Chapter 15: Leap Into the Unknown

“I am thirsty,” I said, trying to keep my tone casual despite the violent pounding inside my chest. “And I want my original clothes back. There is something important left there. Can you get them for me?”

The two maids exchanged another glance. Their hesitation was obvious. They were clearly uncertain whether granting my request was worth the risk of leaving me unattended even for a short while. Reign had trained everyone in this place too well. No one moved without first measuring whether I could become a problem.

A sharp gust of wind swept across the terrace and struck my bare legs, sending cold crawling upward through my skin. I wrapped my arms around myself and glanced down at my knees, which had already turned pinkish from the night air. The chiffon dress clinging to me was too thin, too delicate, and far too inconvenient for what I was trying to do. I should have changed into something practical. I should have prepared while there was still daylight. But regret would not create another opportunity, and if I failed to act tonight, I had no certainty that Reign would leave me this much breathing room again.

After several moments, the maid on the left finally answered, “We can get those for you, Miss, but you will need to wait inside.”

I furrowed my brows. “Why?”

“To ensure that you do not attempt anything.”

I gave a short sarcastic laugh and unfolded my arms. “Attempt what? Escape? From this height? I do not even know where I am, and unless you think I suddenly grew wings, I doubt I can go very far.”

Neither of them reacted. They simply maintained their bowed heads, composed and annoyingly unreadable.

I could feel irritation building hotter inside me. Even without being physically present, Reign still seemed to control every direction I turned. Every servant watched me with the same caution. Every request passed through the same invisible approval of his authority. I hated how thoroughly trapped he had made me feel.

My sister’s face flashed across my mind, and the anger instantly sharpened into urgency. By now she had to be worried sick. She might be searching every place she knew, waiting by the door, refusing to eat, crying herself into exhaustion. I had spent years making sure she never felt abandoned in this world, and the thought of her being left alone while I remained imprisoned here made my throat tighten painfully.

The maid on the right spoke this time. “Please wait here, Miss. We will call someone to watch over you while we retrieve what you asked for.”

I lowered my eyes and forced my expression to remain neutral. That was enough. Whether they called someone or not, they still had to leave this terrace first, and even a few seconds without them directly beside me could be enough if I moved fast.

I gave them a silent nod.

Both maids bowed and turned around before walking quickly through the glass doors. The moment their footsteps faded deeper into the hall, every muscle in my body moved on instinct.

I ran.

The grass beneath my shoes bent under the force of my steps as I rushed straight for the railing. My hands caught the cold iron, and without allowing fear enough time to argue, I climbed. One foot pressed against the lower support, then the other, and within moments I had hauled myself high enough that my body was balancing dangerously above the dark drop beyond the terrace.

My breathing turned rough.

I looked over my shoulder once and found the terrace empty.

No voices.

No maids.

No one.

When I turned back toward the darkness below, the wind hit my face harder. Strands of hair whipped across my eyes, and my fingers tightened painfully around the iron. Beneath me stretched a black uncertain depth interrupted only by the vague shapes of treetops and pieces of lower stone structures. My whole body had begun trembling. The height was worse from here. It no longer looked like an idea. It looked like death waiting patiently below.

I swallowed and forced air into my lungs.

If I stayed, Reign would return.

If Reign returned, every possible path would close.

And if I lost this one chance, I would have to live with the knowledge that I had stood at freedom’s edge and chosen fear instead.

That was unacceptable.

I shut my eyes briefly, pictured my sister’s face, then opened them again and let go.

The world dropped beneath me so fast that I could not even scream at first. Wind slammed into my body as branches whipped across my arms and shoulders. Leaves exploded around me while I crashed through the upper crowns of the trees below. I instinctively reached for anything I could catch, but every branch snapped past my fingers before I could hold it. My stomach lurched violently, my breath tore out of me, and panic surged through every inch of my body as I kept falling.

Then the ground struck.

My feet hit first, and pain shot upward with such force that a scream ripped from my throat. The impact sent me tumbling sideways across damp grass and exposed roots until my body finally stopped. For a few seconds I could do nothing but gasp and clutch at the earth beneath me while agony pulsed through both legs.

Tears burned my eyes, but I bit my lip hard enough to stop them from spilling. My palms dug into the grass as I fought to steady my breathing. Everything hurt. My ankles, my knees, my shoulders, even my ribs from the violent collision with branches. Yet beneath all of that pain, one stunned realization slowly surfaced.

I had survived.

A shaky breath escaped me as I pushed myself into a sitting position. I was outside the mansion. Bruised, aching, and possibly injured worse than I could tell yet, but outside. Reign’s terrace was no longer above my head. No servant stood watching me. No double doors enclosed me.

That fragile relief lasted only until faint lights began drifting around me.

I lifted my head and watched dozens of fireflies float between the darkness of the trees, their tiny yellow glow slowly illuminating the surroundings. As more of the forest came into view, the relief inside me thinned into disbelief. Massive trunks surrounded me from every direction, ancient and impossibly wide, their branches stretching so high overhead that the night sky disappeared behind them. Thick roots crawled across the ground like twisted veins, while dense shrubs and layers of fallen leaves filled every visible space. I turned slowly, searching for anything that resembled a path, a road, a fence, or even distant lights from the mansion, but there was nothing except endless woodland and the looming presence of giant sequoias towering over me like silent guards.

My breathing faltered as the full truth settled in. I had succeeded in escaping Reign’s mansion, only to throw myself into the middle of a forest vast enough to lose me before dawn. The realization sat heavily in my chest, and a weak laugh slipped from my lips because the cruelty of it was almost absurd. Every desperate attempt I made to break free seemed determined to push me from one prison into another.

