Chapter 2

Author: Cool Husky
I spoke through gritted teeth, "Sir, I'm on a diet."

"You…" The counselor looked at me, frustrated and disappointed.

Finally, he gave a cold snort. "Do whatever you want. If this happens again, I'll report this immediately, and you'll have to take a leave of absence."

With that, the counselor stormed off angrily.

My roommates looked at my pale, expressionless face. They shook their heads and left the infirmary.

The school doctor gazed at me in disdain. "Young people these days! They'll really go to any lengths just to look prettier."

Ignoring him, I got up and left the room.

The blustery December wind bit into me, making me shiver. I pulled out my phone and called Mom again, but the call wouldn't go through at all.

I was still blocked.

Suddenly, a message came in. "Not bad, Susan. How dare you try to pressure me by getting a counselor involved?

"As punishment, I'm going to block you for a while. Once you've reflected on your behavior, I'll unblock you."

Seeing those words, I let out a chuckle.

I couldn't take the hunger anymore. I went to the cafeteria and got some soup and a couple of buns to make do for dinner.

Once I got back to the dorm, I lay on my bed, staring at the last coupon on my phone. All I had left was a three-dollar coupon.

A box of tortillas cost at least five dollars, and bread was at least seven dollars. No matter what I got, it wouldn't last me the rest of the month.

I kept my eyes fixed on the screen until midnight. My hands were trembling from hunger.

Suddenly, my phone slipped from my grip and fell to the floor. When I picked it up, a bright red page flashed on the screen.

"Congratulations! You've won an 880,000-dollar coupon!"

Thinking I was hallucinating, I looked at it again in disbelief. It was really an 880,000-dollar coupon.

I got 880,000 dollars off after spending 890,000 dollars.

My hands kept trembling, but this time it wasn't from hunger. It was excitement.

The next morning, I managed to borrow ten thousand dollars from my friends. I used the money to buy all sorts of expensive luxury items.

After setting up an account on a secondhand marketplace, I listed everything at a higher price.

The luxury goods arrived very quickly. In just three days, I had already flipped all the money.

A million dollars! I had exactly a million dollars in my bank account. I burst into tears when I saw the balance.

I immediately took a hot shower and hurried to the most expensive restaurant near campus. I ordered everything I had ever wanted but could never afford. I didn't stop until I couldn't eat another bite.

Finally, I went back to my dorm, feeling full and satisfied.

Not long after I arrived, my phone started ringing. Mom was calling me.

I hesitated for a moment before answering the call.

On the other end, Mom asked excitedly, "Brat, did you just win the jackpot or something?"

I froze for a moment before denying it at once, "No."

"You're lying! You just ordered ten large plates of meat at a restaurant. It even made local news. Tell me—where did you get the money?

"I looked into the restaurant. It costs 888 dollars per person!"

Oh, no! I got a little too carried away with my meal. I didn't notice there was a camera nearby, and I made no attempt to hide how excited I was about the food.

"My financial aid just came in, so I used the money to pay for my meal. It just so happened that the restaurant was running an eating contest. I only spent 50 dollars there. It wasn't that much."

"Really?" My mom had always been a suspicious woman.

"Really."

"Brat, if I find out you've been lying to me, you'll regret it."

Mom's cold words cut me like a knife. Still, I wouldn't go hungry anymore or worry about food.

In the following days, I threw myself into my studies and even applied to study abroad through my professor. Given my strong academic performance lately, she approved my application.

All I had to do was brush up on my foreign language skills.

One day, I had just gotten back to the dorm when I received a message from Mom, which rarely happened.

"Since you've already received your financial aid, I don't have to give you any more coupons for the rest of the semester. Use your financial aid instead."

I replied, "Got it."

Deep down, I was already planning how to get away from Mom. I just needed one more month. In one month, everything would be finalized.

Still, I didn't expect Mom to realize something was off.

