“Jace,” I said, as he looked at me and ran to the kitchen sink. It was the first time I wasn’t bothered by someone else’s vomit as I held Kari in my arms.His retching quieted down, and my bloody fingers trailed down Kari’s face. “Call Adara!”“Your dad,” Jace said, and I looked back at Kiran.I let go of Kari and I went back to him and touched his face, smearing more blood over him as I listened to his chest and to his heart, but there was nothing there. I was sitting on the floor, crying, and holding Kiran’s head on my lap when Adara ran into the house.“Kai!” she yelled out to me.“Mom,” I said softly. “Heal her.” I sobbed as Adara knelt next to Kiran, and she looked at me as she cried.“Kiran,” she cried, and lay down half on top of him.“Heal her!” I yelled at Adara.“You can’t heal death, Kai. Falcon sat back down at the kitchen table, and I could feel the empathy rolling off him. I hated the pity, but strangely enough, coming from him, I appreciated it. He was one of the few people who knew exactly what was going on in my house. I knew Levi knew as well, but he’d never talk to Kiran about it. He wouldn’t interfere unless I asked for his help.“I don’t know what to tell you, man, but I think this is much more than just depression,” Falcon said.“I tend to agree with you. I don’t know if this is pent up rage from Gunnar and James’ deaths, but some days, I can almost taste the hate she has for me. The days passed agonizingly slow, and things with Kari had gone from bad to worse. There wasn’t much I could do. I couldn’t divorce her, and I couldn’t leave her. Divorce didn’t exist in our world, and it hurt that I loved her while she seemingly hated me.I sighed as I pulled the Jeep into the garage, and looked at the closed side door. I really didn’t want to be at home but I had to suck it up and be a man about it. I could only hope that Kari would get better once she’d given birth.I walked into the kitchen, and smiled at Falcon as he stood up from the kitchen table where he’d been busy stripping a pistol. He switched the kettle on and took two cups from the cupboard. We walked out of the doctor’s office, and I opened the Jeep’s door for her. I would worry about getting her car later. I helped her inside and she rested her head against the window. She looked shocked, but she also looked guilty. Was I imagining that?I climbed into the driver’s seat and turned to look at her. “I’ll call Adara to tell her you’re not coming back to work today.” Kari didn’t answer me, and she barely nodded her head.“I want to go home,” she whispered.“Okay.”I drove away from the doctor’s office and headed to our house. The house was quiet, and I helped her upstairs. She sat down on the bed, and I took her shoes off. She turned away from me and climbed under the covers, still fully clothed.She started to cry, and I laid down next to her. I moved up against her and put my hand across her stomach. Four months later…The further along Kari’s pregnancy progressed, the more she deteriorated mentally and emotionally. I was convinced that she was suffering from some sort of depression, but talking to her about it only resulted in fights so big, I’d had to sleep on the couch for weeks on end.Nothing had changed for me, and I still loved her with everything in me. I kept telling myself that after the baby was born, things would go back to normal, that her hormones were wreaking havoc with her emotions, and that she couldn’t help it.I worked longer hours, just so I didn’t have to be at home, and even Kiran had picked up on it. He just told me to man up, and find wherever I’d left my balls, and reattach them.
