LOGINWhen she entered the clearing after him, her sharp canine gaze immediately located him, standing in the middle of the small meadow, shoulders back, and head held tall. A sight that would have crippled her in her human form for the way it would turn her knees into jelly.
Aiden Black stood in the middle of that clearing, as he always did, like a tanned herculean Greek sculpture, with very nearly every muscle on his body left on display for her to drink in. His face was framed by those thick locks that were blacker than a midnight sky, messy and unkempt from their playful game, just the way she liked it.
His vibrant green eyes reflected the forest in them and were filled with pride, delight, and an emotion that she was far too afraid to identify but knew was there because it was always there, staring back at her with an almost painful glimmer of hope that it too would reflect back at him through her eyes.
Something that left the feeling of lead in the pit of her stomach and made her a tiny bit nauseous to think about. But also something that was undeniably present in each of his gazes in his smile, in the way he moved his body to match hers, and more importantly, something she could feel through their bond that linked their very souls together.
And when she admitted it to herself, it absolutely terrified her. He motioned her over and she trotted toward him with a grace she had never known she possessed until 3 months ago. Her tail was wagging lazily from side to side behind her as she approached the man before her, another thing she never thought she’d think about.
She stopped beside him, practically feeling his warmth radiating from his body to hers, even in the heat of the summer sun. Even in his human form, he was taller than her, she came up to his shoulders in this form. He had told her as a wolf she was on the slender side when compared to other wolves, less muscular, smaller, but no less toned and no less powerful than the others.
But then again even as a man he towered over her human form, always forcing her to have to look up to meet his gaze, something she still struggled with since her change. His six-foot-four frame was built like he was made by some ancient and long-since-dead Greek sculptor, for even though he wasn’t hulking, in any way, he was still muscular, and it made her mouth water.
Compared to that her five-foot-five stature was nothing as he towered over her even in this more powerful form. At first, she’d been a little vexed that she’d been a smaller wolf than others, having already been a small human before, until she learned that size did not determine strength or power.
‘Great Job! Your control is getting much better,’ he complimented as she stopped before him. She gave a shake at his words, very canine-like in her mannerisms, a sign her wolf wasn’t too far beneath the surfice of her mind.
The snow-white wolf practically purred at the sound of his voice, the deep baritone sending shivers to the ends of her nerves and back. The human in her chastised the wolf for her reaction, but she too was secretly pleased, something easily broadcast through the pathway between their souls.
‘Right, now it’s time to change back,’ he took a step back and looked at her expectantly, that smile still on his face.
The fur on the back of her neck raised at his suggestion and she growled in displeasure taking a step back and falling into a defensive position. She didn’t want to change back, she hated changing back.
His smile dimmed a little but did not fall from his face as he let out a tired-sounding sigh before taking a step closer to her. He looked into her shocking blue eyes, the wolf shining through, and took in the irritation within them but did not allow it to deter him.
‘I know you hate it. I know you still struggle with the change but the more you practice the more control you’ll have over the wolf,’
Alexa let out an irritated huff and rolled her eyes at the man, he gave her a pointed look that only added to her annoyance, which she knew he could feel. Then she gave in and closed her eyes, trying to imagine her human form.
‘That’s it, deep breaths and make sure to relax. Try not to think of it as exchanging one form for another but rather one form that holds two shapes and you are merely morphing between them,’
Aiden coached her through it as he always did and she allowed the sound of his voice to relax her, allowed him to guide her through the change. She focused on what it felt like to be human. Bit by bit Alexa felt her wolf recede into the recesses of her mind and with a whimper of pain the change began.
Aiden had once described the change as something exciting, an itch you couldn’t quite scratch, but something completely natural like breathing. But for her, it was one of the most excruciating things she had ever gone through.
