Asher

We moved through the cemetery toward the house as quickly as our feet would carry us.

Not running.

Running turned into fear, and fear turned into command. Running made warriors reckless, careless. Running made shadows into enemies and enemies into ghosts.

I wouldn't give whomever is doing all of this that satisfaction.

The estate rose ahead of us, dark against the winter sky. Every lit window looked fragile. Every stone looked as if it were waiting, holding its breath.

AsherWe moved through the cemetery toward the house as quickly as our feet would carry us.Not running. Running turned into fear, and fear turned into command. Running made warriors reckless, careless. Running made shadows into enemies and enemies into ghosts.I wouldn't give whomever is doing all of this that satisfaction. The estate rose ahead of us, dark against the winter sky. Every lit window looked fragile. Every stone looked as if it were waiting, holding its breath.Behind us, Garren wrapped Tobin's body in a dark cloth. The sight twisted something in my chest. That man had served my house, faithfully I might add, and when he died someone had made certain that the house never truly released him. I had a suspicion of who that person might be and the evidence that I have collected it pointing in that direction but I need direct proof to make my heart at ease. Someone had known, even in death, his body could still be useful if the right oath was left unbroken.Tobin Marr wasn

Asher.Something answered from the other side of Sector Four. It wasn't a voice, but a howl. Every warrior went still when the sound echoed through the trees just beyond the broken shimmer. The sound sank into my bones before my mind could name it.Savannah's hand tightened around mine. The broken council seal still rested in my other palm, blackened wax pressed against my skin. Silas Vane's crest stared up at me in the moonlight.Proof... but not enough. It would never be enough for men like him, who had the backing of the council and old laws. The howl rose again, longer this time, dragging through the trees. My body went cold.I knew the sound, or atleast the shape of it.The rise. The break. The deep, familiar ache buried beneath all that pain. But it was wrong. It seemed forced. As if someone had taken a memory and shoved it into a throat that no longer remembered how to hold it. Nero surged beneath my skin."That is wolf... We must protect." He wasn't wrong, but it wasn't

SavannahThere wasn't a better word for it. Screamed. The wardline screamed. It wasn't a howl or a crack. Not the deep, uneasy hum I had felt beneath the floors of the estate.It. Screamed. The sound tore through the trees, through the snow, even through the frozen ground beneath my boots. Every wolf around me flinched. Even Asher. His shoulders tightened, claw already pushed through his fingers, his body planted between me and basically the zombie standing at the edge of Sector Four.Tobin Marr.Or that who they said he was.The thing wearing his body stood with one hand raised, palm outward. Something pulsed under his skin like a wound that was breathing. The wardline shimmered around him. Gold. Gray. Wrong, parting as if it hated itself for obeying.I sucked in a sharp breath. My pendant burned against my chest."Asher..." I whispered, pressing a hand over it."I know."His voice rough. Not scared. But furious. Protective. Close to letting Nero run rampant with teeth and no patien

AsherFor a terrible moment, I saw only the words.Little Luna.Scratched into the inside of the coffin's lid.Not carved with a blade. Not written in ink.Scratched.Dragged into the wood by something sharp enough to splinter the oak but patient enough to make sure we would be able to understand.I felt Savannah go utterly still beside me. I felt the moment she stopped breathing. My hand found hers before I thought to move. Her fingers were cold. Too cold. I closed mine around them and stepped half in front of her, using my body like a shield so she wouldn't see the words. It didn't work. She had already seen them. The name that Valtheris called her in the vision now stared up from a dead man's empty grave.Nero rose so fast beneath my skin that my bones ached."BLOOD."Not a word.A demand.Garren and Ilyra shifted back as my power rolled through the cemetery. Snow stirred over the graves. the lantern flames bent low, trembling toward the ground.Rowan's voice cut through the dark.

MabelTobin Marr's name should not have been on anything. Not a ward report. A patrol legder. Not even beneath Silas Vane's signature as if the dead had suddenly taken up ink and duty again.I stared at the folded report on the table, and for a deep, irritating moment, I had nothing sharp to say."Tobin Marr couldn't have signed those reports." I said.Asher's voice dropped. "You're certain?""One hundred percent.""How?"The answer rose through me like an old bruise.Because I had seen him, knelt beside him as I washed the ward ash from his hair and blood from his face. Because I wrapped his body myself while everyone around me argued about rogues and revenge."I was the one to prepare him for burial." I said. The room changed after that.Caius went quiet in the doorway. Savannah's hand tightened around Asher's."If he's dead..." Savannah whispered, "how did his name appear on reports from..." She paused and looked a the paper in Asher's hands, "three weeks ago?""That I do not know

SavannahBy the time we were ready to leave the medical wing, the orders were given. Caius was to find the warkeepers without making it look like he was finding anyone at all. Mabel was to dig through old records for permissions buried beneath years of council dust. Rowan was to stay exactly where he was, pretending to sit down.No one had liked their orders but everyone obeyed them anyways. Rowan's glare followed us to the door."I can feel you glaring Row." Asher said without turning around."I heard you the first time." "Then obey the first time.""I am sitting aren't I?" "You are leaning forward like a problem waiting to happen."Caius, already halfway out the opposite door with one hand pressed tightly to his side, muttered, "To be fair, this is his natural state."Rowan shot him a look sharp enough to cut cloth. Caius quickened his pace and disappeared around the corner. Mabel snapped her fingers at Rowan. "Hey now. Back against the chair, or I start using straps.""You wo
