Chapter 1

Today was the day Alex Damson, Lily Calder, and I were supposed to head to Moon City.

Yet here I was, sitting in the car waiting for over two hours.

[Vanessa, I’m sorry. Lily has a fever and is feeling really sick. Moon City is too far, and I’m worried she won’t be able to handle the trip. Let’s change the location for your coming-of-age ceremony. I’ll let you know once we pick a new spot.]

Looking at the text message Alex had just sent, I couldn't help but feel a wave of bitter irony.

My eighteenth birthday was in three days, which was also the day my wolf spirit would finally awaken.

Moon City was said to be blessed by the Moon Goddess, and it was a destination I had dreamed of visiting ever since I was a child.

We had agreed on this trip long ago so we could celebrate my eighteenth birthday together and witness my wolf spirit awakening right there.

Now, just because Lily had a fever, Alex casually changed the plan without bothering to tell me in advance.

I took a deep breath, desperately trying to calm myself down.

Honestly, this wasn’t the first time something like this had happened.

Alex and I had been inseparable since childhood, sharing a connection so natural it felt like we were fated mates.

Everyone always said we were the perfect match, and deep down, I secretly hoped he would turn out to be my fated mate, too.

That was until Lily showed up.

When rogues attacked Lily’s pack, she was the sole survivor.

The day we found her, she was wrapped in a blood-stained wool blanket, looking completely frail and helpless. Feeling deeply sorry for her, I took her in.

At first, Alex was cold toward Lily, almost showing outright disdain. After all, Lily was just an Omega, and Alex had never liked weaklings.

However, Lily was constantly trailing behind him, always turning to him for help. Perhaps being so desperately needed felt too good to resist, because slowly but surely, Alex’s attitude began to shift.

He started paying more attention to her, learning her likes and dislikes. Whenever anyone picked on Lily, he was always the first to step up and protect her.

As time went on, Alex spent less and less time alone with me. Lily always claimed I was her best friend, but whenever the three of us walked together, she only ever talked to Alex.

In fact, they wouldn't even notice when I lagged far behind, leaving me to watch them walk away like a total outsider.

This trip to Moon City for my coming-of-age ceremony was something we had planned way ahead of time, and Alex knew better than anyone how much I had longed to go. Still, with a single phrase from Lily saying she felt "unwell", Alex threw it all out the window.

He didn't even bother asking for my thoughts—he simply notified me of his decision.

"Miss Vanessa, should we keep waiting? If we don't leave now, I'm afraid we won't make it to Moon City before dark." The driver's voice suddenly cut through my thoughts.

I looked down at my phone again.

Alex had sent another text: [Vanessa, why aren’t you replying? I know we should have told you earlier, but Lily really isn’t feeling well. She thinks you’re mad at her and hasn't stopped crying. She’s your friend, so you should be a little more understanding.]

Understanding… I had heard that word way too many times.

Every time Alex neglected me and put Lily’s needs before mine, he always told me to be understanding.

Well, I was done putting up with it.

"Let's go," I told the driver.

I turned off my phone, tossed it into my bag, took a deep breath, and closed my eyes.

This time, I was done playing the outsider. I chose to walk away.

On the day of our mating ceremony, I was slipping into my gown when a knock suddenly sounded at the door.A staff member walked in carrying a package, saying someone had asked him to deliver it straight to me.I opened the package to find a small box inside, and resting within it was a ruby ring. The cut of the ring was slightly worn down, looking rather old and weathered.I recognized it instantly—it was the very same ruby ring Alex had given me back then.I had clearly thrown this ring straight into the trash can, yet somehow Alex had managed to find it. And now it had somehow found its way back to me.Tucked underneath the ring was a small piece of paper.[Vanessa. I will wait forever for you to come back to me.]I called the staff member back over and told him to return the package, stating that I didn't want it. If the sender refused to take it back, he could just dispose of it himself.Just then, Troy pushed open the door and happened to catch sight of the scene. He look

