Chapter 5

Author: Alisha
Aria's POV

The next day after lunch, I drove over to Ethan's parents' house. Felicia and Keiran had always been kind to me, but today I wasn't there for a visit. I brought the moonstone necklace Felicia had given me at our wedding—the one she'd called a family heirloom, passed down through generations.

The house was quiet when I arrived, and the staff told me Felicia and Keiran had left for Bali that morning. They wouldn't be back for a month. I handed the necklace to the housekeeper and left without another word.

When I got home, Ethan was sprawled on the couch with gift boxes piled on the coffee table. He glanced up from his phone as I walked in.

"The housekeeper called. You returned the heirloom?"

"Yeah."

He sighed and walked over to me. "Still mad? Come on, I got you all these gifts. Can't you forgive me just this once? I'm sorry, my luna."

Even after I'd returned his family's heirloom, his first thought was that I was still angry. It didn't occur to him that I wanted to cut him entirely out of my life.

He was so sure of himself, so certain that I loved him and would never leave. That's why he could be so reckless, why he thought we could have an open relationship, and why he kept parading other omegas around, breaking my heart over and over.

I didn't answer. I just looked at the familiar logo on the boxes, and something cold twisted in my chest. "The things I want have to be mine alone."

Lily had texted me earlier, showing off the jewelry Ethan had bought her—from the same brand.

Ethan didn't even look embarrassed. "Aria, you've got it wrong. I really wanted to apologize, so I asked Lily to help me pick something out. She liked what we found, so I bought two sets. Don't make a big deal out of nothing, okay? We're mates, bonded for life."

I swept my arm across the table and sent the boxes crashing to the floor. "You can buy endless gifts and split your love into a thousand pieces, can't you? Ethan, I only regret—"

I regret ever believing you.

I didn't finish, but Ethan understood. His expression shifted, and he grabbed my hand. "Aria, you have to know—you're the only one I really care about. I wouldn't have marked you in front of the Moon Goddess and made you my mate if that wasn't true. Just give me a few more years. Once I've had my fun, I'll come back to you. I'll be yours alone."

The same empty promises, over and over.

I didn't want to hear any more of it.

I pulled my hand away, my voice flat. "Fine. I'll wait."

My calm tone reassured him. His face relaxed, and I could tell he thought I'd given in again, that I was willing to sit around while he played with other women.

He had no idea I was just counting down the days until our mate bond broke.

Since my birthday was coming up soon, and even though Felicia and Keiran were traveling abroad, they still remembered. They had someone deliver an expensive crown as my birthday gift.

When I got the message, I wanted to tell them I'd taken the severing potion and was planning to break the mate bond. But I didn't want to ruin their vacation, so I kept quiet.

I came home and pushed open the door, and there was Lily with the gift already unwrapped. She had that dazzling crown sitting on her head.

The moment she saw me, panic flashed across her face, and she put on this timid, frightened look. "Luna, what are you doing here?"

I wasn't interested in watching her little performance. I walked over and reached up to take the crown off her head. "That's mine."

Something jealous and bitter flickered in Lily's eyes, and she grabbed onto the Luna's crown with both hands. She wouldn't let go.

I was about to release it when I saw her deliberately press her finger down onto the sharp silverstone at the top.

Bright red blood welled up from her fingertip, and she immediately went limp and collapsed onto the couch. She started crying softly.

"Luna, I just thought the crown was beautiful and wanted to look at it a little longer. Why would you do this to me?"

I hadn't even figured out what game she was playing when someone shoved me hard. My back slammed into the edge of the table, and my forehead hit the surface. Something warm instantly trickled down from my brow bone.

The metallic scent of blood spread through the air.

I sucked in a sharp breath and looked up to see Ethan hovering over Lily, asking her in a low voice if she was okay.

He didn't even glance at me. His entire focus was on Lily.

That's when I finally understood what performance Lily had just put on.

I got up from the floor, trembling, and bent down to pick up the blood-stained crown. I held it out to Lily.

Ethan thought I was showing off and asserting my position as Luna. His pheromones started going wild, and the scent of pine and ice carried a clear warning.

But I didn't give him a chance to explode. "If you like it so much, you can have it. Take it."

Lily froze.

Ethan frowned too, his voice dropping low. "Mom and Dad gave that to you."

To me? No. They gave it to Ethan's Luna.

And I wouldn't be that much longer.

I set the crown on the table, my voice eerily calm. "I'm particular about cleanliness. Blood-stained things are bad luck. It's hers now."

I turned and walked out without looking back.

Behind me, I could hear Ethan speaking softly to Lily. I caught him saying, "Why is she acting so strange today?"

I stopped in the hallway and touched the wound on my forehead.

Before, whenever I got hurt, Ethan would notice immediately. He'd gently lick my wounds with his tongue to help them heal.

Now, he didn't even notice I was bleeding.

I let out a bitter laugh and stepped into the elevator.

