Chapter 1

Author: Green Fur
I was about to ask who she was when I realized she had already blocked me.

I assumed it was a prank or some lunatic chasing attention, so I ignored it.

To attend my son's engagement party, I made a special trip to Saks Fifth Avenue to buy a suitable evening dress.

I had just picked out a custom long gown.

Before I could ask the sales assistant to take it down, a hand with glittering rhinestone nails reached over and snatched the dress away. "I'll take this one. Wrap it up for me."

I turned toward the speaker. A young woman dressed in the latest couture collection and carrying a designer bag stared at me with open disdain.

She looked me up and down, then suddenly reacted as if she had discovered something shocking. Pointing at me, she screamed, "It's you!?"

"You know me?" I asked with a frown.

She let out a cold laugh, pulled out her phone, opened a screenshot, and shoved it in my face. "What are you pretending for? You were the one who secretly took photos of the dowry my fiancé prepared for me and posted them online to show off, right? I wasn't even finished cursing you out online, and now you've got the nerve to show up in front of me?"

The post on her phone was mine.

So she was the one who had sent me those insulting messages. She was also my son's fiancée, Scarlett Harper.

Before I could speak, she raised her voice and shouted toward the store entrance. "Everyone, come take a look! This is what a mistress looks like these days. Completely shameless!

"She secretly took photos of the 700,000-dollar dowry my fiancé, Nathaniel Cole, prepared for me, claimed it was for her, and posted them online while pretending to be some socialite!

"Why don't you take a look at yourself? You're already so old, and you're still trying to seduce a rich young man. It's disgusting!"

Her voice rang so loudly that my ears hurt just standing beside her.

Suddenly, I remembered how Nathaniel had looked during our video call the night before. His face had been full of joy, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Mom, Scarlett is a gentle and kind woman. She even feeds stray cats on the street. She never raises her voice, and she's very sensible. You'll definitely like her when you meet her," he had claimed.

Then I looked at the woman in front of me, practically spitting as she spoke and looking down on everyone around her. I simply couldn't connect her to the words gentle and kind.

In the short time she had been shouting, a crowd had already gathered outside the store.

Many people who did not know the truth quickly took her side and began pointing at me.

"She's still doing this kind of thing at her age. She has no shame at all."

"She looks like a professional mistress. She's made a career out of being the other woman!"

"What is that guy thinking? Leaving a young, pretty girlfriend for someone old enough to be his mother?"

"Maybe this old woman has some special skills in bed. Hahaha..."

Their words were vicious, and fury burned inside me.

But the woman standing in front of me was still my son's fiancée, and she had clearly misunderstood the situation.

I forced myself to remain calm and tried to explain. "Your name is Scarlett, right?"

"Oh, so you even looked up my name." She shot me an arrogant glance. "You think posting something online can force your way into our lives? Keep dreaming. A piece of trash like you isn't even worthy of carrying my shoes. You're only fit to crawl under a bridge and find a homeless man!"

Her filthy insults came one after another, each one testing the limits of my patience.

I genuinely began to wonder if there had been some kind of mistake. How could this possibly be the girl Nathaniel had described?

I took a deep breath, suppressed the anger rising in my chest, and spoke coldly. "Listen carefully. I'm not a mistress. I'm Nathaniel's mother. In other words, I'm the biological mother of the fiancé you're talking about."

The car ride remained completely silent. After a long while, Nathaniel finally spoke, his voice thick with emotion. "Mom… am I useless? I almost got you hurt, and I almost dragged the company down with me."I turned to look at my son, who still carried traces of boyish innocence.Although his earlier behavior had disappointed me beyond words, what he did today at least showed a sense of responsibility as a man."Whether you're useless or not, decide after you see this." I took a tablet from my bag, unlocked it, and handed it to him.Two sets of files filled the screen. One contained the complete surveillance footage from the luxury store that day, clearly showing Scarlett humiliating and attacking me. The other contained background information George had uncovered that morning. The report showed that during college, Scarlett had moved through circles of wealthy heirs, specifically targeting rich men. She had even attended so-called socialite training programs. During her relation

