Chapter 3

Autor: Resting Perch
Matteo's POV

"The cake is pretty sweet, but not as sweet as us," Luca said with a grin.

The woman off-camera let out a soft laugh, and his eyes crinkled with unguarded happiness.

By the time Luca had polished off half the cake, I'd finished choking down a bowl of crappy instant noodles.

On screen, his second phone lit up. As he looked at it, his eyes reddened, his features frozen in shock.

A few seconds later, in front of more than a hundred thousand viewers, he gasped, his whole body trembling.

The livestream cut out abruptly. I was still in a daze when Daniela's call came through.

She didn't give me a second to breathe before her fury came tearing down the line. "Matteo! You actually leaked my relationship with Luca online over a bowl of chicken broth and a few maids? If anything happens to Luca because of this, that worthless life of yours won't be enough to pay for it!"

I tried to explain. "I don't know what you're talking about. I just got home, and I've been eating—"

"You're still denying it? Luca said he sent those photos to you by accident. Nobody else has even seen them, not even me! And you've been to this same resort before. I even saw you lurking in Luca's livestream."

She spat the last words through gritted teeth.

If I'd been standing in front of her right then, she'd have kicked me to the ground and forced me onto my knees to beg Luca for forgiveness.

It was just like last winter. Luca's knees had been aching after a game of basketball, and he'd demanded that I come take care of him.

Back then, I was still weak from the internal bleeding in my gut. The second the word "sorry" left my lips, she kicked me to the floor.

I cracked my head against the tile that day, blood running down my face, before Luca finally choked out that he forgave me.

Daniela's furious breathing through the phone dragged me back to the present. I looked down at the dregs of the noodle broth. "It wasn't me. I've got no reason to do that."

On her end, Luca's voice rose with fear again. "Dani, I think someone outside is watching me. I'm scared…"

The line went dead. I sat frozen at the dining table, staring into space.

Sure enough, less than ten minutes later, Daniela's men punched in the door code. They burst in, dragged me out, and hauled me away like a sack of potatoes.

"Move it! Ms. Falcone wants you out there to take a knife for Mr. Bianchi right now!"

The hot spring resort had a massive floor-to-ceiling window.

I'd been ordered to sit at the dining table right in front of it and read. Meanwhile, tucked into the safest corner of the room, Daniela softly comforted a terrified Luca.

"Don't be scared. I'm right here. I'll protect you."

His whole body pressed against hers, his long fingers clutching her leather jacket.

"Dani, are they going to kill me? Are they going to beat me? I'm so scared…"

"No. You're completely safe here. I promise you, nothing is going to happen to you."

Their voices dropped to a murmur as Luca wrapped his arms around her.

"Dani, what would I ever do without you?"

"Don't talk nonsense. You'll never be without me. I'll stay by your side until we're old and gray."

The sounds of them kissing were impossible to block out. Even with my eyes glued to the page, every wet noise cut straight into my ears.

They made out for a solid half hour, stopping just short of going all the way.

"Dani, Matteo is still right there. He's your husband, after all. Maybe you should have someone protect him too?"

Daniela shot a freezing glare my way. "If he hadn't leaked our photos and location, you wouldn't be this terrified. He brought this on himself."

I tried desperately to focus on the words on the page, but my vision blurred. I was supposed to be numb to the pain by now. So why the hell was I crying?

I didn't get it, and I didn't care to find out.

Eventually, days of accumulated trauma and exhaustion caught up with me, and I drifted off.

I woke to the robotic voice in my head chiming "24 hours remaining" right as Daniela's palm cracked across my face.

"Matteo, how can you be so malicious? Sneaking in here while I was asleep!"

I bolted upright, tearing the stitches in my stomach, and hissed at the sudden pain.

"Stop playing the goddamn victim! Talk—where's Luca?"

Only then did I notice that, at some point during the night, I'd ended up in the bedroom.

And Luca was gone.

"I don't know," I rasped. "I remember being by the glass window last night—"

Matteo's POVDaniela's words tumbled over one another, as if she were terrified that if she paused for even a single second, I'd vanish into thin air right before her eyes again.I stared down at her. The cold, ruthless edge that usually defined the terrifying underworld queen was completely gone.I felt nothing but confusion. "Daniela, you never loved me. You resented me. You always wished I was dead. So why are you begging me to come back now?"I gave a mocking laugh. "What, is your precious Luca in trouble again? You need me to be his human shield?"My questions twisted Daniela's face with pure agony."No… no, it's not like that! It was only after you left that I found out the truth. Luca was pulling the strings the entire time."She choked on a sob. "Every single time you were taken, I ordered my men to pull you out immediately. But he intercepted the orders. He delayed them by two hours on purpose because he wanted you dead… "But you don't have to worry about him anymore.

