Chapter 2

Author: Seasons Overhead
Joanna rushed over to me, suspicion burning deep in her eyes. "You know where he is? So you said something to him, and that's why he left!"

I gritted through the pain and didn't engage. "Take me to the hospital, or I guarantee none of you will ever see him again."

The hospital reeked of antiseptic. Fallon claimed there were no beds available and stuck me out in the hallway. With my eyes closed, I could hear the whispers and snickers coming from every direction.

"That's the one who lived off the Cavanagh family for over 20 years, then schemed to drive out the real son!" a young-looking nurse whispered.

"Carol, he looks awful, though. He might even end up disfigured."

"Please. You don't know anything. That's what you call playing it smart. Cry a little, play the victim, and he gets to stay and keep living the good life."

No. That wasn't what this was. Ever since Chase came back, I had been genuinely happy for Mom and Dad. I'd already made peace with leaving.

I just couldn't let go of the bond I had with my parents and my sister, and even more than that, I couldn't let go of my feelings for Fallon.

But this time around, all I wanted was to get as far away as possible.

"Knox! I finally found you."

A petite young woman came running toward me, silhouetted against the light. I forced my scalded eyelids open and recognized her. It was Poppy Kendall, my mentee of three years.

"At this point, you're the only one still willing to come see me," I said, my voice hoarse, managing a bitter smile.

"That's not true! A lot of people are worried about you. Everyone's just been busy and couldn't get time off, so they sent me."

Poppy was still as naive as ever, unable to tell a polite excuse from the truth. Still, hearing her chirpy reassurances, something in my chest started to thaw.

"Joanna and Fallon went too far, putting you out in the hallway like this. It's so noisy. How are you supposed to rest?"

The warmth spread through me, all the way to my fingertips. But Poppy's next words froze the smile that hadn't even fully formed on my swollen, burning face.

"Knox, why don't you just tell me where Chase is? I'll go bring him back myself, and then Fallon and the others will leave you alone."

I slowly set down the apple she'd just peeled for me and looked her in the eye.

"Poppy, you've been under my wing since the day you joined the company. I was the one who cleaned up your messes every time you got into trouble, and I was the one who put my reputation on the line so you could get where you are today."

She squirmed and looked away, her eyes darting.

"I'm doing this for your own good, Knox. Just tell me where Chase is, and I'll get you into a private room on the top floor without even going through Fallon."

"Get out!"

I forced myself upright and hurled the fruit basket she'd brought onto the floor. She clearly hadn't expected me to lash out like that, and her face went pale.

"What's all the noise? This is a hospital," a familiar voice came from behind us, and I started trembling involuntarily. The burns on my face flared with pain.

"Knox, I'm giving you one more chance." Fallon waved off the nurse who was trying to change my bandages.

"Tell me where you're hiding Chase, or else…"

The skin on my face burned raw, but I wasn't going to cave the way I had in my last life. "Set the record straight about those photos, and I'll tell you."

I knew Fallon had the evidence that I'd been drugged and the full recordings that proved I'd been framed. In my last life, begging had gotten me nowhere. I didn't know if Chase's whereabouts would be enough to make her budge this time around.

"You really are nothing but a bastard. Give you an inch, and you take a mile."

She was livid, and it took Joanna rushing over to calm her down.

The youths stripped us both and put us in the same room to take the photos. Fallon had been listening the entire time and heard every word of their plan. But she didn't speak up.Instead, she actively helped create opportunities for them and quietly destroyed whatever evidence they left behind. The truth landed like a grenade. Murmurs rippled through the crowd, and every head turned toward Joanna and Fallon. Neither of them could hold onto their polished image anymore. Fallon's face in particular had gone so dark it looked like a storm was about to break. She looked up at Chase, searching for some kind of explanation, but he wouldn't even meet her eyes. So, she turned her fury on me instead."This was you. You put Chase up to this, you worthless piece of trash."Looking at the ugliness twisting Fallon's face, it finally clicked. The sweet, gentle childhood friend I'd once known was long gone, replaced by something hollowed out and corroded by greed. The only person who'd ever ea