Her crying and screaming drew a crowd of so-called passersby and influencers, all holding cameras.Flashes erupted nonstop. Cameras clicked one after another. Some people had already started livestreaming on their phones."Everyone, big drama! Ms. Foster from the Titan Group is publicly insulting her in-laws. Confirmed gold-digger behavior!"I watched the scene with cold detachment. So this had all been planned in advance. They wanted to use public opinion to force me into submission. Unfortunately for them, they had chosen the wrong target.Just then, Nathaniel came running over, breathing hard."Dad! Mom! What are you doing?" He pushed through the crowd and stepped in front of me, his face tense with anxiety. "Can we talk about this privately? Do we really have to make things this ugly? There are reporters everywhere, right outside the company!"Scarlett grabbed Nathaniel's hand and burst into tears."Nathaniel, your mom insists on breaking us apart. My parents have no choice

After Nathaniel left, I immediately called George. "Notify finance. Suspend all black cards and supplementary cards under Nathaniel's name. Freeze his trust fund. Leave him only a salary card with a monthly limit of 300 dollars.""Miss Foster, 300 dollars?" George's eyes widened in shock. "In Briarwood, where rent alone is outrageous, 300 dollars can barely cover anything…""Didn't he believe in true love?" I let out a cold laugh. "Then let him see what happens when he has no money. Let's see whether his 'gentle and kind' fiancée is still willing to ride buses and eat street food with him."…For the next two weeks, I completely cut off contact with Nathaniel. The meeting between our families that had originally been scheduled for the end of the month was naturally canceled. Still, I had George monitor their movements at all times.I heard that Nathaniel had moved out of the villa and into a small rented apartment with Scarlett. At first, their relationship remained sweet. The air seemed to freeze in that instant.Scarlett's mouth fell open, but the curses that had risen to her lips died in her throat. "Mom… Mom?"The two sales associates who had acted so arrogantly moments earlier turned deathly pale, as if they wanted nothing more than to dig a hole and disappear into it.The people holding up their phones awkwardly lowered them and exchanged uneasy glances.Nathaniel removed his jacket and gently draped it over my shoulders, wrapping it tightly around me."Mom, I'm sorry. I'm late." His voice was thick with guilt and self-reproach.The moment he spoke, all color drained from Scarlett's face.Realizing what had happened, she scrambled to my feet on her hands and knees and grabbed at the hem of my pants. "Oh my, this is all just a misunderstanding between family! Ma'am… no, Mom! Look, it's all a huge misunderstanding!"I really didn't know it was you! If I had known, I wouldn't have dared even if I had a hundred lives! I was just too worried abo

The moment Scarlett clearly saw the person outside the door, her face lit up with wild joy."Quick! Open the door! Open it!" she shouted at the sales associates before rushing forward like a butterfly. "Honey! You're finally here! If you hadn't come soon, I would've been bullied to death! This old woman not only stole my things, but she even hit me! Look at my face. It's swollen..."Pouting pitifully, she tried to throw herself into Nathaniel's arms. But he did not even look at her. He ran straight toward me.The moment he saw my swollen cheek and the blood at the corner of my mouth, his heart seemed to shatter. His hands trembled as he reached toward me, too afraid to touch me in case he hurt me further."W-Who did this? Who did this to you?" he stammered.Scarlett had only just steadied herself after missing her target. When she saw this scene, her face twisted with rage."Nathaniel! What do you mean?" she screamed as she rushed over and grabbed his arm. "You're standing right

I looked down at my wrist and checked the time. There was an important international video conference that afternoon, one that would shape the next five-year strategic plan for my company, the Titan Group. I could not waste any more time on this idiot."Since you don't believe me, wait until Nathaniel gets here and let him explain it himself. I have business to handle. I don't have time to play along with this drama." I picked up my bag and turned to leave."Stop!" Scarlett screamed. "You hit me and think you can run? Dream on!"She shot a look at the two sales associates. They immediately rushed to the entrance and blocked my path with their arms spread wide. "Ma'am, you can't leave until this is resolved.""Move." I looked at them coldly. "This is unlawful detention. I have urgent work to handle. If you delay my business, you won't be able to afford the consequences.""Oh, work?" Scarlett walked over with a sarcastic laugh. "Off to your next affair? I think you're just guilty a
