Chapter 4

Penulis: Resting Perch
Matteo's POV

"Cut the crap! Where the hell did you chase Luca off to?" Daniela cut me off.

I shook my head. "I don't know."

She spat the words through gritted teeth. "Matteo, you'd better pray you really don't know. Because if you're lying, I will destroy you."

She stormed out, working her phone until she finally tracked down Luca's location.

"Round up some guys and bring him along!" she snapped.

With my feet bound tight, I lay trapped in the backseat of Daniela's car. She was behind the wheel, the gas pedal pinned to the floor.

In three years of marriage, she had always been ruthlessly calm. This was the first time I'd ever seen her lose control.

When we reached the docks, Luca was dangling from a crane above a boat, screaming at the top of his lungs.

"Dani! What took you so long? I'm so scared! Please save me!"

"Luca!" Daniela called out, her voice taut with panic.

She turned a murderous glare on her rival, Giovanni Rossi. "Let him go. I'll trade you my husband, plus two territories and ten storefronts."

Giovanni's scarred face split into a sly grin. "Deal."

As they slowly hoisted me up, Daniela held Luca tight in her arms, murmuring soothing words in his ear.

By the time I reached the top of the crane, she had already turned her back on me, walking away with the man she loved.

Once again, I watched her retreating back—only this time, Luca was at her side.

Giovanni lit a cigarette and cast a sidelong glance up at me. "Do it."

A red-hot branding iron slammed against my skin. I couldn't hold back the shriek that tore out of me.

"Just kill me!"

He shook his head. "Killing you quick wouldn't settle the score for my dead brothers. I'd rather take my time breaking you. I want everyone in the underworld to see that Daniela isn't untouchable."

I thrashed and writhed, but the iron found me over and over, searing my flesh until the pain choked the screams right out of my throat.

After what felt like an eternity of burning, just as I was about to black out, they finally lowered me down.

But I'd barely caught my breath when a sharp, stinging pain shot through my wrist. Giovanni had actually taken a knife to it, slicing it open, then shoving my hand into the sea.

Blood swirled into the dark sea, staining it red.

They pinned me down and wrenched my head toward my wrist, forcing me to watch my own life drain away.

And then, somehow, a laugh escaped me.

I wondered, "Daniela, if I died right here, would you find another human shield for your precious Luca? Or would you just marry him?"

Either way, it was none of my business anymore.

My consciousness began to blur. Just before I slipped away for good, Daniela's men finally showed up—late, as always.

I heard the muffled back-and-forth of a negotiation, and then I was hauled into an ambulance.

Inside, Daniela's men were playing cards at full volume, laughing without a care in the world. The noise was the only thing keeping me from going under.

Through the haze, I caught one of them talking. "Man, Ms. Falcone really treasures Mr. Bianchi. She wasn't even going to retaliate, but the second she saw the scratch on his wrist, she lost it and wiped every last one of them off the map herself."

"Hey, did you hear?" another chimed in. "For Mr. Bianchi's sake, Ms. Falcone's planning to wash her hands of the underworld."

When I woke again after being dragged back from the brink, the System told me I had six hours left.

All at once, what Daniela's men had said in the ambulance came back to me.

Daniela was walking away from the underworld—all because Luca had scraped his wrist.

I looked down at the gauze wrapped around my wrists, then at the countless scars covering my body, and let out a bitter laugh.

Something I had failed to achieve in three years of trying had just happened effortlessly.

Except I wasn't the one who'd completed the mission.

With four hours left on the clock, I ignored the hospital staff's protests, dragged my broken body out of bed, and headed back to the villa.

Before I left for good, I just wanted to look at that photo one last time.

But by the time I finally limped my way back, the yard was a wreck, and the house had been stripped bare.

The guest bedroom had been turned upside down.

Everything in the drawers was gone.

I scrambled to call Daniela. When she picked up, she didn't even try to hide her annoyance. "I'm going legit. I'm liquidating all my real estate. Once the cash is cleaned, I'll buy a new place. Find somewhere else to stay for now. Once Luca's settled down, we're getting a divorce."

I forced my mouth open, my voice shaking. "But the things in my bedroom drawer—"

She didn't even let me finish. "Matteo, don't push your luck! Luca got hurt because of you. I already went above and beyond by sending my men to save you. What, do you expect me to buy you a house just to store whatever garbage you keep in your drawers?"