Matteo's POV"But since I'm the one who put you in that world, I owe you some compensation."The System paused a beat before continuing, "After you were wiped out, Daniela completely lost her mind."I froze at the words."In your final hour there, she discovered how much you loved her. The guilt forced her to break through her memory suppression. Everyone else has forgotten you ever existed, but she remembers. She's been tearing the entire world apart looking for you."Right now, that world is rapidly collapsing under the weight of her obsession. Unless you go back, it's going to dissolve into nothingness.""Do you want to go back?" the System asked tentatively. While I was spacing out, Vivian walked over and waved a hand in front of my face."What are you daydreaming about? I'm starving. Come grab dinner with me."I snapped out of it and gave her a nod.But in my head, I answered the System, "No. I never felt a single shred of kindness in that world. I can't think of one sou

Daniela's POVMy chest heaved as I flashed back through the past three years. Every single time Matteo had been kidnapped, I'd rushed to the rescue the moment I got word. But every single time, Luca would call, and I would leave. There had been eight kidnappings in all, and each time my men had waited two hours before rescuing him. I couldn't stop wondering how badly Matteo had been hurt or how many times his heart had broken over the course of those hours."Dani, I know I was wrong! Please, don't leave me!"Luca tugged frantically at my pant leg, tears streaming down his panicked face. "This really is the first time I've ever done anything like this! I've never hurt anyone before, I swear!"But I wasn't seeing Luca. All I could see was Matteo's face—stubborn and utterly detached. When we first got married, he used to smile. His eyes used to be full of life.He would cook for me, tell me about his day, and pull me down beside him to read together. But back then, my mind had bee

Daniela's POVMy eyes darted wildly as I bolted out the door.I tore through my phone, but every trace of Matteo was gone. His number no longer existed. Our marriage certificate was nowhere to be found, and even the photo the housekeeper had sent me had vanished from our chat history, as if it had never been sent at all.I rushed to the exact road where I'd abandoned him and demanded the traffic camera footage. The screens showed the road clear and empty—neither of us had ever been there.I even tracked down the rivals who had kidnapped him before, but every single one of them swore they'd never heard the name.I was losing my mind, spiraling into a feverish obsession. I scoured every corner of the city, even forcing myself to walk into a police station—a place I would never dream of setting foot in. But the answer was always the same."Matteo Linari? Never heard of him.""I'm sorry, but there's no record of anyone by that name in the national database."After searching in vain

  • Mission: Save the Underworld Queen, or Die   Chapter 7

Daniela's POVFor a second, it felt like something struck me at the back of the head, and the memories from that time came flooding back all at once.Back then, I had genuinely believed Matteo was just faking his agony for attention, and I'd been completely disgusted by him.To make matters worse, Luca's knees had been flaring up, and he had practically begged Matteo to just talk with him and keep him company, but Matteo had refused. In a fit of sheer irritation, I lashed out and kicked him right in the chest. An inexplicable panic flared in my chest. I scrambled to leave, but before I could take a step, Luca walked out of the boutique, his brow furrowed."Dani, I suddenly feel really dizzy."I tucked my phone away at once and rushed him to the hospital. Two hours later, the doctor confirmed there was nothing wrong with Luca. Just a mild cold.Luca tugged gently at the hem of my jacket, looking up at me with apologetic eyes. "I'm so sorry, Dani. I didn't mean to make you worry

  • Mission: Save the Underworld Queen, or Die   Chapter 6

Daniela's POVThe moment I made the turn, regret hit me.I looked back at Matteo lying broken on the road, and despite everything, I couldn't bring myself to be completely ruthless.I called my right-hand man, Carlo Marino. "Get a few guys out there to pick him up and get him to a hospital."After hanging up, I took Luca to a luxury watch boutique and did my best to cheer him up. The poor guy had been absolutely terrified these past few days.Years ago, to keep Luca safe, I had deliberately brought Matteo in to serve as his human shield. I spent so much time parading Matteo around at high-profile events, making sure the entire underworld believed he was my Achilles' heel. The strategy worked beautifully. Before that, every blind idiot looking to hurt me went after Luca. But afterward, whenever my rivals wanted revenge, Matteo was the first target they thought of.So even though Matteo had leaked Luca's location out of spite, I never actually wanted him dead.At most, I'd divorc
