Chapter 5

Author: Flowering Tree
Upon hearing that, Henry stood rooted to the ground.

Felicity, however, shoved him aside and looked at the police officer, asking indifferently, "It's Christmas, not April Fool's, officer. How could Whitney possibly be dead when she was doing just fine a few days ago?"

Henry visibly relaxed after hearing Felicity's question. He then looked at the ring and said firmly, "You should know that a ring hardly proves anything. Whitney could have simply misplaced it. I'm sure nothing has happened to her."

The two police officers looked at each other before the lead officer made a phone call. Then, a moment later, he held out his phone to Henry, asking, "Is this your wife, Mr. Graham?"

Henry took the police officer's phone with a puzzled look on his face. The moment his eyes fell on the photo of the body, he dropped the phone.

Felicity couldn't help but frown at the commotion. She leaned down, picked up the phone, and screamed when she saw the photo. She then ran back into the house, cryi

It was already late into the night when the whole farce finally ended. It had been two days since I died, and the festive Christmas spirit had already begun to wane. There were already people taking down their Christmas trees and using the gifts they had received. Their joy-filled faces stood in jarring opposition to the grim figure of Henry, who sat utterly alone on a bench. It was then that a young girl ran up to him and placed a piece of candy in his hand, saying, "Please don't be sad, mister. It'll definitely be much better next year!"Henry held the candy tightly in his hand. He then smiled as he ruffled the young girl's hair, saying, "Alright."He smiled wryly as the young girl ran off laughing. He then looked down at the candy in his hand and murmured, "It's never going to be alright."His greatest love had already died, after all—taken from him right on the day that was supposed to be the happiest and most joyful of the year.He let out a deep, weary sigh, as if he had c

Henry kicked open the door to the ward, causing everyone in there to fall silent. Felicity rushed toward him with bloodshot eyes, while Mom was sobbing softly on the hospital bed."Why did it take you so long, Henry?" Felicity asked as she leaned into Henry's embrace, looking utterly pitiful.Henry shoved her away, then grabbed a stack of photos and threw them in her face. "It's because I was too busy looking into all the despicable things you've done!"Felicity picked up the photos, her face turning pale as she looked at them. "T-That's not what it looks like, Henry! P-Please hear me out, Henry!" Dad furrowed his brow as he picked up the photos. His expression immediately hardened before he slapped Felicity hard across the face. "You bitch! You're the one who murdered Whitney! Your mother and I truly believed that it was an accident! It turns out you've been lying to us from the very beginning!"Mom immediately dropped her pretense, pulling off the oxygen mask. "Had you not told

Henry thought about the events that had just transpired before slamming his hands on the steering wheel in anger. He felt like he hadn't hit Lillian hard enough for what she said earlier. He couldn't help but wonder how he had never noticed how malicious Lillian actually was. He was certain that if our baby had lived, she would have been as kind and gentle as I was.He sighed deeply at that thought, his brow furrowing even further.Felicity suddenly called Henry again. He was just about to reject her call when he noticed the photo she sent over. It was a photo of Mom, lying on a stretcher, with a group of paramedics carrying her into the ambulance. He hesitated for a moment before he ultimately drove to the hospital. He had just walked into the ward when Felicity burst into tears and yelled, "Do you know that you almost angered Mom to death? How could she not be grieving? She had raised Whitney for almost 30 years, for goodness' sake! She was just trying to put on a brave front bef

Henry didn't know how long he had been crying. His throat was raw, and his surroundings were dark when he finally raised his head from the steering wheel. He noticed a small cabin in the distance with a huge Christmas tree outside. Through the hazy glow of the window, he saw a family seated at the dining table, laughing and enjoying a meal together. He stared blankly at the scene before him, lost in thought. He realized that that should have been them, too, basking in such joy and wholesomeness. He then pondered when it had all begun to unravel. It had to have started on that cold, snowy night five years ago when Whitney was involved in a terrible car crash and lost their unborn child.Their relationship became tense after that incident. He would often see her crying when she thought he wasn't looking. He also knew that at night, she would reach out to gently caress his face, all while apologizing to him.He could never bring himself to face her, though—not because he couldn't fo

  • Mistake of a Lifetime: My Husband and My Sister's Child   Chapter 4

I didn't return home that night. I went to the place where the car crash happened instead—the place where my unborn child died. She was so tragically small that no one was able to collect any remains—not even a handful of ash.I was just standing there, looking at the road, when a pair of headlights suddenly flashed from a distance. It was then that the car screeched to a stop before me, and Felicity stepped out, leading Lillian by the hand. She then raised her head arrogantly and asked, "You must have already figured it all out, haven't you, Whitney?"I merely gave her a cold, fleeting glance and then turned away, remaining silent.Felicity scoffed and said, "I was right, then. You should do yourself a favor and divorce Henry now before he leaves you for good. It's going to be so much uglier if he's the one to do it, Whitney."Lillian chimed in, exclaiming, "You should just drop dead, Whitney! You're getting in the way of me being with Mommy and Daddy!"I looked coldly at the fur
