to confirm your acceptance into the Hillside Film Archive's residency. Orientation begins in seven days.]

I opened our online seating chart and removed myself from the head table.

As far as Eugene knew, the wedding was still going ahead exactly as planned. He just didn't know his bride had already walked away.

One year later. My solo film restoration exhibition, The Absentee, opened at Hillside's most prestigious arts center. The main poster featured a self-portrait I had restored from my faint reflection in the glass of that old family photo.I wasn't smiling in it. I simply looked past the camera, calm and steady.Eugene came on opening day. He booked a ticket online and walked in like any other visitor. He quietly viewed every piece in the exhibition, then stopped at the guest book and wrote a single line.[Congratulations. You found yourself.]Then he left without saying another word.I thought that would be the last time our paths crossed that year. Then, on the night the exhibition closed, a heavy storm rolled through Hillside.I carried the last box of archived materials out through the back entrance and headed for my car. That was when I saw him.Eugene stood beneath a streetlight in the parking lot, soaked to the skin, clutching an old Leica camera against his chest."L

After that, Eugene stopped coming to see me.But every now and then, I still came across traces of him online.First, the pet account, which had grown to more than a million followers, posted a lengthy statement.Eugene didn't delete any of the old videos. He left them up and addressed them directly. In the statement, he laid out the timeline of our relationship alongside the three years he had worked with Charlotte. He admitted that he had let people believe they were a couple and, at times, had even played into that impression. He also admitted that he had been willing to share parts of his life with Charlotte publicly while holding me to a completely different standard. He didn't blame Charlotte or accuse their followers of misunderstanding. He took responsibility for it himself. Not long after that, he ended every sponsorship and brand deal that had marketed him and Charlotte as a couple. He returned the money he had already been paid and covered the penalties for ending th

Over the next few months, Eugene came back twice. The first time, he brought a batch of old photographs we needed for the restoration exhibition. The second, he used the exhibition as an excuse to stop by again.I knew that wasn't really why he came. That day, he sat beside my workstation for a long time before finally sliding an external hard drive toward me."These are photos I took of you over the past three years." His eyes were red, and his voice shook. "I thought keeping them private meant I loved you."His hands trembled as he pulled out his phone and opened one of the backup copies. It was a photo of me cleaning one of his lenses, my head lowered as warm evening light fell across my face. The shot was so carefully framed, so unexpectedly tender, that for a moment I didn't know what to say."You cleaning my lenses. You asleep on the couch. I took pictures of all of it. I really did."He held the phone out to me like it was proof of something."Louisa, just look. Please.

Eight months passed before I knew it.By then, I had settled into a comfortable routine at Hillside.Film restoration demanded patience and focus. I threw myself into the work so completely that I barely paid attention to anything outside it.I took the lead on one of the restoration projects, managed a small team, and made a few new friends who shared my interests. On weekends, we went hiking, tried new restaurants, or caught whatever movie had just come out.For the first time in years, my life no longer revolved around Eugene.I thought that was how things would stay. We would move on and live separate lives. Then one day, an exhibition featuring a restored film project I had led opened at the Hillside Museum of Art.After the event ended, I looked toward the gallery entrance and saw someone I knew instantly, even though he somehow felt like a stranger now.Eugene.He had lost a lot of weight, and the arrogance he once carried so easily was gone. In its place was a kind of

While Eugene stood alone in the empty apartment, his phone rang again. It was Ursula."Eugene, maybe it's for the best that the wedding was canceled. Louisa was always so quiet and reserved. She never really fit in with our family."There wasn't a hint of regret in her voice. If anything, she sounded relieved."Besides, Charlotte's a wonderful girl. She's cheerful, outgoing, and you two get along so well. I invited her over for dinner tonight, so make sure you come home early."For once, Eugene pushed back. "Mom, stop trying to set me up.""Set you up?" Ursula's voice rose. "Charlotte's been working with you for three years. She looked completely natural standing beside you in that family portrait. Everyone online thinks you two belong together. Are they all wrong?"Eugene had no answer.Because everything she said made sense. After he hung up, a message from Charlotte appeared on his phone.[Your mom invited me over for dinner. I wanna know… What exactly are we now?]He st

Eugene got the first call while he was driving to the wedding studio. It was his best friend and best man."Eugene, what the hell is going on with you and Louisa? Why was the wedding canceled? My phone's been blowing up with calls from people asking what happened."Eugene tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "Louisa sent that message?""Of course she did. She told everyone the wedding was off. What did you do?"Eugene hung up, his expression darkening. He was still convinced I was throwing a tantrum, pulling some childish stunt to get his attention. When he reached the studio and walked into the empty venue, something finally felt wrong. The display area that should've been filled with our engagement photos and wedding décor had been completely cleared out. Every vehicle we had booked to shuttle guests had been canceled. The wedding planner shifted awkwardly. "Mr. Chapman, Ms. Perry came in seven days ago and finalized all the cancellations. She also paid the cancellatio
