Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
I read Chloe's messages without feeling much of anything.

The next day, Mom texted me.

"You're sure you want the exact same car as your sister, right?

"I'm only double-checking because once I put down the deposit, the dealership won't refund it."

And, of course, she added, "By the way, don't forget to turn Chloe's card back on."

I replied, "I'm sure. That's the car I want.

"I'll turn her card back on right away."

The exact same conversation repeated itself for days.

On the seventh day, Mom finally lost patience.

"Claire! What is going on with you?

"It's been a whole week. How hard can it be to fix one little card?"

Compared with her anger, my voice was almost gentle.

"Mom, it's been a week. Why hasn't the car deposit gone through yet?

"When am I supposed to pick up my car?"

Whenever the question got inconvenient, Mom suddenly had nothing to say.

That afternoon, just as I was leaving work, Grandma called me.

"Claire, what are you doing? You've been working for years. Why are you still asking your mother to buy you a car?

"I know Diane isn't always fair to you and Chloe. But she's getting older, and her health isn't good. You should try to be considerate."

My stomach dropped.

"Grandma, did Mom complain about me to you?"

"You haven't checked the family group chat?

"She's been talking about you in there all afternoon. She's still going."

Our extended-family chat had several hundred people in it, so I'd muted it ages ago.

When I opened it, there were hundreds of unread messages.

At the top of the mess was one of Mom's voice notes.

"What did I do to deserve this? I can't live like this anymore!"

Relatives immediately started asking what had happened.

Once Mom had everyone's attention, she posted a huge message telling her version of the story.

According to her, she was old, sick, and barely scraping by.

She supposedly went without decent food and clothes just to save money.

Then, because poor Chloe was working so hard at practicing her driving, Mom had sacrificed everything to buy her a car.

And the moment I found out, I had become jealous and started throwing a fit, demanding a car of my own.

Mom claimed she wanted to treat both daughters equally, but she simply couldn't afford another car right away.

From there, the group chat turned into a public trial of me.

Mom cried about how miserable she was to have such a cold, selfish daughter.

Apparently, it wasn't enough that I'd worked for years without being grateful enough to her.

Now I was supposedly trying to drive my own mother into an early grave because I wouldn't be satisfied until she was dead.

Her final line was the most dramatic of all.

"The doctor said if I get upset again, I might not even have six months left!"

The family chat exploded.

"All that education and Claire still grew up with no conscience. What a waste."

"Exactly. Some children are just ungrateful no matter how much you give them. I feel terrible for you, Diane."

Aunt Rhonda was the loudest.

"Don't let her get to you, Diane. She's not worth making yourself sick over.

"If she's going to bully you, stop protecting her reputation. Put everything she's done online.

"Better yet, print flyers and put them all over the entrance to her office. Let's see how she likes facing her coworkers after that."

A flood of relatives agreed.

I read every insult and accusation without defending myself.

Then I posted a single screenshot in the group chat.

The conversation that had been moving too fast to follow went completely silent.

Mom called immediately.

I declined it.

Then she started texting.

"Claire Walker! Are you insane?

"Delete that right now!

"Are you determined to humiliate this entire family in front of everyone?"

I ignored every message.

Five minutes later, Mom sent me a screenshot of a paid-in-full receipt for the car.

"Fine! You win!

"I paid for the whole thing!

"Go to the dealership at ten tomorrow morning and pick it up!"

The moment I'd heard Mom and Chloe screaming outside my door, I'd called the police.Whatever happened next, I needed to protect myself first. That decision probably saved me.The second the officers restrained Chloe, all the arrogance vanished from her face.Another officer pulled Mom off me.She froze for two seconds, then started fighting against him."What are you doing? I'm her mother!"I have every right to discipline my own daughter! You can't arrest me for that!"The officers weren't interested in her excuses. One of them spoke firmly."You forced your way into another person's home, physically restrained her, and threatened her with a weapon."Those are serious offenses."You're both coming with us."Only then did the panic in my body begin to ease.I pushed myself up from the floor.Mom finally seemed scared."Claire Walker! I'm your mother! You called the police on me?"What kind of daughter does that?"Tell them this is a misunderstanding right now!"I di

As soon as I got home, I started organizing evidence.I pulled years of transactions from the family card Chloe had used on my account.I gathered the payment links for every luxury purchase Mom had asked me to cover. Then I screen-recorded years of messages between me, Mom, and Chloe.I put everything into one video and posted it publicly on my social media accounts. The caption read: STOP LYING ABOUT ME IN THE FAMILY CHAT AND POSTING FLYERS AT MY OFFICE.I tagged both Mom and Chloe and added my city to the post. The algorithm did the rest.It didn't take long before relatives and coworkers started seeing the video.Within an hour, Mom and Chloe were blowing up my phone with calls and messages.I got tired of it and blocked both of them.Things had already gone this far. There was no point pretending we were still a normal family trying to preserve appearances. They still wouldn't stop.About half an hour later, they showed up at my apartment. They pounded on the door so

The screenshot I'd posted in the family chat was a conversation between Chloe and me.It showed her telling me that Mom would never buy me a car, mocking me for believing the promise, and threatening me until I turned her family card back on.Our relatives weren't stupid. They understood what had happened almost immediately. The criticism flipped toward Mom."They're both your daughters. How can you treat them so differently?"Mom cared more about how she looked to other people than she did about almost anything else.Once the family started calling her out, she panicked and bought me the car.Now Grandma was calling because Mom had gone back into the group chat with a new story. She posted the photo of me smiling at the dealership, along with the payment receipt. There was nothing wrong with the photo itself. But paired with Mom's dramatic voice message, my smile suddenly looked smug. She started with the screenshot, breaking off to cough before she'd finished the sentence

At exactly ten the next morning, I walked into the dealership.Mom and Chloe were already waiting in the lobby. They both looked furious. The second Chloe saw me, she glared."I never realized you were this calculating, Claire."You really went through all of this for a car?"Her eyes started filling with tears."Do you know that money was supposed to be the down payment for my house?"Mom immediately pulled her into a hug, then turned on me."You got your car. Are you finally going to turn your sister's card back on?"I ignored both of them and walked straight to the desk.I handed the employee my ID and the paperwork they needed to finish the delivery.I didn't give Mom or Chloe another glance. My indifference made Mom even angrier. She grabbed my arm."I'm talking to you! Did you hear me? Do you not even have basic manners anymore?"Chloe jumped in beside her."Seriously. Stop acting like you're too good for everyone."Take out your phone and turn my card back on a

"Claire Walker! What gives you the right to freeze your sister's card without asking me?"Turn it back on right now! She's waiting to pay for something!"Mom was screaming into the phone, but my voice stayed calm."Mom, I earn that money. I decide how it's spent."She exploded."What do you mean, you decide? You've really gotten full of yourself!"Your money is family money!"So what if your sister spends some of it? You're the older sister. Of course you're supposed to take care of her!"I finally raised my voice."Mom, I was born two minutes before her!"Two minutes. That's it. Why does that mean I have to spend my entire life supporting her? Why am I supposed to work myself to death for her?"There is nothing wrong with her. If she wants money, she can get a job and earn it herself!"Mom went silent for a moment. Then she dragged out the same ridiculous story she'd been using against me since childhood."You have the nerve to say that? When you were born, you screamed
