ELEANOR ROSWELL’S POV –

As soon as we stepped into the forest, the woods swallowed us whole. The fiery orange radiance of the twilight sun, blending with deep coral, illuminated the shadows of the trees. It was broad daylight when we came here, but as soon as we entered this mystical wood, it appeared to have its own time.

I wouldn't deny that this place was paradise, and I didn't even expect that something so majestic existed, since it could only be found in the heart of the mountains.

“We came and we brought people as we always promise,” my brother Jasper stated.

From the glittering grove that stood in the middle of the crystallized river, golden smoke emerged. It gathered in front of the grove and formed an image of golden eyes, the usual form that we had always seen. It floated above the river, and its scattered smoke lingered around the grove.

“Well then, let them come,” said those mystical eyes. His voice was deep and thick, sending shivers down my spine, and his chilling gaze pierced through my soul. I could even feel my fine hairs stiffen.

I had frequently heard its mysterious voice, but this time it felt different; it made me feel uneasy. Or perhaps my brother Jasper’s tone gave me a weird vibe. He had been acting strangely recently, and he was unusually quiet while we were on our way.

Instead of calling our people to step into the river, Jasper went in himself, which was strange. He had strictly told me that only members of our people would be the sacrifice, and now, what was he up to?

“Jasper, what are you doing?” I called him, though my voice slightly stuttered, and yet he didn't bother glancing at me. Maybe it was because my voice was so low that he couldn't hear me, or perhaps it was due to the tension rising in the midst of the luminous atmosphere.

Before I could figure out what he was planning, he pulled out a silver dagger from his back. Wait… silver dagger? Don't tell me… he was up to something terrible. I needed to stop him immediately.

“Jasper!” I screamed, hoping to steal his attention but failed horribly.

Driven by greed, he had already stabbed the magical eyes with the silver dagger he held. And I froze in disbelief—eyes almost came off and my jaw hung open—our people behind me were panicking, terrified and confused as they tried to comprehend what they witnessed. What had he just insanely done?

Right before I could process what I had just witnessed, the skies, filled with beautiful auroras, suddenly became enveloped with pitch-black clouds. Enormous lightning cut the sky in two and struck straight where Jasper was standing. The impact was so powerful that it blew him inches away, and so was I.

The dagger shattered into a million pieces; the golden smoke that had once formed golden eyes now spiraled back to the grove. The wind was wuthering, as if it was slapping our faces. I was in the dark, but for sure, we were in hot boiling water.

“You traitors!” the voice growled in anger, making my knees tremble in fear. “Your descendants and nation will pay for what you owe!”

In the blink of an eye, the golden smoke vanished. The majestic forest that looked like paradise was replaced by darkness; the trees and flowers that gave life now withered, covered with thick fog through which we could hardly see anything, and nothing but a cold breeze that almost froze us to death.

“What have you done, Jasper!?” I yelled. My lips trembled in horror, and so did my body. I had a horrible feeling that something terrifying was about to happen.

Broadened eyes met my horrified gaze. His hands were shivering, yet I could see on his face that he was proud of what he did. “I gave us power, Ellie. Power that will make our nation prosper and become powerful beyond anyone.”

I never would have imagined what I was seeing right now, nor what I was hearing. Jasper had just turned into someone I didn't recognize.

For the first time in ages, I was terrified of him. A tear escaped from my eyes while my lips trembled. “You didn't give us power, Jasper! You placed a curse upon us!” I burst into tears. Every drop of my tear on the withered grass shared the agony of this mystical place.

“You are the curse, Ellie.” A terrifying expression gloomed on his face; his sinister look scared me to the core.

As if a grenade had just exploded in my chest while tears flooded my cheeks, I begged, “Jasper, please… I am your sister.” I had never begged like this in my whole life, yet my voice didn't get through to him.

Chills turned me to stone. I couldn't feel any inch of my muscles as I witnessed my brother driven by lust for power, someone I was now terrified of.

“Don't do this… Jasper! No!

