Chapter 1

One day, when my brother, Cameron Joyner, and I went out to play, I fainted when I accidentally slipped and fell on the staircase. He was gone by the time I groggily regained consciousness.

My heart immediately began to race. I yelled his name at the top of my lungs. "Cam! Where are you, Cam? Don't scare me!"

My surroundings were pitch-black, and a blood-red moon hung in the sky. It was completely silent.

Fear gripped my heart. Cameron was only four. I couldn't help but wonder if a human trafficker abducted him when I was unconscious.

I became more and more panicked. Pressing one hand to my dizzy head, I hastily ran back home. The door was tightly locked. I had lost my key, so I had no choice but to hammer my fists on the door.

"Who is it?" Mom asked from beyond the door.

"It's me, Mom. It's Cassie," I replied loudly.

However, Mom only opened the peephole. She peered at me with bloodshot eyes before she asked, "Is it really you, Cassie?"

"It's me, Mom," I said.

Mom immediately opened the door after she heard my answer. However, she slapped me hard across the face before I could even tell her that Cameron had gone missing. Her bloodshot eyes were burning with hatred.

"It's all your fault, Cassie!" she snapped. "Cam wouldn't have gone missing if it weren't for you!"

It felt as if an explosion had been set off in my head. My mouth fell open, but I couldn't say a single word.

Mom was right. I was responsible for Cameron's disappearance.

In the end, I did everything that I could to hold back my tears and explain myself. "I fainted after I slipped on the stairs, Mom. Cam was already gone when I woke up. I immediately came to look for you.

"Let's look for Cam together. I really didn't lose him on purpose."

Mom slapped me again, then grabbed a fistful of my hair and dragged me toward the living room.

An enlarged portrait of Cameron had been placed in the middle of the living room, along with his favorite toys.

Mom pressed my head down and snapped, "You don't need to look for him. I want you to kneel here for seven days and seven nights to atone for your sins. Grovel for his forgiveness as you kneel. Don't blame me for taking drastic measures if you refuse."

She slapped me a few more times, making me see stars.

Mom was probably furious with me because Cameron had gone missing on my watch. In the past, she tolerated everything that I did and was the perfect example of a mother who adored her daughter.

I believed that she would return to the sweet and doting mother that I knew as long as I found Cameron.

When midnight rolled around, I was still kneeling in the living room. I felt a little tired and wanted to sleep.

Suddenly, a gust of wind billowed in through the window, bringing a strange scent with it.

Driven by an inexplicable force, I quietly rose to my feet and walked over to the window to look outside. When I looked down, I stared directly into Cameron's eyes that had turned white.

Cameron, who was supposed to be missing, was quietly lying on my third-floor neighbor's balcony. His body was twisted in odd angles as he lay there, and his face had taken on a purplish hue.

My voice was shaking when I called out to him. "Cam?"

When I didn't get a response, I crumpled onto the floor.

Cameron didn't go missing at all. He was already dead.

The neighbors called the police a week later, as a foul stench was coming from Unit 1801. They were completely ignored when they tried knocking on the door. The crowd was shocked when the police forced the door open.Mom was sitting in the living room in a daze, looking filthy and disheveled. Her hands had already rotted and were crawling with maggots. She kneeled in front of my corpse as she mumbled to herself.Everyone had to move closer to her to hear what she was saying."I'm sorry. I made a mistake. I shouldn't have forced you to kneel for seven days and seven nights. I'll make it up to you right now. I'll kneel for seven days and seven nights too. Can you visit me again, Cassie? I miss you so much…"Mom's lips were peeling and bloodless. She was thin and frail, and her cheeks were so sunken that she looked as if she were just skin and bones. The police swallowed and asked, "Are you alright, ma'am?"Mom didn't move a muscle or respond. She just kept repeating the same words

