“I have to go,” I said to Raven four hours later as I got dressed again.

“I know,” she said, and looked down.

“I’ll see you soon,” I said, and kissed her goodbye.

I headed out of the door and trudged through the trees back to my Jeep. There were ten missed calls from Kari when I checked my phone. I’d forgotten it in my car. I’d had every intention of just getting my amulet, and leaving again right away. I’d also been gone far longer than I had planned to be.

I parked the Jeep in the garage and opened the side door. The house was quiet and dark as I went upstairs. Kari was lying on the bed, and I went into the bathroom to shower. When I exited she was sitting up on the bed, her arms crossed over her chest. She was beyond pissed.

“Where were you?” she asked me.

“I told you,” I said, and walked past her to the cupboard.

“Don’t lie to me, Kai! Where were you, because you weren’t with your dad!”

“Just out, okay,” I said, as I started getting dressed.

“How long have you been seeing her?” sh

“We have to check the rest of the place,” I said to Kiran, as he watched the little girl with a mixture of guilt and relief on his face.We went through the open doors, back into the hallway, and found a kitchen with four tables and chairs. Three people were in the kitchen busy cooking and cleaning. Behind the kitchen was a scullery, and we turned back through the kitchen into another doorway which looked like a storage room. We went to the far end of the building which had a cold room.“That man hasn’t exited the building yet,” Levi said.“Just keep an eye out,” Kiran said. There was nobody around, so I opened the door and immediately regretted it. It housed all the bodies of the dead children and a few teenagers. They were in clear plastic coverings, and I could see their faces. I shut the door again quickly and I bent my head down as I tried to get that image from my head.“Levi, we counted two men in the front part of the building, by the sliding door. They both have guns, the res

I switched the kettle on as Kari sat down at the kitchen table big enough for four. It wasn’t an overly large house. It had three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It was a starter home, but it was big enough for us, and she hadn’t said anything about it, other than her dislike for the green kitchen.“Will you tell me about the girl?” She asked.“I saw her in California for the first time. She was sitting against the bathroom wall. She was dead and asked for my help; every time, the same way, sitting against the bathroom wall, crying, but as soon as I asked her how to help her, she disappeared. The same thing happened when I came home. I found her in my bathroom, then last night, I saw her in the hallway, walking past our reception and I couldn’t believe it, because she was alive and okay,” I said.“How can she appear dead to you in a vision when she’s still alive now?” Kari asked me, with a frown.“All I can guess is that it was her future self whom I saw. I saw it again when I touched he

I left the den alone with Falcon opting to go back with Levi to check weapons, and more likely to spend time with Tala. I didn’t mind, my emotions were a mess with the dream I’d had, and the realization that what I’d seen with the little girl was true.I took my phone out before starting the Jeep and dialed Kari’s number. “What?” The way she answered her phone had me clenching my jaw tightly.“Geez, why are you so moody?” I asked her.“Really? After what you said to me this morning? You’re wondering why I’m moody?” She said.“I’m sorry, but we should talk. Are you still at the hotel, or are you at home?” I asked her.“I’m still at the hotel, but I’ll ask my dad to come pick me up,” she said.“Why? You’re my responsibility, or did you think you were going back to your father’s house?” I asked her, already irritated by her.“I wasn’t really sure after this morning,” she said.“I’ll be there in five minutes,” I said, and she ended the call without saying goodbye. That just pissed me off

Kari shifted on the bed and sat up straight. Her gaze bore into me, and I couldn’t look at her. I did feel guilty about Raven, and it was hard to explain. I didn’t feel the guilt when I was with Raven, only when I was with Kari.“Kai, are you seeing someone else?” she asked me and got out of bed, pulling her robe on. “Kai! Answer me!” Anger radiated off her, and I sighed.“It doesn’t matter anymore. We weren’t together then,” I said, trying to salvage the situation.“Yeah, you’re right. It doesn’t matter anymore because I saw someone else, too,” she said, and slammed the bathroom door closed.I got up and pulled jeans on and slammed my hand against the bathroom door. “You can’t stay in there forever!”The bathroom door opened, and she glared at me. “This was a mistake.” She sat down on the bed and chills crept all the way down my spine.“Is this baby even mine?” I asked her. She looked at me first in shock, then in anger, and opened her mouth to say something when my phone rang. It wa

I sat on Levi’s porch steps and waited. I had no idea where he’d gone after the wedding, but I knew he wasn’t home. His truck lights nearly blinded me when he finally pulled into his driveway, and parked his truck in front of his garage.“Kai,” he said, looking at me worriedly. Great, he must have spoken to Kiran and heard about my little meltdown. “We have to talk,” I said, and he sat down next to me. I handed him the piece of paper that I’d been clutching in my hand for the last hour and he looked at it.“A license plate number?”“I need to know everything you can find out about who owns that car, where it’s been, and where it is now,” I said to him.“And then?” he asked me.“Then I’ll talk to Kiran,” I said.“Are you sure about this, Kai?” he asked me.“Yes. I can’t leave this. I know what I saw, and I know what’s going to happen to her. I can’t not do anything,” I said.Levi nodded his head. “Okay, kid. I’ll call Jennifer.”“Thank you, Levi. I know how it sounds but I need you to
