Chapter 1

I was still a step too late. By the time my head cleared, the photos had already spread through the guests' phones like wildfire. I stumbled to my feet and searched the crowd in a panic.

"Joanna, I didn't have anyone take those photos."

My sister, Joanna Cavanagh, looked down at where I was gripping her sleeve, wrinkling the fabric, and her brows furrowed slightly.

"Then, who did?" She shook me off without hesitation.

"I can't believe you'd stoop this low just to stay in the family."

I turned to Fallon Montrose, the childhood friend who'd invited me tonight. "Fallon, we grew up together. You believe me, right?"

But the moment she caught my desperate look, she turned her face away.

"Knox, you've gone too far! You drugged me and had someone take those photos. Even if you don't care about your own reputation, don't you owe anything to the family that raised you for over 20 years?"

I let out a bitter laugh and said nothing. Even with a second chance at this, I still couldn't figure out how to prove my innocence when the very people who set me up were standing right there, watching.

"All these years, and you actually thought you were one of us," Joanna said. "If it weren't for your jealous behavior, Chase never would have left home."

My silence only made her angrier.

"You're the one who should have left. I told Mom a long time ago that keeping you around would only cause trouble sooner or later."

The drug's aftereffects surged through me, and my head spun in waves. Every word out of Joanna's mouth cut straight through me until I could barely breathe. My vision blurred, and I collapsed under the weight of everyone's accusations.

"This again?" Fallon scoffed and kicked my face with her foot and then calmly turned to a nearby attendant.

"Splash him awake."

Three cups of cold water later, I still showed no sign of coming to. Fallon grabbed a bowl of hot soup from the table, her patience clearly gone.

"Knox Cavanagh, you're really committed to this act. I'm counting to three, and you'd better come to your senses. Otherwise, I can't promise what this bowl of soup is going to do to your face."

She used to be the girl next door I adored more than anyone. When we were kids, she followed me everywhere, always bringing me whatever treat she got her hands on first.

Once, I pricked my finger on the rose bushes in the yard, and she threw a fit so big she had every thorned plant ripped out by the roots.

But now, all it took was Chase Elwood leaving home for her to pin the blame on me without a second thought, just because he was the real heir, and I was the fake.

"Three, two… Knox, you brought this on yourself."

The count hit one, and Fallon threw the hot soup across my face without a flicker of expression. Joanna flinched and turned away, but she didn't say a word to stop it.

My screams tore through the hall. My face burned like it was on fire, and I thrashed my arms blindly, reaching for anyone who might pull me out of this. But there was no one, not a single person. The only ones who came close did it for a better look at the show.

To my sister, to Fallon, to every trust-fund kid in that room, a confirmed fraud like me was nothing but a joke.

I had to save myself.

"I know where Chase is! I can bring him home!"

The youths stripped us both and put us in the same room to take the photos. Fallon had been listening the entire time and heard every word of their plan. But she didn't speak up.Instead, she actively helped create opportunities for them and quietly destroyed whatever evidence they left behind. The truth landed like a grenade. Murmurs rippled through the crowd, and every head turned toward Joanna and Fallon. Neither of them could hold onto their polished image anymore. Fallon's face in particular had gone so dark it looked like a storm was about to break. She looked up at Chase, searching for some kind of explanation, but he wouldn't even meet her eyes. So, she turned her fury on me instead."This was you. You put Chase up to this, you worthless piece of trash."Looking at the ugliness twisting Fallon's face, it finally clicked. The sweet, gentle childhood friend I'd once known was long gone, replaced by something hollowed out and corroded by greed. The only person who'd ever ea

