Chapter 5

Author: Lynn Green
Claire's First-Person POV

The freezing wind rushed into my nostrils and throat as I plummeted toward the river's surface.

Although I was instantly surrounded by the biting cold, I felt a sense of carefreeness that I had never experienced before.

The winds howled next to my ears, chasing away the word "ridicule" that had haunted me for so many years.

The words that I wasn't able to voice out flashed through my mind. "No one's going to ridicule you now, Mom."

I wasn't sure how much time had

  • Mom, They Won't Mock You Anymore   Chapter 8

Mom caressed the photo on the graduation certificate as she spoke. "It's all my fault. I destroyed your pride and stole your happiness."She sat there for a long time. The sun began to sink into the horizon. Its dying rays streamed through the window and bathed Mom and my photo in a golden glow.Mom slowly rose to her feet. She padded over to my desk and picked up my urn, holding it to her chest. She walked over to the window and stared at the lights in the houses in the distance."Let's go stargazing, Claire. That was your favorite thing to do in the world when you were a child."That night, Mom cradled my urn as she sat by the window and looked up at the starry sky, softly humming the lullaby that she used to sing to put me to sleep when I was a child. Many years had passed since I last heard that lullaby. The familiar melody and gentle voice were like a ray of sunshine, warming my cold spirit.…Mom seemed to slowly come to terms with reality from that day on.She began ta

There was a snowstorm on the day of my funeral. The entire town was covered in a thick layer of white. Not many people attended my funeral. Only Aunt Gabriella's family and a few of my relatives showed up.Mom was dressed in black from head to toe. She kneeled before the altar while clutching my photo.I was about ten years old in the photo. My hair was tied up into a ponytail and I was smiling widely. I was holding a lollipop in one of my hands. The photo had been taken a year before Dad passed away. Mom had taken me to the park.It was the happiest photo of me that Mom had. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she looked at the photo. She mumbled, "I'm taking you home with me, Claire. No one will ridicule you ever again. No one will bully you ever again either."Her voice was soft as if she was coaxing a sleeping child.…After the funeral was over, Mom brought my ashes home. She placed the urn on my desk in my room. She would clean my photo every day and place my favorite dishe

  • Mom, They Won't Mock You Anymore   Chapter 6

Mom didn't get angry or try to explain herself when she heard their words. She kept her head lowered and covered her face with her hands. Her shoulders were shuddering slightly. Her biggest fear was being ridiculed. She was terrified of people criticizing her behind her back.At that moment, she became everyone's topic of conversation—the woman who forced her daughter to her death because she cared too much about her reputation. That was probably the worst punishment that she could receive. A heavy blow had been dealt to the thing that she cared about the most.Amanda sat in a corner while clutching the hem of her shirt. Tears streaked down her face.Aunt Gabriella sighed as she sat next to her. She didn't scold her. Instead, she patted her back lightly.I knew that Aunt Gabriella was aware that if Amanda hadn't accused me of stealing, I might not have done something so drastic. However, it was too late now. Even if she scolded Amanda, it wouldn't change the fact that I was dead

I then slowly rose into the air.Amanda was sitting in the snow a short distance away from the bridge, crying her heart out. Her voice was trembling terribly. She kept screaming my name, shouting that she was sorry.I floated over to her and looked at her pale face. Her tears and snot mixed together and made a mess on her face.I wondered if she would be haunted by regret for the rest of her life, just like how I had been trapped by the

I was abandoned in the freezing stairwell. The icy wind howled as it billowed down my collar, making my teeth chatter.Pain throbbed through my arm, the back of my head, and my heart, but it was nothing compared to the discomfort and stress I felt from hearing the word "ridicule".I hammered my fists on the door and screamed my apologies."I've learned my lesson, Mom! I won't do it again! Please let me in! I'll never embarrass you again. I'll never let anyone ridicule you ever again!"Mom didn't say a word.I curled up into a ball in an icy corner and listened to Mom's voice resounding from within the house."I'm so sorry, Gabriella. It's my fault for raising Claire into a greedy person who loves to lie. I'm sorry that she caused such a commotion."Aunt Gabriella immediately replied, "The gifts were with me the entire time. I didn't put them in my bag. Amanda's eyes must have been playing tricks on her. Claire didn't do anything."However, Mom ignored Aunt Gabriella's words. "

Mom rubbed a hand down her face after she was done scolding me. She regained her composure and said, "That's enough. Go to bed. We still have to visit our relatives tomorrow. Don't embarrass yourself anymore. Don't give them a chance to ridicule us."It was that word again.I dropped my head and silently returned to my room.Tears rolled down my cheeks and dripped on the floor. My hands hung by my sides as I rubbed the bloodstains on my palms.I was sick of living like that.…The next day, we dropped by my aunt, Gabriella Hall's home. The living room was packed with people. Some were snacking and chatting while some were playing with the children. The atmosphere was very lively.I curled up in a corner of the couch, not daring to speak or move.I was terrified of hearing that word from Mom again if she thought I was being embarrassing.Soon, Aunt Gabriella began giving out gifts. The room was filled with the sounds of joy and laughter as she handed the gifts to all the ch
