Chapter 3

Author: Petey Parkin
"Stay away from him."

My fingers, curled around the blanket, went stiff. So that was it.

"Okay."

Mom sneered and crossed her arms over her chest. "Who are you putting on that act for? Do you think this will make me pity you and acknowledge you as my daughter?"

I watched the IV fluid drip down the tube, my voice raspy. "I never expected that from you. The moment I pushed you away 18 years ago, I never intended to see you again."

Mom's expression darkened as disgust appeared on her face. "Don't even mention those horrible days to me! If it weren't for that scumbag father of yours, I wouldn't have suffered for so many years. You have his blood running through your veins. Just looking at you disgusts me."

I fell silent, and even my breath slowed down.

She had every right to hate me. If Dad hadn't kept her there, she would have lived a carefree, happy life.

I was the only reminder of her humiliating past.

I lowered my voice. "If you don't want to see me, I…"

"Amy!" Mom was somehow angered by my attitude, and her chest heaved. "Don't put on that holier-than-thou act in front of me! You're obviously here to get money from me. Name your price and get out of here! I don't want to see you around."

I stared blankly at the ceiling.

Even though she was harsh with me, I knew she was trying to give me some money in her own way so I could afford my treatment.

"I don't want your money. I'll leave after a few days."

Mom gave me a long look before storming out and slamming the door shut behind her.

I closed my eyes. A dull ache had started in my stomach again.

That afternoon, a nurse sent me to the treatment room at the end of the hallway to receive my medication.

I slowly made my way back, carrying a plastic bag.

A young woman came toward me. She was dressed in a designer coat and was carrying a limited-edition handbag. She stopped in front of me and gave me a once-over, her eyes filled with undisguised contempt.

"Are you Amy Fraser?"

I halted in my tracks and looked at her. "Who are you?"

She sneered and lifted her chin proudly. "I'm Lori's daughter, Rhea Parker. I'm warning you. Don't even dream of joining our family. Mom will never accept you. She has finally moved on from what happened back then. I won't let you hurt her again!"

Rhea protected Mom like a mother bear protecting a cub, and it stirred a strange ache in my heart. But more than anything, I was relieved.

It was a good thing. Mom now had a daughter who loved her with all her heart. She didn't need a bastard like me anymore.

"Okay," I replied softly and stepped around Rhea, trying to get back to my room.

Rhea thought I was brushing her off and angrily caught up with me, deliberately slamming into me.

The impact sent me crashing to the ground. The plastic bag fell from my grasp, and I cut my hand in the fall.

Rhea looked at my bleeding hand and smiled smugly. "This is what you get for refusing to take a hint. Amy, you need to know your place."

Then she crouched down and leaned in. "Don't try to use your illness to manipulate Mom."

"Rhea, why are you making such a scene?" Mom hurried over, her gaze shifting between us as her brows furrowed.

Rhea was quick to play the victim. She stepped forward, linking her arm through Mom's.

"Mom, I saw her hanging around outside your room. I was worried she was up to no good. I only wanted to ask what she was doing. She lost her balance and fell, but now she's trying to make it look like I pushed her."

Mom didn't respond. She looked down at the back of my bleeding hand, her frown deepening.

I braced myself against the wall and slowly stood up, keeping my head down without saying a word.

I didn't want to put her in a bind.

My silence seemed to embolden Rhea, and she tightened her grip on Mom's arm.

Mom's gaze shifted to the security camera above my head. She immediately shook Rhea's hand off her arm.

"What do you think you're doing, causing a scene like this here? How old are you? Why are you still pulling these childish tricks? Apologize to her."

Rhea's eyes widened. "Mom, I'm your daughter! Why are you defending her?"

Mom's voice hardened, her gaze fixed on my bleeding hand. "I only go by the facts. Tell her you're sorry."

