The line went dead with a click, and a busy tone ensued. Matthew clutched his phone as color drained from his face. He had lost Maddie and me, and now even his safety net—his other family—pushed him away.“No… No way…” He dialed the number furiously. This time, the call was quickly connected. Before Matthew could say anything, Cassandra hysterically tore him a new one. “Matthew, are you dumb? Can’t you understand the words coming out of my mouth? Stay out of my life! That wasn’t the end of our troubles. Barely two days later, the doorbell rang violently. I peeked through the peephole. It was Matthew. Standing outside the door, he put on a big smile. “Andrea? Maddie? Open the door! Why are my things thrown out?” I flung the door open. “Matthew, are you deaf or dumb? Matthew shoved Cassandra hard. “Argh!” She let out a shriek and stumbled back, falling onto her bottom with a lack of grace. The careful polish of her hairstyle was ruined. With the fall leaving her in a daze, Cassandra looked up at Matthew in disbelief. “It’s all your fault! If only you hadn’t whined about getting Maddie enrolled here! If not for your vanity and insistence on keeping up with the Joneses, none of this would’ve happened.” Matthew pointed at the woman on the floor and pushed all the blame on her, his voice reeked of malice. “I was against it from the start. Matthew’s brazen remark stunned the crowd. The silence was only broken by his heavy breathing and Cassandra’s daughter’s terrified cries. My gaze shifted from him to Cassandra, who was covered from head to toe in labels. Rage consumed me right there and then. Apparently, life was hard on Cassandra, and Matthew was only doing his bit by lending her a hand. Matthew opened his mouth, intent on clearing the air with me. Cassandra gave me the side eye. “Hear that? Matthew is the CEO of a major corporation! Back off if you know what’s good for you! Things will only turn ugly if you don’t leave us alone!” She assumed that Matthew’s job title was enough to intimidate me. Between her mindless arrogance and Matthew’s pathetic wish to disappear, the lingering doubt I had was no more. Matthew was essentially a dependent in my household, seeing that he married into my family’s wealth. In fact, my parents were against the marriage right from the start as Matthew didn’t seem decent. Alas, I was so swept up in the romance to take my parents’ advice. Unable to convince me otherwise, my parents relented, but on one condition. Matthew had to be a stay-at-home husband and father. Over the years, I was the breadwinner while he ran the household. Hence, it was his responsibility to enroll Maddie in an after-school program.
