Uncle? Damien is Ethan’s uncle? How is that even possible? Could my luck get any worse?
Earlier when Ethan had called him uncle, he barely grunted a reply and I could tell they really didn’t get along. Damien just asked me to get into his car. We’ve been driving for about ten minutes now and he hasn’t said a word to me.
His eyes are fixed ahead and a clear frown is on his face as I glance at him for the umpteenth time. He’s clearly upset that I was trying to use him to make Ethan jealous, which I was. I had no intention of accepting his offer.
“If you have something to say, fucking say it,” His cold voice comes, sending a sliver of fear down my spine.
I gulp, trying to still the mess of emotions rushing through my heart. “I’m sorry,” I murmured.
He turns to look at me, his cold and intense gaze makes me cower inside. I’ve never met a man as hot yet cold as him.
“Did you know?” He asks.
Did I know what, that they were related?
“No, I didn’t know you were related. I know all of Ethan’s family but he has never mentioned you,” I reply frantically, staring down at my trembling hands, unable to hold his intense gaze.
“Miss Aria, do not lie to me.”
“I’m not lying, I swear it on my dad’s life…I didn’t know,” My voice is more assertive. “What kind of a person would I be to sleep with Ethan’s uncle? If I had known who you were that night, I never would have followed you.”
He doesn’t reply and I can no longer feel his gaze on me. I scan him through my peripheral vision and he is now looking ahead. This man has a really handsome side profile.
Focus Aria.
He dwells on my words for some seconds and without looking at me again he asks. “What is he to you?”
“He’s my - was my boyfriend. He cheated on me so I broke up with him but he doesn’t seem to get it.”
“So you were trying to use me to make him jealous, that’s why you sent that text?” He turns to look at me and our eyes meet briefly before I look away.
“Not jealous…….I just wanted him to back off,” I replied, guilt gripping my heart. He had me figured out, there’s no way I could lie about it.
“Same thing,” he replies curtly.
Suddenly, his soft palm lands on my face and he slowly tilts my head towards him until our eyes meet. His deep, dark and sexy orbs stare deep into my big, bright and blue ones, almost as if he is looking into my soul.
I can’t lie…..something about this man’s cold gaze makes me feel hot inside, my heart races with a desire I do not understand and I try to turn away but his grip tightens and he locks his lips with mine.
I gasp into his mouth as he sucks on my lip. His hold is rough, primal even, but his kiss is sultry, gentle.
I hate how my heart races and how my core throbs from the pleasure of his kiss. His lips are so soft and tasteful and my body reacts too positively to it.
He slowly lets go of my face and runs his fingers down the corner of my neck, making me shiver with pleasure. Don't tell him I said so, but my neck is one of my most sensitive spots.
His hand traces back up my nape and he grips the back of my head, deepening the kiss. He flicks his tongue against mine and I hold back the moan that almost escapes me as I unconsciously give him my tongue to suck on.
Christ!…that feels so good….
I didn't even realise he had broken the kiss or that my eyes were closed until I heard his voice.
“You can open your eyes now, miss Aria.”
I flutter my eyes open, my face going beet red and I’m unable to look at him, suddenly feeling shy as I rub my index finger on my lip, the effect of his kiss still lingering.
“What- What was that for?” I ask shyly, unable to resist the urge.
“Next time you want to use one man to make another man jealous, that’s how you do it. Not with a silly hug,” He says rather passively.
My lips round into an ‘O’, realisation hitting me. “Okay,” I reply softly. My heart is still racing, even though I don’t want it to.
“Stop the car Dean,” He orders his driver curtly and he pulls the car to a halt.
“Get down,” He turns to me and says coldly.
I almost don’t believe he means it and my eyes widen at him as if asking the question my mouth couldn’t.
“You wasted my time today Miss Aria, I do not appreciate that. Next time you pull this kind of stunt, I won’t be so lenient.”
“There won’t be a next time,” I say under my breath, hating myself for even texting him in the first place. For a moment there, I forgot how much of an asshole he is.
“There better not be,” He replies in that cold tone again as I unlock the door, pushing it open.
Why does he think he should always have the last say? I shut the door and turn towards him, facing him squarely and looking him dead in the eyes.
“You know…for someone who claims they don’t eat the same food twice, you were in a hurry to taste me again, considering how fast you came,” I remarked in an accusatory tone.
He looks at me with shock in his eyes and I can tell he wasn’t expecting that. His lips part but he is unable to say anything and for some reason, I feel……..victorious.
“Out,” He says in a low murderous tone. If looks could kill, the one he has on right now would already have me at the morgue.
I scoff. “Goodbye, Damien Hartwell.”
But as I step out of the car and he drives away, something in my gut tells me I was going to be seeing him again.
Still standing on the side of the road, I pull out my phone and do the only other thing I know that can get me some money, call Steven Black, the owner of Black Out Cafe.
It would still involve me giving a part of me in exchange for money but at least it won’t be my body.