My eyes slowly closed as life ebbed away from my body. The sound of weeping beside me gradually faded into the distance.Just before I plunged into total darkness, I said a silent goodbye to the people I loved.I had died, yet it seemed like I hadn't truly left.My soul seemed to float above the room, watching them all break down in tears.Simon was holding my lifeless body in despair, while Mom had fainted on the spot.I wanted to reach out and hold them, but my hands went right through them.I witnessed my own funeral and saw that my gravestone read, "In Loving Memory of Amy Parker".I sat on my own gravestone, watching them stand in the rain, dressed in black and unwilling to leave. There wasn't much to do after death. The stomach pain was gone, and so was the bitter medicine. I simply sat there every day, watching the sun rise and set.Simon visited me every week with my favorite bellflowers and sat by my grave all day, telling me about the hospital and how many patients

The man was Jeff Parker. He was Mom's older brother, the head of the Parker family, and my uncle.Uncle Jeff walked over to my bed and studied me with a deep, unreadable gaze.I shifted awkwardly, trying to sit up straighter.Uncle Jeff reached out and placed a hand on my shoulder. He gave me a gentle pat, his voice low but firm. "Come home. Everyone's waiting for you."I froze. The Parker family had finally accepted me as one of their own, and I was no longer the bastard child from the mountains. My eyes stung as I looked at him and nodded firmly. "Thank you, Uncle Jeff."Thanks to the breakthrough Dr. Horton and Simon had made, my condition gradually stabilized. Although I would never be truly cured, I had at least been given more time. The sun was bright on the day I was discharged. The Parker family sent a car to pick me up, and Mom never once let go of my hand.I had a room of my own at Parker Manor, and the furniture and decor in it had been arranged to my taste.Six mo

Mom pulled her hand away and wiped my face, carefully cleaning every spot. She said, "Don't move. Let me do it."When she was done, she placed the towel back in the basin, pulled over a chair, and sat down.We sat in silence for a long time. Then Mom suddenly spoke, her voice hoarse. "Amy."I turned to look at her.Mom bent forward, gripping my hand as she broke down in tears. "I'm sorry… I'm so sorry. I was wrong. I've had nightmares about you being beaten every night for the past 18 years. You're my child and the only thing that kept me going through all those years in that hellhole."My heart ached, watching Mom break down like this. I squeezed her hand back with all my strength. "Mom, I've never blamed you. I just want you to be happy. That's all that matters to me."Mom lifted her head and pulled me into a tight hug, burying her face in my shoulder. "I won't let you die, Amy. You have to live. I'll make up for all the years I lost with you."I rested in her arms, soaking

After I started the treatment, it felt as though a knife were constantly twisting inside my stomach. I would often tremble all over from the pain at night, cold sweat soaking through my hospital gown.It was even more unbearable than the beatings I had endured in the mountains.Whenever this happened, Simon would sit by my bedside, rub his hands together to warm them, then place one hand over my stomach. His palm was big and warm, radiating a steady, comforting heat.Simon offered me his other hand and whispered, "Bite me if it hurts."I clenched my teeth and shook my head. I couldn't bear to hurt him.One morning, Rhea followed Mom into my room like a little shadow. She was carrying a bowl of freshly bought soup, and her eyes lit up when she saw me. "Amy, how are you feeling today?"The way she called my name so naturally caught me by surprise. A warm feeling spread through me.I replied, "Much better."Mom sat nearby, quietly watching us with a faint smile.Rhea leaned in.

Two highly qualified nutritionists and three round-the-clock caregivers were assigned to my room. Every meal was weighed down to the gram, with the nutritional content calculated precisely. Whenever I moved, a caregiver would immediately come over to check on me.I wasn't used to people looking after me like this.Back when I lived in the mountains, I had to get my own water from the well.I glanced at the line of caregivers beside my bed and sighed. "Please step out for a bit. I want some alone time."Mom rapidly flipped through some documents on the couch without looking up. "They're professionals. They'll take good care of you."I frowned, and a dull ache stirred in my stomach again.Mom paused, setting down the documents. Then she looked at me with determination. "You need them. I can't risk your condition getting any worse."We stared each other down. One look at the stubborn glint in her eyes told me there was no point in arguing with her.The cramps in my stomach grew wo

Darkness closed in around me. The voices nearby sounded muffled and jumbled, as though I were submerged underwater. Yet amid the commotion, I heard Mom's trembling voice."Amy!"She sounded panicked and terrified, her voice breaking as she called my name.I tried to open my eyes, but my eyelids were unusually heavy.I never thought she'd panic over me like this.Hurried footsteps drew closer.Simon's usual calm and steady voice drifted over, filled with unmistakable urgency. "Move! Get the emergency cart over here! Ms. Parker, please step back. Don't get in the way!"Mom wanted to say something, but Simon cut her off."She has advanced stomach cancer and is bleeding heavily! If you waste even another second, she's going to die!"The hallway fell completely silent.I could feel myself being lifted onto a stretcher as they rushed me down the hallway. Before I completely lost consciousness, I felt strangely at peace. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I died like this.At least, i