Chapter TenKIAN MCFADDEN’S POV-“Will she be alright, Kian?” Aunt Kylie asked, her worried eyes focused on Nicolette, who had just melted into my embrace.I looked up at her with assurance. “Surely. It's the aura of the next full moon that is triggering her uncontrollable transformation.” My gaze returned to Nicolette as I paused, gently running my knuckles over her soft cheeks. “And her wolf was clearly restraining the transformation.”Her breath caught in her throat as she clenched her fist on her chest. “Restraining is more brutal than the actual transformation. Won't mate bonding help?”The thought made my lips tremble. “How can I? If her wolf is rejecting mine.” I sighed, helpless in a situation where she was already within my reach and I couldn't do anything. I had impatiently waited for 13 years just to get rejected and look like a total idiot. That's a whole new level of humiliation.“What’s going to happen to her if that’s the case?” Aunt Kylie continued.Possibilities start

Chapter NineNICOLETTE’S POV-“Have a seat,” the old woman said, showing us her old couch that had faded from being with her for years. “It might be old, but it is still comfortable when winter comes.”While watching the old woman disappear into the kitchen, Kian and I carefully settled on the couch. My eyes subconsciously wandered around the corners of the house—nothing much, nothing suspicious. It was just a simple and cozy home for a person who only wanted peace in life.“Looking for something suspicious?” A warm sensation tickled my neck after I heard a gentle whisper in my right ear.I could feel it even without glancing over. His face was so close to mine that every breath lingered on the edges of my skin, sending electricity through my veins. What the hell was wrong with this idiot? He surely had the nerve to get this close to someone he barely knew. Before I turned to stone, I swallowed all the uneasy feelings that could blur my thoughts. “Get away from me,” I tried to say fir

Chapter EightNICOLETTE’S POV-Last night was amazing, beyond words could express. I had fun with James hanging around town, eating unique foods that I never had when I was in town, and chatting endlessly. Despite the fun, I was still disappointed when I got home. Not a single piece of information about the possible gunshot that I heard. Deliberately dragging him to the street where people suspiciously gathered, yet he was surely good at getting away with it. To avoid suspicion, I didn't press him if he tried to dodge it whenever I showed some curiosity. He assured me that it was a thief who tried to break in and shoot due to violently resisting.Indeed, it would be reasonable; however, his words were suspicious enough to doubt, not to mention the restless sleep I had. Which was why I ended up in this situation.Earlier this morning, while only thick fog was visible and freezing air was wrapping the streets, I went to the grocery store for a quick shopping trip. Not only to buy person

Chapter SevenNICOLETTE'S POV-- A cold evening breeze slapped my face as I headed out of the house, sending shivers down my skin. Starvation could make you immune to any sort of coldness so that you didn't mind freezing to death, as long as you had filled your stomach with anything edible. It had been a hell of a day; I barely had anything to eat, and thanks to heaven's mercy, my foot was still touching the ground.People were walking in a certain direction that made me completely forget I had gone out for dinner. Few were heading in the opposite direction, while most were gathered in an area where other people were heading.James was with me as we headed to a fast-food chain to get something to eat; his eyes were focused ahead as if he didn't notice the people gathering a few steps ahead of me. I was behind him, curiosity glued my head in a different direction. Was this related to the gunshot I heard earlier? Before I could even realize it, my foot had already taken me to the gather

Chapter SixNICOLETTE'S POV--A blink of surprise went out of me in response to his serious tone, brows furrowed in confusion. “W-wait… What?”No response from him, yet his brows were drawn together. He looked over his shoulder while his protective arms still locked me in between. His once sparkling navy blue eyes grew deeper; it sent goosebumps through my veins, and his intensified aura shifted the atmosphere.Stoned in confusion, not a single clue of what he said or what was happening. I didn't even know what the hell I was doing in his arms, as I was just as worthless as I could fucking be.In the middle of trying to comprehend every scrambled question in my mind, the main door crashed open. I was frozen in surprise, my palms sweating. What kind of human being would intrude on someone's house like that?“Stay at my back,” his tone this time was firm. He meant to protect me from whatever was about to happen. Before words could even come out of my mouth, he briskly turned his back to

Chapter FiveNICOLETTE'S POV– It was total darkness. Nothing but the void was visible to my sight. In the midst of blankness, slow yet large steps were detectable by my ear. It gave me goosebumps; my body seemed to be suppressed by God knew what. I could feel the tension rising as deep forest eyes suddenly appeared in front of me. Their eyes were glowing with faint smoke on the edges. As it gradually got bigger, my chest felt like it was being pressed by some weight; it was giving me difficulty breathing. It felt kind of like something blocked my throat so that no matter how deeply I inhaled, I was still short of breath."Don't be afraid, Nicky. I am an ally," said the same deep husky voice. "I am Russo. Your wolf."And with that, I launched out of bed, panting heavily as cold sweat dripped down to my shirt. What the hell was that? When would I have a peaceful sleep? This bullshit was eating up my sanity. The second I stepped on the wooden floor, I collided miserably. My head was kil
