Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
"Claire Walker! What gives you the right to freeze your sister's card without asking me?

"Turn it back on right now! She's waiting to pay for something!"

Mom was screaming into the phone, but my voice stayed calm.

"Mom, I earn that money. I decide how it's spent."

She exploded.

"What do you mean, you decide? You've really gotten full of yourself!

"Your money is family money!

"So what if your sister spends some of it? You're the older sister. Of course you're supposed to take care of her!"

I finally raised my voice.

"Mom, I was born two minutes before her!

"Two minutes. That's it. Why does that mean I have to spend my entire life supporting her? Why am I supposed to work myself to death for her?

"There is nothing wrong with her. If she wants money, she can get a job and earn it herself!"

Mom went silent for a moment.

Then she dragged out the same ridiculous story she'd been using against me since childhood.

"You have the nerve to say that? When you were born, you screamed so much that you traumatized your sister!

"Why do you think she couldn't even walk until she was three and everyone called her slow?

"You owe her for that. You'll be responsible for her for the rest of your life!"

Something inside me finally cracked.

My throat tightened as I asked the question I'd swallowed for years.

"Mom... am I actually your daughter?"

There was an awkward laugh on the other end.

"What kind of question is that? Of course you're my daughter.

"You really know how to hurt your mother's feelings.

"I've always treated you and your sister exactly the same. I've never favored either of you."

I laughed, and there was nothing warm in it.

"Exactly the same? No favoritism?

"Mom, do you actually believe that when you say it?"

Silence swallowed both ends of the call.

After a long pause, Mom finally asked carefully, "Did you see the post about the car I bought Chloe?"

I said nothing.

She immediately started making excuses.

"You already have a car to get around in. And you never told me you wanted a new one.

"Is this really worth throwing a tantrum over?

"When you girls were growing up, what did you ever ask for that I didn't give you?"

I waited until she finished.

Then I spoke slowly and clearly.

"Fine. I'm telling you now. I want a new car too. I want it now."

Mom hesitated for a few seconds.

"All right. I'll buy you one.

"Spend the next few days looking at models and colors."

"No need. I want the exact same make, model, and color as Chloe's."

"Fine, I got it. Can you turn your sister's card back on now?"

"Of course."

Then I hung up.

A few minutes later, Chloe texted me.

"Don't be stupid. Mom is never going to buy you that car.

"You'll never be allowed to compete with me in this family. Mom is just stringing you along. Do you get it now?

"So do yourself a favor and turn my card back on.

"If you behave, I might even put in a good word for you with Mom."

The moment I'd heard Mom and Chloe screaming outside my door, I'd called the police.Whatever happened next, I needed to protect myself first. That decision probably saved me.The second the officers restrained Chloe, all the arrogance vanished from her face.Another officer pulled Mom off me.She froze for two seconds, then started fighting against him."What are you doing? I'm her mother!"I have every right to discipline my own daughter! You can't arrest me for that!"The officers weren't interested in her excuses. One of them spoke firmly."You forced your way into another person's home, physically restrained her, and threatened her with a weapon."Those are serious offenses."You're both coming with us."Only then did the panic in my body begin to ease.I pushed myself up from the floor.Mom finally seemed scared."Claire Walker! I'm your mother! You called the police on me?"What kind of daughter does that?"Tell them this is a misunderstanding right now!"I di

As soon as I got home, I started organizing evidence.I pulled years of transactions from the family card Chloe had used on my account.I gathered the payment links for every luxury purchase Mom had asked me to cover. Then I screen-recorded years of messages between me, Mom, and Chloe.I put everything into one video and posted it publicly on my social media accounts. The caption read: STOP LYING ABOUT ME IN THE FAMILY CHAT AND POSTING FLYERS AT MY OFFICE.I tagged both Mom and Chloe and added my city to the post. The algorithm did the rest.It didn't take long before relatives and coworkers started seeing the video.Within an hour, Mom and Chloe were blowing up my phone with calls and messages.I got tired of it and blocked both of them.Things had already gone this far. There was no point pretending we were still a normal family trying to preserve appearances. They still wouldn't stop.About half an hour later, they showed up at my apartment. They pounded on the door so

The screenshot I'd posted in the family chat was a conversation between Chloe and me.It showed her telling me that Mom would never buy me a car, mocking me for believing the promise, and threatening me until I turned her family card back on.Our relatives weren't stupid. They understood what had happened almost immediately. The criticism flipped toward Mom."They're both your daughters. How can you treat them so differently?"Mom cared more about how she looked to other people than she did about almost anything else.Once the family started calling her out, she panicked and bought me the car.Now Grandma was calling because Mom had gone back into the group chat with a new story. She posted the photo of me smiling at the dealership, along with the payment receipt. There was nothing wrong with the photo itself. But paired with Mom's dramatic voice message, my smile suddenly looked smug. She started with the screenshot, breaking off to cough before she'd finished the sentence

At exactly ten the next morning, I walked into the dealership.Mom and Chloe were already waiting in the lobby. They both looked furious. The second Chloe saw me, she glared."I never realized you were this calculating, Claire."You really went through all of this for a car?"Her eyes started filling with tears."Do you know that money was supposed to be the down payment for my house?"Mom immediately pulled her into a hug, then turned on me."You got your car. Are you finally going to turn your sister's card back on?"I ignored both of them and walked straight to the desk.I handed the employee my ID and the paperwork they needed to finish the delivery.I didn't give Mom or Chloe another glance. My indifference made Mom even angrier. She grabbed my arm."I'm talking to you! Did you hear me? Do you not even have basic manners anymore?"Chloe jumped in beside her."Seriously. Stop acting like you're too good for everyone."Take out your phone and turn my card back on a

I read Chloe's messages without feeling much of anything. The next day, Mom texted me."You're sure you want the exact same car as your sister, right?"I'm only double-checking because once I put down the deposit, the dealership won't refund it."And, of course, she added, "By the way, don't forget to turn Chloe's card back on."I replied, "I'm sure. That's the car I want."I'll turn her card back on right away."The exact same conversation repeated itself for days.On the seventh day, Mom finally lost patience."Claire! What is going on with you?"It's been a whole week. How hard can it be to fix one little card?"Compared with her anger, my voice was almost gentle."Mom, it's been a week. Why hasn't the car deposit gone through yet?"When am I supposed to pick up my car?"Whenever the question got inconvenient, Mom suddenly had nothing to say. That afternoon, just as I was leaving work, Grandma called me."Claire, what are you doing? You've been working for years. Why