"I don't plan on going home.""You…" Mom lost her temper again. I had no intention of listening any further, so I hung up on her.A few days later, the hospital informed me that she had been discharged. Not long after, she got hold of my number and called me."What do you want?”Over the phone, Mom sounded as domineering as always. "Since you're not coming home, you should at least give me some allowance."I stayed silent for a moment, and Mom grew anxious. "I'm already old enough that you should be financially supporting me."If you don't send me any money, I'll take you to court. I'll just do it again if I don't succeed the first time. Let's see if that bothers you at all.""Fine. I'll send you some money."Now that I had finally given in, Mom couldn't wait to get into it and sent me a text. "You should at least give me 2,000 dollars a month. "The old lady next door gets 1,000 dollars a month in pension. You've been abroad for so long. I'm sure you've made plenty of money b

  • Mom Gave Me Coupons To Survive School   Chapter 7

Ever since I went overseas, I had felt a lot more relaxed. I ate and slept well, and my weight also started going up steadily. Now, it was back in the normal range. Studying was no longer such a struggle too, as I wasn't falling behind in class due to poor nutrition. In the blink of an eye, a year went by. Over the past two semesters, I had gotten A+ grades in all my subjects and won many prizes in project competitions as well. One day, my professor sought me out and asked if I would like to stay in this country after graduation, since many local companies had sent me job offers."Of course." The words slipped out of my mouth without hesitation. As long as I could get away from home, anywhere would be ideal. My professor was slightly taken aback. "Don't you want to think it over?""I've already made up my mind, sir." I had dreamed of this moment for so many days.My professor handed me a form to fill out. I could start my internship at a well-known local company next semester.

A week later, my application to study abroad was finally approved. While I was packing to go abroad, Mom started causing trouble again. She went on the local mediation show and accused me of being a horrible child, saying I wouldn't support her financially and didn't care about her feelings at all. I even left her sobbing at the campus gate until security threw her out. However, people already knew what really happened and didn't buy her little act. They just started mocking her instead."Ma'am, haven't you heard the saying, 'What goes around comes around'? You're getting what you deserve.""As a parent, you failed to fulfill your duty to raise your daughter. Why should she look after you now? I've never seen a parent as ridiculous as you. You actually gave her a bunch of coupons instead of an allowance. You really refuse to spend a single cent on her, don't you?""Serves you right. Now that your daughter can stand on her own two feet, why shouldn't she leave you? I can't believe

  • Mom Gave Me Coupons To Survive School   Chapter 5

I knew Mom wouldn't drop it that easily, but I didn't expect her to just show up with a crew from the local mediation show.My roommates hurried into the dorm. "Bad news, Susan! Your mom's here again. She's at the campus entrance right now. You should go check it out."I didn't even get to class and sprinted to the gate, where I found Mom crying into the camera. "Back in our time, we often went hungry. We didn't have it as good as kids do these days. Susan's my daughter. How could I not love her?"I suppose I didn't show her my love in the right way. If she had told me earlier that those coupons couldn't be used for everything, I would've given her cash instead."But my daughter didn't even say a word. I'm illiterate too. How was I supposed to know?"A mediator began comforting her. As soon as she saw me approach, she grabbed me right away."Hello, Ms. Susan Jaffe. Your mom invited us here to mediate between you two. All she wants for you now is to let go of the past and make u

The crowd around us seemed to be in disbelief. "Is Susan telling the truth? That's wild.""Her mom gives her coupons as allowance? How does anyone live off that?""Why not?" Mom's voice suddenly turned shrill. "She's been using coupons for so long. She's doing fine, isn't she? "Besides, if I hadn't given her those coupons, would she really have gotten lucky and won an 880,000-dollar coupon? She should give me half of her winnings!"It was true. One could survive off coupons alone, but after using them for two years, my weight dropped rapidly. At five feet seven inches, I went from 132 pounds to under 77 pounds. Anyone who saw the drastic change would be horrified. But Mom didn't seem to notice. To her, as long as I wasn't dead, everything was fine. Even now, I wasn't even holding out hope that she would admit she was wrong."I'll never give you the money. Me winning the coupon has nothing to do with you. You want the money? Forget about it!"Seeing that I refused to give in,

  • Mom Gave Me Coupons To Survive School   Chapter 3

Mom gave me a call, saying, "I heard from your professor that you've applied to study abroad. Where did you get the money for that?"Be honest with me. Did you win a high-value coupon or something?""Absolutely not!" I immediately denied it.But Mom refused to let it go. "Stop lying. The platform just posted the winner's username. Doraemon is you, isn't it? Even the profile photo is exactly the same."I was wondering where you got the money. Now I know you've won a prize. Give me the coupon now." Mom's voice was as commanding as ever, and it felt suffocating."I won the prize myself. Why should I give it to you?""I see how it is. You think you can just do whatever you want now, Susan? Do you really think I can't control you just because you're at college?"Just you wait. If you don't hand me the coupon, I…"I didn't want to hear anything else from Mom and ended the call.Soon, I received news from my professor. Thanks to my excellent academic performance, he decided to as