  • Mister Billionaire’s Treasure   Special Chapter: The Night He Put Forever on My Finger

Three years had passed, and somewhere between surgeries, sleepless nights, examinations, clan conflicts, and stolen kisses in kitchens and hallways, life had finally settled into something that felt frighteningly close to peace. Not the kind of peace that came from having no storms, because Reign and I were two people born under storms, but the kind that came from surviving enough disasters together that silence no longer felt temporary.Russiana was healthier now, stronger, with color back in her cheeks and enough energy to argue with me daily. Our home, the one Reign and I built two years ago after endless disagreements over wall paint and furniture, no longer felt like a structure of wood and concrete. It felt lived in. Warm. Full of laughter, arguments, footsteps, and the familiar scent of the man I loved. That evening, after the Nursing Licensure Examination results had been officially released and my name appeared among those who passed, I came home later than usual, exhausted fr

“Where are you?” Reign’s voice came through the phone in a low murmur threaded with unmistakable impatience, the kind that always surfaced whenever he could not immediately account for my whereabouts. I had my mobile trapped between my ear and shoulder because both of my hands were occupied with shopping bags, and I continued walking through the polished aisles of the department store with a smile threatening to betray me. Around me, the world was moving in ordinary rhythm, customers browsing displays, salesladies greeting people with practiced warmth, children tugging at their mothers’ sleeves, but all of it blurred into the background because the man on the other line sounded as though I had vanished for days instead of a few hours.“I’m at a store,” I replied, pretending innocence.“What store?” he asked so quickly that I almost laughed.I paused beside a section filled with beads and craft supplies, lowered my voice, and allowed a little mischief to color my tone. “That information

A week had passed since Russiana’s emergency surgery, and ever since then I had become twice as protective as before.“Oh, stop that, sweety,” I said the moment I saw her pulling notebooks and pencils from her school bag. “You just had surgery last week. Your doctor said you need complete rest for three months.”Russiana puffed her cheeks and looked at me pitifully. “But I want to study, Ruru. I’m getting bored.”I sighed and crouched in front of her so we were eye level. Her complexion was still pale, and the thought of what almost happened inside that bathroom still sent chills through me.I cupped her little face between my hands.“There will be plenty of time to study later, okay? Ruru already talked to your teacher. You are officially on leave for five months.”Her eyes widened. “Five months?”“Yes. Because your health matters more than assignments.” I pinched her nose lightly. “Do you want Ruru to get angry?” She shook her head immediately. “That’s my good girl. Then listen to me

Three days had passed since the night Reign dragged me out of the river and carried me back from death, and in those three days he had transformed into the most impossible version of himself. He refused to let me walk without assistance, refused to let me touch anything remotely heavy, refused to let me skip medicine, and refused, most annoyingly, to let me eat in peace. He was currently standing in front of the freezer with the concentration of a scientist trying to cure a global disease.“Vanilla?” he asked.I shook my head from the bed.He bent lower and searched again. “Strawberry?”“I hate strawberries.”He slowly turned to me, looking personally offended. “Who hates strawberries?”“I do. They taste too cheerful.”A look crossed his face that said he was reconsidering every life decision that led him to loving me. “You are difficult.”“And yet here you are.”He clicked his tongue and pulled out another tub. “Chocolate?”I considered it for dramatic effect. “That one can stay.”He

Reign sank down onto the wet ground without loosening his hold on me, as if even for a second he did not trust the world to keep me safe unless I was inside his arms. He settled with his back against the cold earth and drew me carefully across his lap, one arm wrapped tightly around my waist while the other rose to cradle my face. We were both drenched from the river. Water dripped from his hair onto my cheeks, mingling with my tears, but the only thing I could truly register was the frantic pounding of his heart beneath my ear and the trembling in the fingers touching me.His forehead pressed against mine.“I’m sorry,” he whispered. The words came out broken, not like a simple apology, but like something dragged painfully out of his soul. I kept my eyes closed because I was too weak to open them for long. My hand throbbed, my ribs screamed every time I breathed, and my body still shook from cold and fear, yet despite all that, being in his lap felt like stepping into the only place le

My heart pounded so violently that it felt ready to tear through my ribs, but before I could wrench free, Sharmon’s fist buried itself in my hair and snapped my head backward with such vicious force that a scream ripped out of me. Fire spread across my scalp. My hands flew to her wrist, nails digging desperately into flesh, but the instant I twisted enough to see her face, dread hollowed me out... whatever humanity she once possessed had been burned away. Her eyes shone with a feverish delight that made her look less like a woman and more like something that had crawled out of a nightmare. She bent close enough that I could smell the bitterness on her breath and laughed, shaking with excitement. “I have imagined this over and over,” she whispered. “Your blood, your tears, your face when you finally understand no one is coming to save you. I wanted to hear you scream my name before you die.”She hurled me forward. My face smashed into gravel. My lip split. Before I could drag in enough

The next day, I woke up at noon. Reign and I did a lot yesterday. We walked on the shore, ocean riding, and went to the top of the island. I didn’t know there was a lighthouse here. I was flustered when I remembered how we did these things while holding each other’s hands like a coupl

I remained silent as Reign held my hand. We just got out from the staircase, and now, we are walking between the maids while their heads are bowed. I roamed my eyes on the maids and trying to figure out Thraia, Brielle, and Luna among them.“Where is Thraia? Is she okay?

I woke up because of the stares giving to me from a pair of eyes. I almost lost my breath to look over in the two blue eyes staring at my face; it was Reign. I looked at myself, remembering what had happened last night, and immediately sat up from lying down.Reign was sm
