Chapter 10

The line went dead with a click, and a busy tone ensued.

Matthew clutched his phone as color drained from his face.

He had lost Maddie and me, and now even his safety net—his other family—pushed him away.

“No… No way…”

He dialed the number furiously.

This time, the call was quickly connected.

Before Matthew could say anything, Cassandra hysterically tore him a new one.

“Matthew, are you dumb? Can’t you understand the words coming out of my mouth? Stay out of my life! I was only with

The line went dead with a click, and a busy tone ensued. Matthew clutched his phone as color drained from his face. He had lost Maddie and me, and now even his safety net—his other family—pushed him away.“No… No way…” He dialed the number furiously. This time, the call was quickly connected. Before Matthew could say anything, Cassandra hysterically tore him a new one. “Matthew, are you dumb? Can’t you understand the words coming out of my mouth? Stay out of my life! I was only with you because you dressed the part of a rich man. Newsflash. My daughter isn’t even yours. How does it feel to raise someone else’s kid, idiot?” Dumbstruck, Matthew turned his gaze in my direction and at his real daughter, Maddie. With my heart in my throat, I pulled Maddie behind me and opened the door to the car parked by the street. I stuffed her in the back seat and jumped behind the wheel. “Mommy…” Maddie turned white, terrified by the look on Matthew’s face and Cassandra’s shrieking v

  • Mom Turned Suspect   Chapter 9

That wasn’t the end of our troubles. Barely two days later, the doorbell rang violently. I peeked through the peephole. It was Matthew. Standing outside the door, he put on a big smile. “Andrea? Maddie? Open the door! Why are my things thrown out?” I flung the door open. “Matthew, are you deaf or dumb? Didn’t I tell you that it’s over between us?” The smile on Matthew’s face froze. “You!” He stepped forward to squeeze his way in. “Must you be so heartless? We’ve been together for over a decade. Does that mean nothing to you?” “You want to talk about feelings?” I blocked the entrance. “The moment you looked elsewhere, kept that woman and her child on my money, named the child after my daughter, and sent my daughter to be abused just to make them happy, we’re done! You have some nerve to talk about us. Don’t you feel sick?” Matthew was quick to defend himself. “I-I have broken things off with her! Honest to God! I’ve cut ties with her. Sweetheart, give me another cha

Matthew shoved Cassandra hard. “Argh!” She let out a shriek and stumbled back, falling onto her bottom with a lack of grace. The careful polish of her hairstyle was ruined. With the fall leaving her in a daze, Cassandra looked up at Matthew in disbelief. “It’s all your fault! If only you hadn’t whined about getting Maddie enrolled here! If not for your vanity and insistence on keeping up with the Joneses, none of this would’ve happened.” Matthew pointed at the woman on the floor and pushed all the blame on her, his voice reeked of malice. “I was against it from the start. You did this to me.” His betrayal triggered Cassandra. Getting on all fours, Cassandra threw herself at Matthew. “My fault? You’re a heartless monster, Matthew!” She yelled, her voice cracking, “You sure have the nerve to blame me. Didn’t you guarantee that there would be no issues with the enrollment? You didn’t tell me that my Maddie would be taking the spot of your other kid. You lied to me! You’v

Matthew’s brazen remark stunned the crowd. The silence was only broken by his heavy breathing and Cassandra’s daughter’s terrified cries. My gaze shifted from him to Cassandra, who was covered from head to toe in labels. Rage consumed me right there and then. Apparently, life was hard on Cassandra, and Matthew was only doing his bit by lending her a hand. I let out a scoff and cut his spineless rationalizing short. “Matthew, save your sob story, and save your breath for the courtroom. “I’m serving you with divorce papers. You’re not taking a penny out of what’s mine and Maddie’s. I’ll see to it that you get the hell out of my house with nothing to your name.” “D-Divorce? Nothing to my name?” Matthew stared at me in disbelief. Seconds later, he gritted his teeth. “T-That’s not for you to decide! You’re not the judge. You can’t just take everything. Why should you?” “Why?” I watched in amusement as Matthew clutched at straws desperately. “Well, I have proof of your c

Matthew opened his mouth, intent on clearing the air with me. Cassandra gave me the side eye. “Hear that? Matthew is the CEO of a major corporation! Back off if you know what’s good for you! Things will only turn ugly if you don’t leave us alone!” She assumed that Matthew’s job title was enough to intimidate me. Between her mindless arrogance and Matthew’s pathetic wish to disappear, the lingering doubt I had was no more. Why should I be considerate of those without any shred of decency? “You sure have mastered the art of freeloading, Matthew. You’re something else.” I hit him right where it hurt the most. “You used my money to play rich and support another woman and her child. Well, you’re quite the moocher.” The crowd went wild. “What? He’s a freeloader?” “So he’s the kept man?” “Has he been raising another family with his wife’s money?” “Jesus! Talk about drama.” “We nearly called the cops on the actual wife. Turns out…” The bombshell left the crowd reel

  • Mom Turned Suspect   Chapter 5

Matthew was essentially a dependent in my household, seeing that he married into my family’s wealth. In fact, my parents were against the marriage right from the start as Matthew didn’t seem decent. Alas, I was so swept up in the romance to take my parents’ advice. Unable to convince me otherwise, my parents relented, but on one condition. Matthew had to be a stay-at-home husband and father. Over the years, I was the breadwinner while he ran the household. Hence, it was his responsibility to enroll Maddie in an after-school program. It must have been tough for Matthew to play the role of a considerate, devoted husband for so long. Who knew he had the nerve to keep a second family? “Who are you to each other?” Overcome by curiosity, one instructor drew close to ask. I scoffed. Before I could expose his web of lies, Matthew lunged forward and pleaded in a hushed tone, “Sweetheart, can’t we handle this at home?” After a quick side-eye at him, I uttered curtly, “Where’s Mad
