My name is Callie Lockwood, and for two years, I paid for a crime I didn't commit. I was the beloved daughter, the doted-on sister, the girl promised forever by my childhood fiancé Liam. Then Rowena came back from the dead, the family's real blood, and I became the mistake no one wanted to admit they'd made. They gave her my brother's love. They gave her my fiancé. And when she killed a werewolf noble, they gave her my freedom too. Two years in a cell built for monsters stripped me of everything, even my wolf. I came out a shadow of who I used to be, wanting nothing but to walk away and owe my so-called family nothing. But shadows have a way of being noticed. Two of the most powerful Lycan royals in the kingdom want my attention, and neither one is asking twice. Now the family who buried me alive wants forgiveness. My brother wants his sister back. Liam wants to know why he ever let me go. It's too late. They just don't know it yet.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

People never know what freedom is, until they have been thrown into prison for crimes they did not commit.

Callie curled into herself as the blows landed again, her arms wrapped tightly over her head. The other girls in her cell block had cornered her by the wash basins, and as always, no one came to stop them.

Her wolf had gone silent so long ago she had stopped reaching for her—curled deep into the dark beneath the worst of what had been done to her.

"Look at her," one sneered, grabbing a fistful of Callie's hair and slamming her head against the stone wall. "Noble blood, they said. Doesn't look so noble now."

Callie did not cry out. Crying only made it last longer.

The girl leaned down, her breath hot and foul against Callie's ear. "No one's coming for you."

Callie squeezed her eyes shut, forcing down the metallic taste of blood pooling in her mouth.

A sharp whistle cut through the damp air. The girls scattered like rats before the beta officers on duty could catch them, leaving Callie crumpled on the cold floor.

An officer walked in, boots echoing off the stone, a clipboard tucked under his arm.

"Inmate 3456," the officer read off his list, not bothering to look at her. "Get up. You've been released. There's an Alpha outside waiting for you."

Released. Alpha.

Those words struck her like a physical blow, leaving her breathless. Her fingers twitched against the damp stone floor.

Two years. For two whole years, she had survived on the dying hope that someone would come, that he would come. But it ended not with an apology, not with a tearful reunion, just a bored officer reading her number off a list like surplus inventory.

The thought of confronting the family who had cast her aside terrified Callie. She shrank from the prospect of facing the very people who had stripped away her dignity, reducing her overnight from their doted-on princess to a disgraced convict.

She followed him down the dark corridor in silence, past the rusted iron bars that had bounded her world for two long years.

The matron stood waiting by the exit gate, arms crossed over her chest. "So they're finally letting you out," she sneered, stepping close enough for Callie to smell the stale smoke on her breath. "Keep your mouth shut outside. No trouble. No more killing." Her smile turned sharp as a blade. "Don't be stupid enough to throw away a second chance, because if you end up back here, you won't walk out again."

Callie did not argue; she merely gave a single, hollow nod. In this place, the truth had never mattered.

The sunlight outside was blindingly bright. Callie blinked against the harsh glare as she crossed the heavy steel threshold. Her tattered clothing hung loose off her thin, bruised frame. She carried no bags, no belongings—just herself, and even that felt far too heavy.

A sleek black car was parked just beyond the gates, looking pristine and completely out of place on this side of town.

Peter stood leaning against the passenger side, arms crossed over his chest.

Her older brother Peter, the family’s eldest and the newly inherited Alpha of their pack. The very man who had proposed she take the blame for Rowena’s heinous crime.

She could still remember the solemn weight of his voice the day he sat on the edge of her bed, telling her she had to take the fall. She had once been a beloved, doted-on member of the family—until two years ago, when their long-lost biological daughter Rowena reappeared, and Callie was turned into the sacrificial lamb to repay fifteen years of raised kindness.

Peter didn't step forward to welcome her, nor did he make any move to reach out. He simply watched her walk closer, his face an unreadable mask.

