Chapter 2

Author: Petey Parkin
It was an unlucky day for me. I was bumping into everyone I didn't wish to meet.

Simon wore a neat white coat, with an attending physician's badge pinned to his chest. He looked much more mature than he had two years ago.

I lowered my head and turned to the side, trying to slip away. "Excuse me, I'm looking for Dr. Horton."

Simon pressed his hand against the doorframe, blocking my path.

"Dr. Horton was urgently reassigned elsewhere. I'm handling his patients for now." He stared at me, his eyes dark and unreadable. "You just vanished without a trace. Amy, I never agreed to the breakup."

I squirmed under his gaze as a wave of guilt washed over me. I replied, "It's over between us, Dr. Litt."

Simon ignored my words, reaching out to pull me into the room. "Let's get the basic check-up done. You look terrible."

With that, he turned to fetch the blood pressure monitor.

I knew him well. He was very stubborn and wouldn't back down until he got his way. If I refused to cooperate, I probably wouldn't be leaving any time soon.

So I gave up resisting and rolled up my sleeve, revealing my arm dotted with needle marks of all sizes, old crisscrossing lash scars, scars from dog bites, and calluses from the years I'd spent surviving alone in the mountains.

Simon froze, his gaze fixed intently on those marks. "How did you get through all those years after you pushed her away? Amy, you sacrificed so much for her. Was it really worth it?"

I tried to cover up those unsightly scars. "It's all in the past now."

With red-rimmed eyes, Simon strapped the blood pressure cuff around my arm. "Has your injury gotten better? Does it hurt anywhere else?"

Suddenly, my stomach churned, and that familiar, wrenching pain washed over me. I turned my head and covered my mouth as I coughed. The cough soon turned into a violent coughing fit, and fresh blood seeped through my fingers.

Simon's expression changed. He dropped whatever he was holding and hurriedly grabbed my shoulders. Then he pulled out a handful of tissues and pressed them into my hands.

"What's going on? Amy, tell me the truth."

I took the tissues and wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth, averting my gaze.

I couldn't hide the truth anymore.

"It's stomach cancer."

Simon went still. The office was so quiet that the only sound was his heavy breathing.

After a long while, he finally spoke in a hoarse voice. "Is that why you left without a word two years ago? Who gave you the right to make that decision for me? Do you really think I'm someone who can't endure hardships with you? I wish you'd relied on me just once. I wish you'd let me face this with you!"

My eyes stung. I remained silent.

When I was first diagnosed, the doctor told me I had less than a year to live. Simon was at a crucial point in his career then, and I didn't want to hold him back. After all, I couldn't even save myself. How could I drag him into the abyss with me?

But I never expected to live for another two years.

Simon took a deep breath and called the inpatient department on the landline. "Arrange a private room for me right now."

I supported myself using the desk and stood up. "I'm not staying here. I don't have the money to pay for it."

Simon turned to look at me, gritting his teeth. "Don't worry about that. If you dare walk out that door today, I'm going to follow you everywhere."

I felt sorry for making Simon shoulder a hopeless mess like me all over again.

But Mom was different. I would rather have her hate me than leave her with even the slightest reason to worry about me.

I reluctantly followed the nurse to my room, and by some strange coincidence, it happened to be directly across from Mom's.

I changed into a hospital gown and lay in bed with an IV drip running.

Not long after, the door opened. Mom walked in, her expression frosty. She had probably heard from the nurse that Simon had personally arranged a room for me and even waived my deposit.

Mom had always been suspicious by nature. She probably assumed I was taking advantage of Simon's compassion to win him over.

"You're quite the schemer, aren't you? You're actually putting on a pitiful act to win over Dr. Litt."

I leaned against the pillow, trying to suppress the bitterness in my chest. "I'm just here for treatment."

Mom stared at me for a few seconds before lowering her voice. "Just a heads-up. Dr. Litt is the man I've chosen for my daughter to marry."