Matteo's POVDaniela's words tumbled over one another, as if she were terrified that if she paused for even a single second, I'd vanish into thin air right before her eyes again.I stared down at her. The cold, ruthless edge that usually defined the terrifying underworld queen was completely gone.I felt nothing but confusion. "Daniela, you never loved me. You resented me. You always wished I was dead. So why are you begging me to come back now?"I gave a mocking laugh. "What, is your precious Luca in trouble again? You need me to be his human shield?"My questions twisted Daniela's face with pure agony."No… no, it's not like that! It was only after you left that I found out the truth. Luca was pulling the strings the entire time."She choked on a sob. "Every single time you were taken, I ordered my men to pull you out immediately. But he intercepted the orders. He delayed them by two hours on purpose because he wanted you dead… "But you don't have to worry about him anymore.

Matteo's POV"But since I'm the one who put you in that world, I owe you some compensation."The System paused a beat before continuing, "After you were wiped out, Daniela completely lost her mind."I froze at the words."In your final hour there, she discovered how much you loved her. The guilt forced her to break through her memory suppression. Everyone else has forgotten you ever existed, but she remembers. She's been tearing the entire world apart looking for you."Right now, that world is rapidly collapsing under the weight of her obsession. Unless you go back, it's going to dissolve into nothingness.""Do you want to go back?" the System asked tentatively. While I was spacing out, Vivian walked over and waved a hand in front of my face."What are you daydreaming about? I'm starving. Come grab dinner with me."I snapped out of it and gave her a nod.But in my head, I answered the System, "No. I never felt a single shred of kindness in that world. I can't think of one sou

Daniela's POVMy chest heaved as I flashed back through the past three years. Every single time Matteo had been kidnapped, I'd rushed to the rescue the moment I got word. But every single time, Luca would call, and I would leave. There had been eight kidnappings in all, and each time my men had waited two hours before rescuing him. I couldn't stop wondering how badly Matteo had been hurt or how many times his heart had broken over the course of those hours."Dani, I know I was wrong! Please, don't leave me!"Luca tugged frantically at my pant leg, tears streaming down his panicked face. "This really is the first time I've ever done anything like this! I've never hurt anyone before, I swear!"But I wasn't seeing Luca. All I could see was Matteo's face—stubborn and utterly detached. When we first got married, he used to smile. His eyes used to be full of life.He would cook for me, tell me about his day, and pull me down beside him to read together. But back then, my mind had bee

Daniela's POVMy eyes darted wildly as I bolted out the door.I tore through my phone, but every trace of Matteo was gone. His number no longer existed. Our marriage certificate was nowhere to be found, and even the photo the housekeeper had sent me had vanished from our chat history, as if it had never been sent at all.I rushed to the exact road where I'd abandoned him and demanded the traffic camera footage. The screens showed the road clear and empty—neither of us had ever been there.I even tracked down the rivals who had kidnapped him before, but every single one of them swore they'd never heard the name.I was losing my mind, spiraling into a feverish obsession. I scoured every corner of the city, even forcing myself to walk into a police station—a place I would never dream of setting foot in. But the answer was always the same."Matteo Linari? Never heard of him.""I'm sorry, but there's no record of anyone by that name in the national database."After searching in vain

  • Mission: Save the Underworld Queen, or Die   Chapter 7

Daniela's POVFor a second, it felt like something struck me at the back of the head, and the memories from that time came flooding back all at once.Back then, I had genuinely believed Matteo was just faking his agony for attention, and I'd been completely disgusted by him.To make matters worse, Luca's knees had been flaring up, and he had practically begged Matteo to just talk with him and keep him company, but Matteo had refused. In a fit of sheer irritation, I lashed out and kicked him right in the chest. An inexplicable panic flared in my chest. I scrambled to leave, but before I could take a step, Luca walked out of the boutique, his brow furrowed."Dani, I suddenly feel really dizzy."I tucked my phone away at once and rushed him to the hospital. Two hours later, the doctor confirmed there was nothing wrong with Luca. Just a mild cold.Luca tugged gently at the hem of my jacket, looking up at me with apologetic eyes. "I'm so sorry, Dani. I didn't mean to make you worry

  • Mission: Save the Underworld Queen, or Die   Chapter 6

Daniela's POVThe moment I made the turn, regret hit me.I looked back at Matteo lying broken on the road, and despite everything, I couldn't bring myself to be completely ruthless.I called my right-hand man, Carlo Marino. "Get a few guys out there to pick him up and get him to a hospital."After hanging up, I took Luca to a luxury watch boutique and did my best to cheer him up. The poor guy had been absolutely terrified these past few days.Years ago, to keep Luca safe, I had deliberately brought Matteo in to serve as his human shield. I spent so much time parading Matteo around at high-profile events, making sure the entire underworld believed he was my Achilles' heel. The strategy worked beautifully. Before that, every blind idiot looking to hurt me went after Luca. But afterward, whenever my rivals wanted revenge, Matteo was the first target they thought of.So even though Matteo had leaked Luca's location out of spite, I never actually wanted him dead.At most, I'd divorc