She saw the exact moment his composure flickered. As his eyes swept over her gaunt figure, a flash of confusion crossed his face, followed by an emotion hard to name, which he instantly locked away behind his usual cold indifference.

Callie knew what he was looking for. The old Callie would have run toward him, thrown her arms around his neck, and sobbed about how agonizing these two years had been. She would have demanded to know why nobody visited, why nobody wrote back, why he had taken so long to rescue her.

That girl did not exist anymore.

Callie stopped a few feet away and looked at him, remaining entirely silent.

He lifted a hand halfway as if to reach for her, then caught himself, smoothly dropping his hand back into his pocket and adjusting his posture into his usual cool, dignified stance.

Peter shifted, clearly uncomfortable under her hollow gaze. "That's it? No hello?" His voice came out sharper than intended, as if her quietness had caught him off guard and he was lashing out to cover his unease. "I drove all the way out here for you."

"Hello, Alpha," Callie said, her tone flat and lifeless.

Peter frowned, searching her face for something familiar and coming up empty. A flicker of unease passed behind his eyes before he straightened, letting his well-practiced armor of arrogance slide back into place.

"Get in," he said, jerking his head toward the car. "We need to get back before dark."

Callie walked around to the passenger side without a word and climbed inside. The cool leather felt strange against her skin—she hadn't touched anything this clean or soft since the day she was locked away.

Peter got in beside her, started the engine, and pulled away from the gate without looking back. For a long time, the silence inside the car was suffocating. Callie watched the labor camp shrink in the side mirror until it disappeared behind the tree line.

"You don't look happy," Peter muttered, his grip tightening on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.

Callie kept her eyes on the glass. "Should I?"

Peter sighed, a sound of practiced patience. "Careful with that attitude, Callie. We are trying to move past this, but you need to do your part too."

She didn't answer. She could feel his eyes darting toward her every few seconds, waiting for a breakdown, a crack in her wall, anything he could push against. She gave him nothing.

"There's a party tonight," Peter said after another long stretch of silence, his voice taking on that calm, reasonable tone he always used when laying down rules. "A big one. All the pack elders and several high-ranking guests will be attending."

Something in Callie's chest twitched—an old, buried memory of past celebrations thrown in her honor, back when she was the center of her family's world. "There's no need to throw one for me," she said quietly. "I don't need a party."

Peter adjusted his collar, offering a faint, diplomatic smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Think of it as a welcome back if you want, but don't cause any trouble. This party means a lot to Rowena. We have an honored guest arriving within the hour."

Callie turned her gaze back to the window, letting the silence swallow his words. She had expected as much.

It was almost ironic. She had spent two grueling years locked away in a hellhole for a crime she didn't commit, taking the fall so their precious daughter wouldn't have to face the consequences. And now, she was returning home not to a family seeking forgiveness, but to a grand celebration for the very girl who had stolen her life. They treated Rowena as the tragic victim, while Callie remained the outcast.

Peter glanced at her again, unsettled by her lack of retaliation. He had clearly expected an argument, tears, or anger—something he knew how to crush. The quiet emptiness unnerved him far more than any outburst.

"You're being strange," he muttered under his breath, turning the wheel.

The car turned down the paved driveway toward the grand estate, tall wrought-iron gates rising ahead. As the vehicle pulled to a stop inside the courtyard, Peter cut the engine. He turned to face her directly, his eyes finally taking in more than just her cold expression.

His gaze dropped, assessing the faint bruises peeking past her sleeve and the poorly healed cut near her collarbone.

"Callie," he said slowly, an edge of genuine alarm creeping into his voice. "What is that on your—"

He reached out, his fingers brushing against her skin to pull back her sleeve.

The moment he touched her, Callie gasped—a sharp, strangled sound.

Her body reacted before her mind could think. She violently yanked her arm back, throwing her hands over her head and ducking into a tight, trembling ball against the car door.

Peter froze, his hand hanging uselessly in the air, his face completely draining of color as he stared at her.