Lately, word had been going around that Alex had come all the way to the Northern Territory. He had tried to see me, but people kept chasing him away.I had deleted all his messages and blocked his number. I honestly thought I would never have to lay eyes on Alex again. At least, not until that afternoon. The moment I stepped through the front door, the sound of a scuffle echoed from the living room.Troy had someone pinned to the floor, his knee pressing heavily against the intruder's back while one hand held the guy's neck down as he thrashed around wildly."Troy, my god, what is happening?!"I hurried over."He was sneaking around outside, looking like he was about to jump the fence, so I caught him and gave him a beating," Troy explained.I rushed forward, and when I caught sight of the guy's face, I gasped out loud. "Alex?!"Seeing me, Alex began struggling even harder against the hold."Vanessa! I finally found you! They wouldn't let me see you, so this was the only way

I was woken up by an insanely sweet aroma.I sat up and sniffed the air carefully. Mmm... it smelled like butter, flatbread, sweet tea, and some kind of savory seared meat. After last night’s awakening ceremony, I was absolutely starving, so I quickly threw on my clothes and hurried downstairs. When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I found Troy in the kitchen. His back was turned away, wearing a simple dark dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, exposing his toned forearms as he leaned down to arrange something on a plate. The dining table was packed with food: golden buttered flatbread, steaming sweet tea, steak and eggs, and a bowl of yogurt topped with fresh berries.Mom was sitting at the table, clutching a teacup. She looked delighted, clearly thrilled with everything laid out in front of her.Hearing my footsteps, she looked up and offered me a soft smile."Vanessa, you're finally awake." She glanced over at Troy. "Troy came over super early just to make breakfast for

I stood in the middle of the courtyard, taking deep breaths to try to get myself to relax."Don't be nervous, sweetheart."Mom kissed my forehead and wrapped me in a hug."It'll all be over soon." She patted my back reassuringly. "Go on, just do as your dad said."Dad stood beside us, his expression grave as he gestured for me to kneel."Vanessa, my daughter," Dad's deep, steady voice sounded. "The Moon Goddess will bestow upon you your wolf spirit and your bloodline. Tonight, your wolf is about to wake up. Don't fight it, and don't be afraid—just let it out."The moonlight bathed my body as I closed my eyes.At first, nothing happened. Then, the ambient sounds around me began to fade into the distance, and the pain struck without warning.I could hear my bones popping and cracking beneath my skin, my muscles stretching, twisting, and reshaping themselves. My spine arched uncontrollably, my fingers digging into the dirt as my nails grew long and hard, while my skin felt as th

"Vanes—"I hung up, not wanting to hear another word of whatever Alex had to say.Soon, the plane lifted into the sky, and with it, my new life was finally beginning. When I dragged my suitcase into the airport arrival hall, a sleek black car was already idling near the entrance. Standing beside it was a tall figure with his back toward me, clad in a sharp, tailored black suit. He had broad shoulders and an exceptionally upright posture. Even from just his silhouette, I could tell he was undeniably handsome. As if hearing my footsteps, he turned around."Vanessa." He walked over to me, a subtle curve forming at the corners of his lips. "Long time no see.""Troy?"I stood there in shock for a good few seconds.Troy Johnson was the son of a close friend of my father's. Growing up, Troy was always so serious, constantly trailing behind me with a stoic face. But he had grown so much taller since I last saw him, his facial features far more defined and his jawline dangerously

I transferred my pack affiliation back to the Northern Territory, ready to bid farewell to everything here.So I went home to pack up my things. However, just as I reached my front door, I spotted a tall figure leaning against the stone wall beside the entrance. His arms were crossed over his chest, with a frail figure huddled right next to him.The second Alex saw me, he marched right over. His face was thoroughly flushed with irritation, a sense of anxiety in his eyes that he couldn't quite hide."Vanessa." He blocked my path. "Why have you been ignoring all my texts? Why didn't you let me know you were back? Do you have any idea—""I'm back, aren't I?" I cut him off, my voice dead calm. "Now you know."He froze, choking out a dry sound as if he hadn't expected me to react like this."Fine, then why did you go to Moon City all by yourself? Didn't we agree...""Alex," I said, my patience wearing thin. "Didn't you say it yourself? Lily couldn't go, so I went alone. Is there a