Damien is still standing infront of us. His tall, broad stature fills the entryway and he looks like someone has just slapped him across the face. For a tiny second, the cold, powerful CEO disappears, leaving behind a man who looks completely heart broken while staring at Roberto and i. He looks like a man watching the only thing he cares about being snatched by someone else. He has faint dark circles beneath his eyes, as if he has not slept for days.My heart gives a betraying thud, I almost feel sorry for him but I refuse to let a single emotion show on my face. I keep my eyes completely blank.Roberto, however, does not flinch despite Damien’s death glare. He does not pull his hand back in a panic, nor does he bow his head in respect to the boss. Instead, he takes his sweet time sliding his thumb off my lip, letting his fingers linger against my chin just a second longer than necessary. He does it casually, almost lazily, as if he is intentionally poking Damien.Damien’s chest heav
I book a cab back to Elena’s apartment. For the first time in months, the silence inside my head doesn’t feel heavy. Watching my dad wave goodbye from the driveway, looking happier had done something to me. The truth about my birth mother, Alice, is devastating. The fact that she died bringing me into the world, leaving my father to endure decades of a forced, cold marriage with Diana just to keep me, is a heartbreak I will carry for the rest of my life. But beneath the grief, my heart feels lighter. At least, I am not the daughter of a woman who looks at me like a nuisance. I was born out of real, undeniable love. I have a name given to me by a woman who loved me before she even held me. When I walk through Elena’s front door, She looks up, her face lighting up with excitement. "There she is!" Elena cheers "Tell me everything! Did Becker say your dad is officially off the hook? Is the evidence solid?" "It's more than solid," I say, smiling as I slip off my shoes. "Becker said it’s
I instantly freeze. I know exactly what will come next without him even finishing the story. He does not need to say out loud who he had to marry against his will.Diana.The woman whom I have been calling my mother all my life. The woman whose attitude towards me I have been trying to justify for years. The woman with whom I have never been able to be close to, regardless of all my efforts. The blood stops flowing in my veins. Everything looks different now: the DNA test I had found in his office years ago, the distance that existed between my parents, the way Diana always looked at me like there was something about my existence she couldn't make peace with. All of this falls into place. It does not help in any way to know the truth. On the contrary, it makes it harder to bear.“I had to marry Diana,” he repeats, this time in a rough tone. “I was twenty-eight. I thought I could make it all work out.”He sheds a tear. “I was wrong.”I swallow.“Diana was the daughter of one of my fath
The noise in my head gets louder. My heart is beating so loudly that all I can see is my father’s face becoming blurry and dimming at the edges, along with everything else. What am I supposed to do about this? What does it even mean? No, that’s not possible. It’s got to be some kind of joke.“Aria.”My father’s voice cuts through to me right before my legs buckle under me. His hands grab me before I have a chance to fall on the ground.“Aria, look at me.”I lean onto the pillar next to me instead, gasping for breath. “I’m fine.”I’m not. I’m dizzy. Everything seems wrong; my whole life turned upside down by this one sentence.“Your mother isn’t really your mother.”And how am I even supposed to interpret that?“What—” I manage to get out before pulling away from him and grabbing onto the rails for support. Not because I do not love him but because I do not understand anything at the moment, and I need something very solid to hold on to.He freezes, and I see the pain register in his e
As soon as my father pronounces his name, my stomach churns. I try not to let on — I do not want my father to know what this does to me.“Oh.” I attempt a laugh. “Yes, indeed — I guess he said he had something going, but I hadn't realised that he had found something.”I look down at my cell phone. My father holds me close, and a single tear slides down his cheek.“Thank you, Gum Gum,” he says. “You have really been my backbone through all of this madness.”I breathe deeply and hug my father a little tighter than usual. He then addresses Becker and Priscilla.“Thank you both as well.”A small, genuine smile appears on Becker’s face. “It changes everything.” He takes the phone from Priscilla. “It gives us some reason to reconsider the initial conclusions and demand a full forensic study of the transactions.”I open my eyes wide. “That means Dad may be exonerated?”“If the forensic study proves to be true to what these documents say,” Becker says cautiously, “his whole case may just crum
“Something that could prove the innocence of your father.”I feel the air leave my lungs as though it has been forced out. I sit up straighter, making sure not to give away the joy in my voice. “Really?” My breathless voice says.Barrister Becker laughs at the other end, and his laugh itself seems to keep me calm. Whatever he has, it must be good for him to laugh.“No, but not another witness.” A pause. “We have something much better than that.”My heart stops for a beat. “What is it?”“I think it better to explain everything to you in person tomorrow.”“Tomorrow?”“Yes, tomorrow. Come to my house. Your father will be there too.”No second thoughts here. “Sure thing. I’ll be there.”“Okay, and Aria?”“Yes?”“Avoid getting too excited until we go through everything.”I can’t help but grin. “Will do.”“Goodnight.”“Goodnight, Barrister.”The call ends, and I am still looking at my phone for several moments before placing it slowly back in my lap.Elena lets out a scream on my side of th