When Mom refused to believe him, Mr. Wellstone sighed and pointed at my corpse, saying, "Logically speaking, your daughter's corpse should have vanished when her soul scattered. Look at it. It's still here. On top of that, the livor mortis stopped spreading. That's because she became a vengeful spirit."He asked Mom to bring him a pail of water when she still didn't believe him. "You'll understand what I'm talking about after you watch this."Mr. Wellstone dropped a burning talisman into the water. A scene slowly appeared in the water after the talisman burned to ashes. In the scene, Mom was reminding me to take good care of Cameron.Mom stared unblinkingly at the water as she stood to the side. She watched as I played with Cameron after she left and saw how he had a sudden asthma attack. To grab the bottle of medicine, I accidentally toppled off the balcony and fell to my death. Meanwhile, Cameron crawled toward the bedroom to grab his phone.Mr. Wellstone sighed as he smoothed

A spark of hope bloomed within me when I heard Mr. Wellstone's words. I didn't care about whether I was going to disappear. I just wanted Mom to know that I wasn't the one who caused Cameron's death.I hoped that Mom would stop, but instead the oil in the pot began to boil more vigorously.Mom was still adding logs into the fire, looking as if she had lost her mind. "I can't stop, Mr. Wellstone. You're the one who told me that the fire needs to be hot enough to melt her soul. We can't stop now and let our efforts go to waste."She then turned to look at Cameron. The livor mortis spots on his body had increased in number. "No… I have to add more logs. Cam won't be able to hold on for much longer," she mumbled. The oil boiled even hotter as the flames burned even brighter."Mom…" I mustered the last of my strength and called out to her before I melted into a puddle.Mom was incredibly excited when she saw my melted soul floating on the surface of the oil. "We did it! We really di

The room fell silent the moment the words left Mr. Wellstone's lips.In the next second, Mom suddenly sank to her knees and began groveling at my feet. "I'm begging you, Cassandra. You're already dead, so please give your blessings to Cam. He wouldn't have died if not for you."You only need to be fried in oil for seven hours. Think about how much pain Cam must have been in when he was dying. He didn't have his medication, and you weren't by his side. He must have been drowning in despair."Mom began to cry and pray as if she had lost her mind.Meanwhile, I felt as if she had thrown my heart into the pan of oil to be repeatedly fried. "Do you still love me, Mom?" I asked. She didn't hesitate for even a second before she answered, "I love you. I love you so much. But…"She suddenly changed her tone before continuing, "How am I going to live without you or Cam? At least one of you has to stay with me. "You can't be so selfish, Cassandra. Don't blame me for not wanting to bring yo

"You must have a way, Mr. Wellstone," Mom said. "I'm begging you. Please save Cam. I'm willing to pay any price."The shaman, Daniel Wellstone, smoothed down his beard. A hint of reluctance flickered in his eyes when he looked at me."I do have a way, but your daughter will have to suffer a little," he said."So what if she has to suffer?" Mom retorted. "I've never let her experience any hardship since she was a child. All her suffering will be worth it if she can save her brother."She ran over to me with an excited expression. "Didn't you say that you were willing to do anything to make me happy, Cassandra? Are you willing to endure a bit of suffering for Cam's sake?"I frowned, not understanding what was going on. "What's happening, Mom?" I asked.Perhaps feeling worried that I wouldn't agree to her request, Mom decided to tell me the truth. It turned out I thought I had slipped and fainted on the stairs because my memory was damaged—due to my unstable spirit. The truth was,

My first reaction was to feel happy. Perhaps Mom would stop blaming me once she found out that I was dead. Ignoring my current state, I rushed out of the room and shouted, "Mom, look! I'm already dead too. My corpse is under the bed."Mom was carrying Cameron's corpse back to his room at that moment. She scoffed when she heard my words. She tucked the blankets securely around his corpse before slowly turning to look at me, saying, "I know. I was the one who put you under the bed."My smile stiffened. I didn't understand her words. I repeated myself, saying, "I'm dead too, Mom—""I know!" Mom snapped as she leaped to her feet and shot a vicious glare at me. "I was the one who personally retrieved your corpse from Unit 301. I was the one who intentionally stuffed it under the bed!"My eyes widened as my thoughts turned into a chaotic mess.Mom rushed to my room and dragged my corpse out from under the bed. She pointed at my deformed face and said, "I left you and Cam at home whe