"Who said you weren't invited? I'm the guest of honor. If I personally invite you, that should be good enough," Chase said.He had a point, but I still couldn't shake the worry. I had a feeling that whatever he was planning was going to cause a catastrophe, and I was starting to get cold feet."Maybe we should think of another way. If you ruin the Cavanaghs' banquet, it won't matter that you're their biological son. They won't let it slide."Chase waved it off and told me I was overthinking it. I couldn't argue him down, so I put on the suit and headed to the banquet with my nerves on edge."Sir, this is a private event. May I see your invitation?""The guest of honor invited me personally. I don't have one.""I'm sorry, but no one is admitted without an invitation."This wasn't what we'd agreed on. I'd planned to walk in alongside Chase so it wouldn't matter whether I had an invitation or not. But I'd waited and waited at the hospital, and he never showed. As the onlookers gat

"And I'm a consciousness from another world that crossed over into this body. I'm bound to a system that's designed to save cannon fodder, which means I have to save you. Otherwise, I'll never get back home."Chase let out a long breath. "God, it feels so much better to finally say it out loud."He gave my hand a squeeze, the same one I'd been gripping tightly, and grinned at me."Blown your mind, right?" He waved his hand in front of my face a couple times. "Hello? Come back to me.""Is all of that true?" I stared at him, wide-eyed. He had to be lying. If what he said was real, then why did he watch me die such an unjust death in my last life?"Every word. If I'm lying about any of this, may lightning strike me dead and may I never find my way home.""What are you doing?" I yanked his swearing hand down."You can't just go around making oaths like that. What if they actually come true?"He shrugged it off without a care. "See? Now you believe me."Looking into his bright, ear

He pressed his hand gently against my forehead to check my temperature. Apparently unsatisfied, he swapped the compress for a fresh one."Doctor, I thought you said he should be awake by now?"It sounded like Chase's voice. I never would have guessed that he was the one taking care of me, and I refused to believe he'd do it out of genuine concern for someone who'd stolen his life of privilege. I forced my eyes open and rasped at him, "Drop the act! You're just here to watch me suffer, so now that you've seen it, quit pretending!"Before Chase could respond, Joanna, who'd been waiting outside, threw the door open and stormed in. "Knox, where are your manners?"I lifted my chin stubbornly and stared at her. "Burning bridges. Isn't that exactly what you taught me, Ms. Cavanagh?"Her small face flushed deep red, and she raised her hand. "Fine. Then, let me teach you that lesson again."Through her overbearing fury, I watched the little sister who once looked up to me like I was her

"Chase!"Even with his solid body cushioning my fall, the impact still left my head spinning. I could barely make out Joanna and Fallon rushing toward me, and nothing made sense. It was Chase? He wasn't supposed to show up for another week. But the body beneath me felt too real to be imagined."Hey, don't tell me you're going to pass out on me."Chase's bright voice rang in my ear, and I snapped fully awake. It really was him, the same person who'd vanished off the face of the earth three months ago.Joanna and Fallon heard Chase joking around and assumed I'd landed on him too hard. They yanked me up without any regard for my injuries."What do you think you're doing?" Chase got to his feet in one clean motion and turned on both of them."Is this how you treat a patient?"I wasn't grateful. I let my anger show right in front of him."If you hadn't disappeared, I wouldn't be in this mess. Don't think I owe you anything for this, not a chance."The moment the words left my mout

"I have an idea," Joanna said, stepping forward with my old sheepdog cradled in her arms."Knox, we've been siblings for years. I really didn't want it to come to this."The dog was ancient now, so old that even breathing looked like it took everything he had. But when I was forced out of the Cavanagh residence, he was the only one who chose me, and he stayed by my side through the longest, darkest stretch of my life.I'd left him safe and sound back at my apartment, so why was he here? A sick feeling crept through me."Joanna!"She frowned, and I immediately caught myself."I mean, Ms. Cavanagh. What are you going to do to Nugget? You gave him to me! He hasn't just been with me for ten years. He's been with you for ten, too!"My pleading didn't move her at all."Just tell me what I want to know, and nothing will happen to him."She gave a light tug on the leash, and Nugget whimpered as he was dragged forward, howling in pain."But if you don't, then…"I couldn't tell her an
