Nivia POV.
"This bitch here thinks she can snatch you away from me!" Claire thundered. "I-I wasn't trying to snatch him away," I stuttered, trying to explain. "Then explain the rubbish you wrote here," She waved the letter in my face. "You're confessing your love to a guy when you know he is taken." "What?" Everyone asked, surprised. All the guys from the football team were present. Hot and sweaty from a practice on the field. Some female cheerleaders had also come into the male changing room with them. And they were all looking at me like I was the devil. I opened my mouth to speak, but my throat had gone dry, and my tongue felt heavy. I wanted to say that it was a harmless note. I was only telling him how much I admired and respected him. Also, I had no expectations. But the multiple sets of eyes fixed on me, with everyone gossiping in hushed tones, made me too nervous to speak. As captain of the football team and head of the cheerleader group, Claire and Justin, were obviously close. The rumors on the lips of the other students were that they could be fated mates. But we couldn't know for sure until the mating festival when we all came of age and found the one destined for us. "No, that can't be right," Justin frowned and collected the note from her. As he read through it, I saw his face harden and his brows furrow. "What is wrong with you? Are you trying to come between me and Claire?" He asked, crumpling the letter in his hand. "But I-" I tried to say something, anything. "You wanted my attention, now you have it," he said, sparing me a look. "What did you hope to achieve with this note?" "I just wanted to be fr-" I started to say, but he cut me off abruptly. "Just save it!" He spat out with annoyance. "Who do you think you are to try to come between us? Even if I were not with Claire, I would never give you a second thought." "I only wanted to be your friend," I managed to say in my defense. I felt so ashamed, tears stung my eyes at his outburst of anger. "The albino girl wants the Alpha's son!" Kyle, one of the boys on the team, snickered. "The audacity!" Claire's friend, Sonia, who was among the cheerleaders exclaimed from the crowd. I felt humiliated. Before coming here, I already anticipated how things would go. I expected a rejection, silence, or a small warning. Never did I think any of the above would be happening in front of everyone. "I liked you better when you were quiet and invisible. Now, you make me sick!" He threw the letter at my feet and turned to leave. "Justin, wait!" I lunged at him. Wanting to say something to clear up the misunderstanding. But Claire grabbed me by my hair. Pulling strongly on it, she shoved me to the ground. I fell on the floor, my legs sprawled out as my skirt hiked up my lap, revealing a mark on my left thigh. "The albino white rat has a crescent moon birthmark. You belong in a lab, you wolfless, strange girl," Claire laughed, and the other guys joined in to laugh at me. The tears I was desperately fighting, finally blurred my eyes and streamed down my cheeks as I bowed my head in shame. Just before I covered my face with my hands, I saw Justin turn around and stare at the mark on my lap. I could be mistaken, but I think I saw his eyes widen with shock. My hands covered my eyes, blinding me to the irritation on their faces, and I tried to block out the sounds of their mocking laughter. To say that I was ashamed was putting it mildly. I was mortified by the ripple effect it would have. Before the end of the day, the news would have spread like wildfire among the students, and I couldn't handle the negative attention that would come as a result of it. Gradually, footsteps started to move around, indicating that they were taking their leave. Just before Claire left, I felt her breath on my neck, as she bent low to whisper into my ear, "My little advice to you, stay away from Justin." With that being said, I heard her shoes click on the tiles as she left the room. For a moment, I sat there like that, dazed. Tears ran down my cheeks in torrents. What did I do that was so wrong? Was it a crime to tell someone you liked them and that you admired certain qualities about them? We all were not mated, and the mating festival was in two days. Before the ceremony, every relationship among us teenagers was inconsequential and held no value. When that day comes, Justin could be bound to another and Claire would not be able to do anything about it. I was still crying silently to myself when a hand landed on my shoulder. I looked up to see my best friend, Mateo standing above me with a sad expression that said: 'I told you so.' He had probably been watching the entire scene play out. We've been friends since 9th grade as freshmen and Matty, like I was fond of calling him, was a nerd as well. But unlike me, he was a hot-looking nerd. He was tall, almost as tall as Justin. Even though he didn't play any sport, he was well-built with nice muscles. He had jet-black hair that fell to his face and hazel eyes that were intense and striking. His only giveaway as a nerd was the glasses he wore, which hid those otherwise, gorgeous-looking eyes. He was so good-looking that sometimes, I wondered how he was friends with me. "You were right, it went badly," I told him. "I hate to be the one to say I told you so," he said gently. "But I am glad you can now move on from your crush." "I guess I'll just wait for the mating festival and see who I end up with," I said in defeat, then laughed bitterly. "Who would want a wolfless, weird albino girl for a mate?" "You might be surprised," He winked at me, a glint entering his eyes. Then I felt the fine hairs on my neck stand and a chill creep up my spine. I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching me from behind. Unsure, I tilted my head backward... And that was when I saw him. Justin Reynolds, the Alpha's son of the Red Moon Pack. The most popular boy at our school and the captain of the football team. Stood in the hallway, at