CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

last update Last Updated: 2025-06-28 06:29:59

The city was silent the morning after our rescue. Not the hopeful quiet of peace, but the strained hush that stretches before an explosion. Buildings stood like broken sentinels against a pale sky, their facades bearing scars from charred portals and bloody conflict.

Kael and I trudged down the alley behind his apartment. Each step echoed in the emptiness, broken glass crunching underfoot. We didn’t speak. Words felt heavy.

Earlier, after the fight in the catacombs, I sat cross-legged atop the ruined altar, clasping Edgar to my chest as he clung to life. I didn’t dare close my eyes. Not even for a second. Kael had stayed close, watching me with guarded concern. I was afraid both of my weakness and of letting go.

But morning came anyway, grim, inevitable.

Selene met us at the corner. She looked determined but cautioned us in hushed tones.

“They struck again,” she murmured. “On the East Gargoyle Bridge. Someone detonated a Ward barrier. Twenty civilians dead. They targeted innocents.”

KAEL’S POV:The first thing I notice when I wake up is the weight of her against me. Lyra’s head rests on my chest, one hand curled near her cheek, her breath warm and steady. Her hair spills over her face in tangled waves, and the faint scar where the mark used to be peeks from beneath the edge of the blanket. For months, I lived with the terror that I’d never see her like this again.Alive. Whole. Mine. And even now, even after everything, a part of me still can’t believe I deserve it. I lie perfectly still, memorizing her. The curve of her jaw. The way her lashes cast soft shadows on her cheeks. The way her body fits perfectly against mine, like she was always meant to be here. gods, I could spend the rest of my life just watching her breathe.I reach up carefully, brushing a strand of hair from her face. She stirs slightly but doesn’t wake, her lips parting with a soft sigh. She’s beautiful, not in the way other people see her, because she’s fierce, or powerful, or the Thornbane w

The war was over, but peace didn’t come overnight. Red Hollow was still scarred, buildings half-collapsed, streets cracked and blackened from magic, but life had returned. Children’s laughter echoed down the alleys again. Merchants called out their wares. For the first time in months, I didn’t wake to the sound of war drums. I stood on the balcony of the rebuilt Rotunda, watching the city breathe again. Kael came up behind me, silent as always, his presence brushing against mine like a shadow. His arms slid around my waist, warm and steady.“You’re quiet,” he murmured against my neck.I leaned back into him, closing my eyes. “I’m trying to believe this is real.”His lips brushed my shoulder. “It is. We made it through, Lyra. Finally.”I wanted to believe that. But my hands tightened on the railing.“We almost didn’t,” I whispered.Kael turned me gently to face him, his hands warm on my hips. “I know,” he said softly. “And I hate that I failed you.”I frowned, meeting his eyes. “Failed

The world was silent after the Forgotten Court fell. Too silent. Kael and Astrid stood on either side of me, both bloodied and pale, both refusing to let me fall.“She’s inside me,” I whispered, clutching my chest. The mark, once faint now burned hotter with every breath.Astrid gripped her glaive. “We end her now, before she takes root again.”Kael cupped my face, his eyes desperate. “We’re not killing you to do it. We’ll find another way.”“There is no other way,” Astrid said, her voice low. “If we wait, she’ll win. You know it.”“I don’t care!” Kael snapped. “I won’t lose her!”I stepped back, trembling, my voice soft but steady. “We don’t have time to argue. She’s getting stronger by the second. We have to do this now.”Astrid looked at me, her pale eyes full of respect. “Then we go inside. All of us. We burn her out from the root.”We sat in a circle at the center of the battlefield, hands clasped, Astrid’s glaive forming a ring of protective light around us.“Focus on each other

The earth cracked like a wounded beast, black veins stretching across the battlefield as an icy wind howled through the ruins.Astrid gripped her glaive tighter. “They’re coming.”Kael stepped up beside me, his arm wrapping protectively around my waist. His voice was low, hard. “We’re not running. We end it here.”I stared at the horizon, my chest tightening. The cracks in the earth weren’t just cracks anymore. They were gates, and from them, the Forgotten Court emerged. They came in silence, tall, regal, inhuman beings clad in ancient armor, their eyes glowing like dying stars. Hundreds of them. Thousands. Each step they took made the world tremble.“gods…” Kael whispered.Astrid didn’t flinch. “gods have nothing to do with this.” She planted her glaive into the earth. “Lyra, the Bone Queen’s curse bound them in chaos, but with her gone, they’re united again. We’ll need every ounce of power you have.”I clenched my fists. “I don’t have the mark anymore.”Astrid met my eyes, fierce an

Astrid’s glaive hovered inches from my chest. Kael stood between us, his chest heaving, his sword raised.“Move,” Astrid snapped. “If we don’t end this now, the Bone Queen will win.”“I’m not moving,” Kael growled, his voice low and lethal. “We’re saving her. Do you hear me? We’re saving her.”Astrid’s pale eyes locked on his. “If she breaks, we lose more than Lyra. We lose everything.”Kael stepped closer, blade trembling in his hands. “I’m not letting you kill her.”I watched them through eyes that weren’t fully mine, the Queen’s voice curling through my thoughts like poison.“Do you see? He’ll fight anyone for you. Even your protector. Even himself. But it won’t matter. I’m already inside you.”I could feel her clawing deeper into my soul, dragging me into the Veil.Lyra… give up. You can’t win.“No,” I whispered. “I won’t.”Suddenly, the battlefield vanished. I was inside my own mind, standing in a realm of shadows and bone, and she was there. The Bone Queen. My mirror, my nightma

Astrid’s glaive descended like lightning, aimed for Kael’s heart, the heart that no longer fully belonged to him.“NO!” I screamed, throwing myself in front of the blow.Astrid stopped just short, the blade trembling an inch from my chest.“Lyra, move!” she shouted, her voice breaking. “If we hesitate, we lose everything!”I shook my head, tears streaming down my face. “There has to be another way!”Kael’s body, controlled by the Bone Queen, stepped closer, glowing black fire dripping from his hands.“There isn’t,” the Queen purred. “He’s already mine.”But I could still see him in there. That flicker of him, trapped, fighting, and I wasn’t about to give up.I dropped my dagger and pressed my hands to Kael’s chest.“Listen to me,” I whispered. “You are not her. You are mine. Come back to me.”The Queen laughed through him. “You think words can break me?”I closed my eyes and let the mark burn, not fighting it but channeling it. Kael’s body shuddered violently. I could feel him, somewh