"Who said you weren't invited? I'm the guest of honor. If I personally invite you, that should be good enough," Chase said.He had a point, but I still couldn't shake the worry. I had a feeling that whatever he was planning was going to cause a catastrophe, and I was starting to get cold feet."Maybe we should think of another way. If you ruin the Cavanaghs' banquet, it won't matter that you're their biological son. They won't let it slide."Chase waved it off and told me I was overthinking it. I couldn't argue him down, so I put on the suit and headed to the banquet with my nerves on edge."Sir, this is a private event. May I see your invitation?""The guest of honor invited me personally. I don't have one.""I'm sorry, but no one is admitted without an invitation."This wasn't what we'd agreed on. I'd planned to walk in alongside Chase so it wouldn't matter whether I had an invitation or not. But I'd waited and waited at the hospital, and he never showed. As the onlookers gat

"And I'm a consciousness from another world that crossed over into this body. I'm bound to a system that's designed to save cannon fodder, which means I have to save you. Otherwise, I'll never get back home."Chase let out a long breath. "God, it feels so much better to finally say it out loud."He gave my hand a squeeze, the same one I'd been gripping tightly, and grinned at me."Blown your mind, right?" He waved his hand in front of my face a couple times. "Hello? Come back to me.""Is all of that true?" I stared at him, wide-eyed. He had to be lying. If what he said was real, then why did he watch me die such an unjust death in my last life?"Every word. If I'm lying about any of this, may lightning strike me dead and may I never find my way home.""What are you doing?" I yanked his swearing hand down."You can't just go around making oaths like that. What if they actually come true?"He shrugged it off without a care. "See? Now you believe me."Looking into his bright, ear

He pressed his hand gently against my forehead to check my temperature. Apparently unsatisfied, he swapped the compress for a fresh one."Doctor, I thought you said he should be awake by now?"It sounded like Chase's voice. I never would have guessed that he was the one taking care of me, and I refused to believe he'd do it out of genuine concern for someone who'd stolen his life of privilege. I forced my eyes open and rasped at him, "Drop the act! You're just here to watch me suffer, so now that you've seen it, quit pretending!"Before Chase could respond, Joanna, who'd been waiting outside, threw the door open and stormed in. "Knox, where are your manners?"I lifted my chin stubbornly and stared at her. "Burning bridges. Isn't that exactly what you taught me, Ms. Cavanagh?"Her small face flushed deep red, and she raised her hand. "Fine. Then, let me teach you that lesson again."Through her overbearing fury, I watched the little sister who once looked up to me like I was her

"Chase!"Even with his solid body cushioning my fall, the impact still left my head spinning. I could barely make out Joanna and Fallon rushing toward me, and nothing made sense. It was Chase? He wasn't supposed to show up for another week. But the body beneath me felt too real to be imagined."Hey, don't tell me you're going to pass out on me."Chase's bright voice rang in my ear, and I snapped fully awake. It really was him, the same person who'd vanished off the face of the earth three months ago.Joanna and Fallon heard Chase joking around and assumed I'd landed on him too hard. They yanked me up without any regard for my injuries."What do you think you're doing?" Chase got to his feet in one clean motion and turned on both of them."Is this how you treat a patient?"I wasn't grateful. I let my anger show right in front of him."If you hadn't disappeared, I wouldn't be in this mess. Don't think I owe you anything for this, not a chance."The moment the words left my mout

"I have an idea," Joanna said, stepping forward with my old sheepdog cradled in her arms."Knox, we've been siblings for years. I really didn't want it to come to this."The dog was ancient now, so old that even breathing looked like it took everything he had. But when I was forced out of the Cavanagh residence, he was the only one who chose me, and he stayed by my side through the longest, darkest stretch of my life.I'd left him safe and sound back at my apartment, so why was he here? A sick feeling crept through me."Joanna!"She frowned, and I immediately caught myself."I mean, Ms. Cavanagh. What are you going to do to Nugget? You gave him to me! He hasn't just been with me for ten years. He's been with you for ten, too!"My pleading didn't move her at all."Just tell me what I want to know, and nothing will happen to him."She gave a light tug on the leash, and Nugget whimpered as he was dragged forward, howling in pain."But if you don't, then…"I couldn't tell her an