Her entire body shivered in pain, and then her bones began to break…
‘Alexa, please!’ Aiden called out, a new tentative tone filtered into his voice adding to the pleading and concern that had already been there as he followed her but this time he did not reach out to stop her, instead he followed at what he deemed a safe distance like he was tracking a predator, and in a way he supposed he was for she on the hunt.Alexa ignored him, her mind focused now on only one thing: to find and confront Jayden regarding her behavior the past six months. And she wasn't going to stop until she got herself some answers.Alexa tracked Griffon by his scent, allowing her wolf instincts to take over her more rational human mind, which was all too happy to step aside for the wolf. She knew he'd lead her straight to Jayden, under the impression Aiden would have been able to stop her or talk some sense into her, and for that, he would have been wrong. She found them near the building her mother used for her witchy business and school to teach Isaac and Jayden about witchc
That night, when the sun had set, and the moon hung high in the sky, leaving the world silent as the day and all its events bled way into the night, left Alexa to find herself sitting in their ridiculously large dining room, surrounded by so many faces but feeling more alone than she’d ever felt in her entire life. She sat there, this time not at the head of the table but rather to the side, Aiden taking up the seat to her left, leaving the seat to her right empty, a new development she was struggling to accept as its usual occupant sat farther down the table, avoiding her questioning glances. This left the redheaded werewolf contemplating her life and the way it had turned out these past six months whilst she sat pushing the food around on her plate almost absent-mindedly, her mouth tight and her brow furrowed as the room was filled with the dull hum of talking, accompanied by the occasional laugh from someone here and there. Her eyes drifted from person to person, taking in their
With a thunderous crash, Alexa found herself lying flat on her back, her lungs screaming in agony as the air left them like an escaped convict, both suddenly and silently. In comparison, the skin of her back throbbed almost loudly, stinging from the impact of her full body weight slamming against the barely padded flooring they had the audacity to call a sparring mat. Stars burst from behind eyelids she'd had no memory of closing, and she fought behind sharp, painful gasps in a desperate attempt to refill her lungs with much-needed oxygen. Her head still spinning from the way her opponent had unceremoniously flipped her feet over her head, leaving her sprawled across the floor like a corpse barely clinging to life, a look of utter bewilderment frozen on her face, and don’t even get her started on the state of her hair. ‘Again,’ came the authoritative command, and Alexa merely groaned, fingers clenching against the mat. The sound came out as more of a pathetic whine than the guttural
Griffon shot a look over his broad shoulders at the silent Jayden, who had yet to stand from her seat. Her shoulders were slumped forward, and a look of guilt was etched into her face, which had become thinner due to stress over the past six months. When she looked up to meet his gaze, something unspoken passed between them before he nodded and followed after the couple. His heart heavy with a secret they now shared between them. Jayden watched the man leave the room, following after her one and only friend and cousin, whom she had been unable to speak to in these past six months as they had before. Her heart sat heavy in her chest, and her stomach twisted with the secret she didn’t know how to share with one she used to share everything with. ‘You still haven’t told her, have you?’ Jean asked with a knowing look in her wise forest-colored eyes. ‘Is it that obvious?’ the young brunette asked, her voice small and full of worry. ‘You didn’t say a word, not once during the meeting. I
The stiff ambiance of the room was all but suffocating to the seven occupants, the tension so thick it could have been sliced in half with a sharp enough blade. Seven pairs of eyes glanced at one another, each one weighed down heavily by worry and something far more sinister, a sense of dread that left nothing but dry mouths unable to speak. To think this is where they found themselves when six months ago the world had been a much smaller place, there were far fewer worries to weigh down on the heart of the young, new Alpha. For whom would have ever thought a mere nineteen-year-old would have to worry about the livelihood and safety of an entire supernaturally gifted village that housed the pack she had inherited from her late father? A responsibility she had been wholly unprepared to shoulder on her own was now thrust at her with no word of warning or care that she had no idea what she was doing. She looked around the room at her companions, each one burdened by their own fears and
‘Damn it!’ the scream echoed through the seemingly abandoned mansion, closely followed by the sound of glass shattering. A dark red liquid dripped ominously from the remains of what once had been a crystal whiskey glass. Staining both the wall it had been shattered against, and the carpet directly beneath said wall, now littered with glittering glass shards, as if millions of tiny diamonds had been scattered across the expensive hotel room. Those glass remnants glinted almost hauntingly in the dancing flames from his hotel room fireplace; the light could almost be described as beautiful if he'd still had a heart to appreciate such things, but alas, he was as empty as the metaphorical tomb which had once housed his soul. Nothing but desolate echoes where his human emotions had once ruled his every whim. No, all that now remained was his deep, unsatiated hunger and an even deeper need to satisfy his revenge. The once calm atmosphere of his temporary den was now filled with a suffocat
