Chapter 121

The vampire’s voice slithers through the darkness, thick with amusement and hunger.

“Looks like the master’s plans are finally falling into place,” he muses, his tone lilting like he’s enjoying some inside joke at my expense.

I don’t know what he’s talking about—and I honestly don’t care.

I stay still, my breaths shallow, my pulse hammering against my ribs. I know better than to respond, better than to give him the satisfaction of my fear.

But he hears it anyway. Smells it. His lips curve into a slow, knowing smile, the dim light catching on the glistening points of his fangs.

Then he moves.

It’s not just speed. It’s something unnatural, something that makes my stomach lurch, because one moment he’s feet away, and the next, he’s right in front of me. I don’t have time to react before he slams into me, sending us both crashing into a bookshelf. Wood cracks, books explode into the air, pages fluttering like startled birds. The impact knocks the breath from my lungs, but I don’t have tim

The bite on her neck is still bleeding sluggishly, staining her black, torn shirt with a glossy dampness. She looks dazed, barely aware of anything around her, as if she’s caught between the nightmare of what just happened and the reality that she survived.I kneel beside her. “Valerie. Are you okay?”It’s a stupid question, and I know it the second it leaves my lips. Of course, she’s not okay. No one would be after that. Her gaze flickers to mine, exausted but searching. “Dumb question,” she murmurs, trying for sarcasm but lacking the energy to pull it off.A weak breath of relief escapes me. If she’s talking, she’s alive. I don’t let myself focus on how close that came to not being true. Instead, I slip an arm under hers, helping her up. She hisses through her teeth but doesn’t protest as I guide her toward a plush couch in the corner of the library. Her legs barely hold her weight, and by the time we reach the couch, she’s shaking. I ease her down carefully.“Stay here,” I tell her

He’s taunting me. He doesn’t think I’m a threat. Hell—he might be right. But I’m not letting that deter me.I grit my teeth through the pain, pushing harder, faster, forcing the change to completion. My jaw cracks, stretching forward into a snout, and my ears sharpen into points. The sounds around me amplify—Valerie’s erratic breathing, the rustle of the vampire shifting his weight, the dripping of blood onto the floor. And the scent—thick, coppery, unmistakable. The scent that drives him mad.He turns back to Valerie, unable to resist. His hunger outweighs his caution, and that is his mistake. He lunges, fangs sinking into Valerie’s throat with a grotesque slurp.I don’t think. I act. With a snarl, I launch myself forward. My claws dig into the wooden floor as I propel my body straight at him. The impact is brutal, sending both of us crashing across the floor. He growls, fangs bared, but I clamp my teeth down onto his shoulder, tearing through the unnatural toughness of his flesh. He

Her wild, tear-streaked face tells me otherwise. She lets out a feral cry, her next swipe aiming for my arm. I barely manage to jerk back in time, the tip of the blade grazing the sleeve of my jacket. If she wasn’t holding a damn dagger, I might be able to pin her down, but I know I can’t afford to get that close. She lunges again, and this time, I’m not fast enough. Pain stings across my upper arm as the dagger nicks me. I hiss, stumbling back.Valerie’s breathing is ragged, her grip on the weapon tightening as she glares at me with pure, unfiltered hatred. “You don’t get to take everything from me and just walk away!” she screams.“I didn’t take anything!” Well, except for Elijah—who she doesn’t even want. And despite me feeling bad for her, I have to remind myself it’s not my fault how she’s been forced into this kind of situation. I press my palm against my bleeding arm, heart hammering. “Valerie, listen to yourself! You don’t have to do this. There’s so many things you can do to

You’d think after nearly getting blown to bits, I’d get a damn day off. But no, here I am, trudging to the library scarce a few hours after the teachers cleared up the hallway outside it—like nothing happened. My thigh still aches every now and then, my body sore from training and shifting, but none of that matters. Not when there’s so much to figure out. I need to find Elijah. I need to show him the sketch of the door from Nate’s vision. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll recognize it. And if he doesn’t, then we’re back to square one with more questions and no answers. But first, books.I sigh as I unlock the library doors, flipping on the lights and stepping inside. The scent of aged pages and roasted coffee greets me like a bittersweet hug. If I weren’t preoccupied with supernatural schemes and the sour library assistants, I’d actually love this place more.I set my bag down behind the front desk and get to work. Lights on. Coffee corner set up. Chairs pushed in. By the time I finish, the li

“Hailstorm. You do know that the odds of that happening are like… one in a thousand?” Luca says dryly, picking at the food on his tray. He gestures vaguely in my direction with a fry before tossing it into his mouth. “You and alpha-boy are the Huntress’s favorites, I swear.”“You reckon?” I arch a brow, leaning back in my seat. “With everything she’s thrown our way?”“I heard it builds stronger character,” he quips, smirking as he chews.I roll my eyes. “Thanks. That’s real reassuring.”Luca only shrugs, unbothered. Then, after a pause, he grabs his hot dog, takes a casual bite, chews, and swallows before adding, “So. I heard you got the key back.”“Elijah told you.” It isn’t a question.“Yeah.” He sets his half-eaten hot dog back onto his plate, expression unreadable. “I still think asking ghosts for advice is an excellent idea.”I shoot him a flat look. “After the history-obsessed one, you really still want to go that route?”“Absolutely,” he says without hesitation, like he’s actua
