Chapter 10

Author: Big River
Two years later, I bought an apartment. It wasn't big—just a two-bedroom place.

The living room faced south, and the kitchen was bright and sunny.

I made sure to set aside a room for Grandpa. The window nook got plenty of sunshine, and he could grow flowers, drink tea, and take afternoon naps there.

The day we received the deed, Grandpa sat on the couch, holding the folder in his hands. He stared at it for a long time.

"Malcolm, we really have a home now?"

I crouched down in front of him. "

Two years later, I bought an apartment. It wasn't big—just a two-bedroom place. The living room faced south, and the kitchen was bright and sunny.I made sure to set aside a room for Grandpa. The window nook got plenty of sunshine, and he could grow flowers, drink tea, and take afternoon naps there. The day we received the deed, Grandpa sat on the couch, holding the folder in his hands. He stared at it for a long time."Malcolm, we really have a home now?"I crouched down in front of him. "Yeah. We don't need anyone's approval to live here anymore. We can stay here for as long as we want."Grandpa smiled and nodded. "Good. That's good."…Mom showed up on moving day. She stood outside the door holding a fruit basket.I hadn't seen her in years, and she had aged a lot. Her back was slightly hunched, and deep wrinkles lined the corners of her eyes.I opened the door but didn't invite her in.She peered inside the apartment. There was a new couch, a new dining table, and Grandp

After graduation, I got a job at a company. When my first paycheck came in, I went back to town to pick up Grandpa. He, however, kept insisting he didn't want to go with me. "I'm old. I'll just be a burden if I go to the city and live with you."I took his worn-out bag from him. "Grandpa, you're not a burden. You're my family."He froze for a long moment when he heard the word "family". Then he looked down and wiped his eyes.I'd rented a two-bedroom apartment in the city. It wasn't huge, but it faced south and got plenty of sunlight. The first time Grandpa set foot inside, he stood at the doorway, afraid to take another step."The floor is so shiny. Won't I get it dirty?"I brought him a pair of slippers. "If it gets dirty, I'll just mop it."He ran his hands over the couch, the curtains, and the new pots in the kitchen. Finally, he said, "This pot is nice. I'll use it to make you some stew.""Okay," I said with a smile.…Life gradually settled into a comfortable routine.

On Grandpa's birthday, several neighbors in town insisted on throwing him a little birthday dinner. He refused at first. "What's an old man like me need a birthday party for? It's a waste of money."The old neighborhood community director chuckled. "Earl, your grandson won a National Scholarship, and he's such a good grandson, too. We're all happy for you, so let's have a little celebration."A few tables were set up in the yard, covered with simple homemade dishes. We didn't go to a restaurant or hang up any banners, but there was hot soup, stewed chicken, and a big birthday cake baked by one of the neighbors.Grandpa wore the new padded jacket I'd bought him and sat at the head of the table, looking so flustered that he didn't even know what to do with his hands.I placed some food on his plate. "Grandpa, you're the guest of honor today."He smiled and patted the back of my hand. "Keep your voice down. You're embarrassing me."Halfway through the meal, a car pulled up outside.

During the second semester of my third year, I won the National Scholarship.Greg asked me to speak as the student representative.Standing on the stage, I looked down at row after row of young faces. In the past, I used to be terrified of people finding out I was poor, of them knowing my living expenses required an approval process, and of them finding out that even buying stomach medicine required an explanation. Now, as I set my speech on the podium, I said only a few words."I used to think that being poor was a shameful thing. Only later did I realize that what truly kept my head hung low wasn't poverty. It was having someone turn the support they were supposed to give to their child into one interrogation after another."The crowd went silent for a few seconds. Then, applause broke out.I never mentioned Mom, but with every word, I felt like I was helping my past self lift his head higher, bit by bit. When the college's official social media page posted a video of me on st

Mom thought I wouldn't be able to last long. At the end of the month, she texted me, "Text me back if you're out of money. Don't cling to your pride."I didn't text her back.I went to classes during the day and worked shifts at the library at night. And on the weekends, I tutored middle school students.Once my student loan and financial aid came through, the first thing I did was pay back my roommate. With what was left, I bought a pair of knee braces and mailed them to Grandpa. When he received them, he took a photo and sent it to me. He was sitting in his yard with his pant legs rolled up, the knee braces fitted neatly in place. He was grinning so widely his eyes almost disappeared. The caption read, "My grandson bought these for me. They're so warm."I saved the photo and looked at it over and over again.I felt a sense of peace I'd never felt back when I used to rely on an allowance. For the first time, I didn't have to ask myself after every meal whether I'd spent too mu

Mom sent an entire screenful of angry texts into the family group chat."Malcolm, you removed me as your emergency contact? What's the meaning of this? I just told you off a few times, and now you're disowning your own mother?"Michele sent a voice message. "Mom, don't give him any more money. Isn't he capable of applying for student loans? Just let him take one out."Mikey sent a link. It was a video he'd posted on his alternate account. The title read, "My brother's college expense report. I'm dying of laughter!"The thumbnail was a picture of my expense report."Coffee: 3 dollars."That was circled in red."Stomach medicine: 6 dollars and 50 cents—Frequency too high."Toilet paper: 6 dollars and 90 cents—Excessive quantity."Someone in the comments section asked, "Is this your actual brother?"Mikey replied, "Yeah. That's why my mom keeps such a close eye on him. Otherwise, who would bother?"I felt a chill sweep over my body as I stared at that line. I gave him a call.
