For hours, we rode through the creek, the horses patiently pushing against the current. With every passing hour, my hope of reaching a village before nightfall faded a little more. Most of the time, the water came only to the horses’ knees, but occasionally we passed through deeper stretches where it rose to their bellies. The sun blazed overhead, its reflection glittering mercilessly across the slow-moving water until my head began to ache behind my eyes.

MayaI sat on the horse blanket with my knees pulled tightly to my chest, watching Tyler move around the camp with the practiced ease of a man who had spent more nights beneath the stars than beneath the chandeliers of a pack dining hall.He had butchered the boar with frightening efficiency and arranged the meat over a spit he had fashioned from sticks. Every few minutes, he turned it over the flames, watching the skin slowly brown as fat dripped into the glowing coals. The smell was torture and my stomach growled loudly. Beside me, Valeria was practically drooling. I pretended not to notice. She had not said a single word about what had happened at the creek. She didn’t need to.The moment I had returned to camp, flushed from my bath and deliberately avoiding Tyler’s direction, Valeria had taken one look at me and understood everything. Without a word, she handed me my red dress. I pulled it over my clean shift as quickly as possible and sat down, determined to look as though nothin

TylerI needed to run. That was the truth, stripped of every practical excuse I could give myself.Yes, we needed meat. Yes, the boar tracks along the upper bank were fresh and worth following. But neither of those things was the real reason I had disappeared into the forest. The real reason was Maya Russell.Ever since she had grabbed my neck when her legs gave out and fallen against my chest, my wolf had been crawling beneath my skin, restless and impossible to ignore. If I stayed near her much longer, I was afraid I might do something I would regret. So I ran.I shifted the moment the trees closed around me. The relief was immediate as four paws hit the earth, and suddenly the world became simpler. Scents sharpened. Sounds separated. Every rustle in the undergrowth became distinct. The wind carried information I didn’t have to think about. No Maya.No thoughts about her fingers curling around my neck. No thoughts about the soft weight of her body against mine or that tiny startled

The sun blazed overhead, its reflection glittering mercilessly across the slow-moving water until my head began to ache behind my eyes.Sweat trickled down my neck and soaked through my dress beneath my breasts. Flies buzzed around my face, persistently seeking the tender skin behind my ears. The only mercy was our slow pace. At least I wasn’t being bounced and jostled painfully against the saddle. By late afternoon, my body felt as though it had been wrung dry. Finally, Tyler guided his horse toward the bank and hauled him up onto a sandy stretch of ground.“We’ll camp here tonight.”Arion grunted as he climbed after him, carrying me toward the grassy clearing

  • Moon kissed, Blood crowned   Ch 17- Find her

Lord Draken The moon flowers in the south gallery had been replaced sometime during the afternoon. I noticed this the way I noticed everything in the fortress—with complete and total indifference. They were perfect, as always. Pure white petals with a moon-shaped center, not a single petal out of place, their fragrance precisely calibrated to the dimensions of the gallery. Irene had chosen that particular variety fifty years ago because I had mentioned, once, that I found the scent of moon flowers tolerable. I had not remembered making the comment.Irene had.Humans had always been remarkably sentimental about things I considered insignificant.I stood at the tall south window and watched the last of the sunlight bleed from the sky. The courtyard below was settling into the blue-grey of early twilight. The fountain continued its endless trickle. The gravel remained raked into precise lines, and the guards were finally retreating as darkness approached. Everything in Acheron Fortress

MayaI opened my eyes slowly, feeling strange and completely out of place. The forest floor was hard beneath me, and a tree root was digging painfully into my ribs. I was curled on my side with nothing but my old cloak covering me against the cold and damp. If it weren’t for Valeria, I wouldn’t even have that. All my clothes had been left behind with the carriage. I couldn’t exactly tell my kidnappers to stop and wait while I collected my luggage; that would have made the entire kidnapping look suspicious. Thankfully, Valeria had the foresight to pack her raffia bag with a clean shift, an extra dress, a hairbrush, and, hidden at the very bottom, the clothes I had stolen from Kai’s chamber when I disguised myself as Theo.I moved my limbs carefully and swallowed a whimper of pain. Despite my wolf’s speedy healing, my muscles were still sore and stiff, and my skin was raw from the saddle. Tyler Kingston’s salve had helped considerably, but there was only so much an ointment could do for

TylerShe was in more pain than she was letting on, I knew it the moment she dismounted. The white-knuckled grip on the stirrup leather and the careful way she placed her feet. The slight catch in her breath when her knees nearly gave out beneath her. Yet she never complained. She simply clamped her teeth over that soft, full lower lip and pushed on like a soldier. That was unexpected. I’d expected an Alpha’s daughter to complain. To demand comfort and to make everyone around her aware of every inconvenience.Maya Russell did none of those things. She recovered quickly, lifted her chin, and walked away as though nothing had happened. That told me more about her than any introduction could have. She would rather suffer in silence than ask for help. I recognized her type, I’d been that type for most of my life.I watched her from across the fire as she shifted her weight with studied casualness, trying desperately to hide the small tightening around her eyes whenever she moved. The maid