Aria's POVThe small space went quiet for way too long.I stared at the silent man across from me, and I could feel my chest getting tighter by the second. If I stayed here much longer, I was going to suffocate. But I couldn't just run away, so I kept trying to pump myself up in my head, telling myself I could handle this.My hands were starting to go numb when Cameron finally showed up.He took one look at the scene and knew exactly what was happening. His eyebrow shot up, and he stepped right in front of me, putting himself between us."Damien, I already told you about me and Aria. Why are you scaring her?"He'd told him already?I looked up at Cameron without thinking. When their eyes met, Damien's tone softened a bit."That was just your side of the story. This is an important mate bond we're talking about, so I needed to verify things for myself."He paused and looked at me. "My brother said you're the bravest she-wolf he's ever met, and I can see he wasn't lying."I could tell th

Aria's POVThirty thousand feet up, soft clouds drifted past the window, close enough that I could almost reach out and touch them.I'd only dozed off for a bit, but when I opened my eyes, Cameron was staring right at me without blinking.I checked my phone and saw that only two hours had passed, and I couldn't help frowning. The second he noticed my expression, Cameron quickly handed me a cup of warm water he'd already prepared, and his voice came out tight with nerves."Did you have a nightmare? Or... was it a bad dream about something?"I was thirsty anyway, so I took the cup and drank a few gulps.I stared out the window for a while, and when I finally looked back, Cameron had this pitiful, hurt look on his face."Aria, I came clean about everything. Why won't you talk to me? Are you still mad at me?"That's when I realized I hadn't said a single word to him this whole time.At first, I'd been too shocked by everything he'd told me, my mind spinning through all the things that had

Aria's POV"The first time we met wasn't at that bar," Cameron said. "It was a month before that, at a pack gathering. You came with Ethan, but halfway through the night, he ditched you to dance with some she-wolf, and you sat alone in the corner drinking by yourself. Every wolf there was gossiping about you two through the pack link."His voice remained light, as if he were telling someone else's story. But I remembered that night clearly—it was the first time Ethan had humiliated me so publicly."I didn't really remember your name until you got drunk and smashed a bottle against Ethan's shoulder. The way you swung that bottle was so clean and decisive, and the things you said cut deep—you called him 'a waste of space who couldn't even measure up to a rogue Alpha.' Every wolf in the room went dead silent. You just ignored them all, grabbed your dress, and walked out like you owned the place. I couldn't forget that moment if I tried."Heat crept up my face. I barely remembered anything

Aria's POVWhile I stood there frozen, Ethan shoved Cameron back and raised his fist to strike—but then he looked up and saw me standing on the planter. He dropped his hand immediately and pushed through the crowd toward me."Aria!" His eyes lit up the second they found mine. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming to Switzerland? Do you have any idea how worried I've been? I couldn't find you anywhere, and I thought something happened to you—"I stepped down from the planter and looked at him calmly, my expression giving nothing away."Where I go isn't your business anymore. And I didn't come here alone—I came with my fiancé.""Fiancé?" Ethan's voice sounded hollow and broken, like someone had just driven a silver blade straight through his heart.I nodded slowly and waved Cameron over. "Cameron."The aggressive Alpha energy Cameron had been radiating a second ago vanished instantly, and he jogged over to my side. He blinked up at me with those innocent eyes and took my hand. "Aria, y

Ethan's POVI knew Lily had been outside all night. She'd been circling the house for hours, but she couldn't get in. The bond between us wouldn't let her cross the threshold—not anymore. The cold autumn air seemed to knock some sense into her, at least. By dawn, she was running a low fever, and her legs kept giving out. She wouldn't stop crying, and my phone kept lighting up with her pathetic messages begging me to let her in.I ignored every single one.The next day, the second I opened the door, Lily jolted awake—she'd barely been sleeping anyway. Her eyes flew open, and when she saw me heading for the car, she scrambled to her feet and grabbed my arm. Those eyes that used to get her whatever she wanted filled with tears again, and her voice came out all broken and pitiful. "Ethan, look at my face. Aria clawed me, and she said if I told you about it, she'd make it worse. Please, you have to—"I looked at her coldly, and my voice came out flat and hard—nothing like the way I used to

Aria's POVI watched Lily push herself off the ground, one hand braced against the dirt as she struggled to her feet. She started to go after him, but then something made her pause. She whipped around to face me, and that smug little smile spread across her face."Aria, I told you before—you don't stand a chance against me. You never did."Her voice dripped with triumph, and I could feel my wolf stirring inside me.I didn't say anything. I just took my time walking down the stone steps, one slow step after another, until I was standing right in front of her.I had half a head on Lily, so when I tilted my chin down, I could see every bit of that arrogant fire burning in her eyes.My grandmother's pocket watch—the one she'd deliberately pushed into the lake. This past year, she'd humiliated me at every turn, made sure I knew my place, made sure everyone knew I was nothing.I flexed my fingers and rolled my knuckles, keeping that