My eyes slowly closed as life ebbed away from my body. The sound of weeping beside me gradually faded into the distance.Just before I plunged into total darkness, I said a silent goodbye to the people I loved.I had died, yet it seemed like I hadn't truly left.My soul seemed to float above the room, watching them all break down in tears.Simon was holding my lifeless body in despair, while Mom had fainted on the spot.I wanted to reach out and hold them, but my hands went right through them.I witnessed my own funeral and saw that my gravestone read, "In Loving Memory of Amy Parker".I sat on my own gravestone, watching them stand in the rain, dressed in black and unwilling to leave. There wasn't much to do after death. The stomach pain was gone, and so was the bitter medicine. I simply sat there every day, watching the sun rise and set.Simon visited me every week with my favorite bellflowers and sat by my grave all day, telling me about the hospital and how many patients

The man was Jeff Parker. He was Mom's older brother, the head of the Parker family, and my uncle.Uncle Jeff walked over to my bed and studied me with a deep, unreadable gaze.I shifted awkwardly, trying to sit up straighter.Uncle Jeff reached out and placed a hand on my shoulder. He gave me a gentle pat, his voice low but firm. "Come home. Everyone's waiting for you."I froze. The Parker family had finally accepted me as one of their own, and I was no longer the bastard child from the mountains. My eyes stung as I looked at him and nodded firmly. "Thank you, Uncle Jeff."Thanks to the breakthrough Dr. Horton and Simon had made, my condition gradually stabilized. Although I would never be truly cured, I had at least been given more time. The sun was bright on the day I was discharged. The Parker family sent a car to pick me up, and Mom never once let go of my hand.I had a room of my own at Parker Manor, and the furniture and decor in it had been arranged to my taste.Six mo

Mom pulled her hand away and wiped my face, carefully cleaning every spot. She said, "Don't move. Let me do it."When she was done, she placed the towel back in the basin, pulled over a chair, and sat down.We sat in silence for a long time. Then Mom suddenly spoke, her voice hoarse. "Amy."I turned to look at her.Mom bent forward, gripping my hand as she broke down in tears. "I'm sorry… I'm so sorry. I was wrong. I've had nightmares about you being beaten every night for the past 18 years. You're my child and the only thing that kept me going through all those years in that hellhole."My heart ached, watching Mom break down like this. I squeezed her hand back with all my strength. "Mom, I've never blamed you. I just want you to be happy. That's all that matters to me."Mom lifted her head and pulled me into a tight hug, burying her face in my shoulder. "I won't let you die, Amy. You have to live. I'll make up for all the years I lost with you."I rested in her arms, soaking

After I started the treatment, it felt as though a knife were constantly twisting inside my stomach. I would often tremble all over from the pain at night, cold sweat soaking through my hospital gown.It was even more unbearable than the beatings I had endured in the mountains.Whenever this happened, Simon would sit by my bedside, rub his hands together to warm them, then place one hand over my stomach. His palm was big and warm, radiating a steady, comforting heat.Simon offered me his other hand and whispered, "Bite me if it hurts."I clenched my teeth and shook my head. I couldn't bear to hurt him.One morning, Rhea followed Mom into my room like a little shadow. She was carrying a bowl of freshly bought soup, and her eyes lit up when she saw me. "Amy, how are you feeling today?"The way she called my name so naturally caught me by surprise. A warm feeling spread through me.I replied, "Much better."Mom sat nearby, quietly watching us with a faint smile.Rhea leaned in.

Two highly qualified nutritionists and three round-the-clock caregivers were assigned to my room. Every meal was weighed down to the gram, with the nutritional content calculated precisely. Whenever I moved, a caregiver would immediately come over to check on me.I wasn't used to people looking after me like this.Back when I lived in the mountains, I had to get my own water from the well.I glanced at the line of caregivers beside my bed and sighed. "Please step out for a bit. I want some alone time."Mom rapidly flipped through some documents on the couch without looking up. "They're professionals. They'll take good care of you."I frowned, and a dull ache stirred in my stomach again.Mom paused, setting down the documents. Then she looked at me with determination. "You need them. I can't risk your condition getting any worse."We stared each other down. One look at the stubborn glint in her eyes told me there was no point in arguing with her.The cramps in my stomach grew wo

Darkness closed in around me. The voices nearby sounded muffled and jumbled, as though I were submerged underwater. Yet amid the commotion, I heard Mom's trembling voice."Amy!"She sounded panicked and terrified, her voice breaking as she called my name.I tried to open my eyes, but my eyelids were unusually heavy.I never thought she'd panic over me like this.Hurried footsteps drew closer.Simon's usual calm and steady voice drifted over, filled with unmistakable urgency. "Move! Get the emergency cart over here! Ms. Parker, please step back. Don't get in the way!"Mom wanted to say something, but Simon cut her off."She has advanced stomach cancer and is bleeding heavily! If you waste even another second, she's going to die!"The hallway fell completely silent.I could feel myself being lifted onto a stretcher as they rushed me down the hallway. Before I completely lost consciousness, I felt strangely at peace. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I died like this.At least, i