the door's threshold. Staring at me. His gaze was hot and smoldering.Principal Jaxon POV.What the hell am I doing?I wondered as I left my students outside the gates and walked back to the assembly hall. That witch better know what heck she was doing.I was sending my students out into the forest in this cold all because she sensed that the child was among them.If she was so full of power, why couldn't she just point out the child?I was risking my son's safety, as well as the safety of the children in my school. Their parents would be mad at me if anything happened to them. Most of the children had prominent parents in our community. Take, for instance, Claire's father, my Beta, he would go berserk if he knew I sent his daughter off into the woods with a sprained ankle. What of David's father, Justice Lukeman? I was taking a risk by letting that witch have her way in my school.I got into the assembly hall and found her sitting on a chair alone and staring into the space in front of her.Her lips moved as though she were communicating with someone
Nivia POV.I exhaled a breath.I didn't know which was more discomfiting. The knowledge that there was another game after this game, or that she continued to call us children."What game are we playing next?" David, Rachel's mate and new boyfriend asked."The next game is called 'Find the Ball," Miss Antoinette said.Oh, so we're moving from passing the ball to finding the ball? What were we? Toddlers?Alpha Jaxon could find other better ways to waste our precious time."In this next game," she continued, "You must find my ball and bring it back to me. The person who finds it first would get a special reward."Okay... That got me interested. I liked the sound of a reward."Why do we need to find the ball when it's right here with you?" Sonia inquired."Is it?" The witch blew on the ball and we watched it float in the air, then fly out the window.Through the open windows, we could see the ball fly away, through the school compound and over the fence, disappearing into the woods outsi
Maya POV."Before we start the game, we need to rearrange our sitting positions," The witch leader continued. "Boys to my right and girls to my left."I frowned. What type of game required us to change our seats?"Why does she want to play a game with us?" I whispered low."You should be more concerned with what a witch is doing in our school," Justin mumbled beside me.I looked around and saw boys leaving their seats on the left to go to the right and girls swapping seats as well."Shouldn't you go to the other side?" I glanced beside me at him."I like where I'm seated, don't feel like leaving," he muttered. As if on cue, the witch stumped her metal rod on the ground, "Up children, make it snappy."Reluctantly, he got up and moved over to the other side.Once again, I was left alone in the back seat. When the movements stopped and everyone was seated, the witch reached into the sleeve of her dress and brought out a small white pearl."We're going to play pass the ball," she announc
Nivia POV.Today was a school day and we were supposed to be in class having lessons. But the school speakers had blasted from every corner, summoning all the students to the assembly hall.We were all seated in the hall, in our usual friendly cliques, and were waiting to be addressed."What now?" I saw a student in front of my seat grumbling. "I hope Alpha Jaxon is not calling us here to talk about the escortion fees.""He takes a lot of money from us while giving a free ride to the scholarship freebies," another in their group sneered.I was a scholarship freebie, so that made me feel uncomfortable."Can we move to the back?" I said to Mateo, who was seated beside me."No, let's stay here," he said crisply.I wanted to insist, but decided to stay put. Mateo was doing that thing again, where he was stiff and non-communicative.And I knew it was because of what happened with Justin.Yesterday, he told me to wait for him while he went to class to get his books. Somehow, I got caught up
Principal Jaxon POV. "You're welcome, Miss Antoinette," I said watching her back as she gazed out the window of my office. She didn't respond, she continued to look out the window at the falling snow. "To what do I owe the pleasure of this unexpected visit?" I asked, watching the powerful leader of the Wiccae clan, Miss Antoinette, look out the window. She had appeared on my doorstep at the early hours of the morning around 5a.m., insisting that I take her to the school grounds. My wife, the Luna of my pack, pleaded that she at least stay for breakfast before we left. It was not right for an important guest, such as her to come visiting my home and leave without a cup of tea. So here we were, four hours later, in my office at the academy. "Snow in July, what a beautiful sight," were the only words that left her lips. I knew something was up. She was not a regular guest who came calling when there was nothing important. The last time I saw her was eighteen years ago when this s
Nivia POV.It was 6. a.m. in the morning when my alarm woke me.I stirred and sat up in bed.Today was Tuesday, another day of the week. I barely had an hour to get showered and get ready for school.Breakfast was served at 7 o'clock and classes began by 8.I felt a wintry cold sip into me and was reluctant to leave the warm comfort of my blankets.Knowing I had no choice but to get up, I swung my legs down from the bed and slipped into my flipflops, that's when I noticed that the room was empty. Which was unusual, I always woke up before Rachel. My eyes moved across the room to her bed and I found it empty.Hmmm.Had she gone to the bathroom to have her shower? Where was she off to this early?I got to my feet and was about to reach for my towel when I heard voices along our corridor."Let's hurry, everyone is outside," I saw two girls run along the corridor, past my room in their nightgowns. That was when I realized that our room door was left ajar.It looked like Rachel had left t
