LOGINNivia POV.
"This bitch here thinks she can snatch you away from me!" Claire thundered. "I-I wasn't trying to snatch him away," I stuttered, trying to explain. "Then explain the rubbish you wrote here," She waved the letter in my face. "You're confessing your love to a guy when you know he is taken." "What?" Everyone asked, surprised. All the guys from the football team were present. Hot and sweaty from a practice on the field. Some female cheerleaders had also come into the male changing room with them. And they were all looking at me like I was the devil. I opened my mouth to speak, but my throat had gone dry, and my tongue felt heavy. I wanted to say that it was a harmless note. I was only telling him how much I admired and respected him. Also, I had no expectations. But the multiple sets of eyes fixed on me, with everyone gossiping in hushed tones, made me too nervous to speak. As captain of the football team and head of the cheerleader group, Claire and Justin, were obviously close. The rumors on the lips of the other students were that they could be fated mates. But we couldn't know for sure until the mating festival when we all came of age and found the one destined for us. "No, that can't be right," Justin frowned and collected the note from her. As he read through it, I saw his face harden and his brows furrow. "What is wrong with you? Are you trying to come between me and Claire?" He asked, crumpling the letter in his hand. "But I-" I tried to say something, anything. "You wanted my attention, now you have it," he said, sparing me a look. "What did you hope to achieve with this note?" "I just wanted to be fr-" I started to say, but he cut me off abruptly. "Just save it!" He spat out with annoyance. "Who do you think you are to try to come between us? Even if I were not with Claire, I would never give you a second thought." "I only wanted to be your friend," I managed to say in my defense. I felt so ashamed, tears stung my eyes at his outburst of anger. "The albino girl wants the Alpha's son!" Kyle, one of the boys on the team, snickered. "The audacity!" Claire's friend, Sonia, who was among the cheerleaders exclaimed from the crowd. I felt humiliated. Before coming here, I already anticipated how things would go. I expected a rejection, silence, or a small warning. Never did I think any of the above would be happening in front of everyone. "I liked you better when you were quiet and invisible. Now, you make me sick!" He threw the letter at my feet and turned to leave. "Justin, wait!" I lunged at him. Wanting to say something to clear up the misunderstanding. But Claire grabbed me by my hair. Pulling strongly on it, she shoved me to the ground. I fell on the floor, my legs sprawled out as my skirt hiked up my lap, revealing a mark on my left thigh. "The albino white rat has a crescent moon birthmark. You belong in a lab, you wolfless, strange girl," Claire laughed, and the other guys joined in to laugh at me. The tears I was desperately fighting, finally blurred my eyes and streamed down my cheeks as I bowed my head in shame. Just before I covered my face with my hands, I saw Justin turn around and stare at the mark on my lap. I could be mistaken, but I think I saw his eyes widen with shock. My hands covered my eyes, blinding me to the irritation on their faces, and I tried to block out the sounds of their mocking laughter. To say that I was ashamed was putting it mildly. I was mortified by the ripple effect it would have. Before the end of the day, the news would have spread like wildfire among the students, and I couldn't handle the negative attention that would come as a result of it. Gradually, footsteps started to move around, indicating that they were taking their leave. Just before Claire left, I felt her breath on my neck, as she bent low to whisper into my ear, "My little advice to you, stay away from Justin." With that being said, I heard her shoes click on the tiles as she left the room. For a moment, I sat there like that, dazed. Tears ran down my cheeks in torrents. What did I do that was so wrong? Was it a crime to tell someone you liked them and that you admired certain qualities about them? We all were not mated, and the mating festival was in two days. Before the ceremony, every relationship among us teenagers was inconsequential and held no value. When that day comes, Justin could be bound to another and Claire would not be able to do anything about it. I was still crying silently to myself when a hand landed on my shoulder. I looked up to see my best friend, Mateo standing above me with a sad expression that said: 'I told you so.' He had probably been watching the entire scene play out. We've been friends since 9th grade as freshmen and Matty, like I was fond of calling him, was a nerd as well. But unlike me, he was a hot-looking nerd. He was tall, almost as tall as Justin. Even though he didn't play any sport, he was well-built with nice muscles. He had jet-black hair that fell to his face and hazel eyes that were intense and striking. His only giveaway as a nerd was the glasses he wore, which hid those otherwise, gorgeous-looking eyes. He was so good-looking that sometimes, I wondered how he was friends with me. "You were right, it went badly," I told him. "I hate to be the one to say I told you so," he said gently. "But I am glad you can now move on from your crush." "I guess I'll just wait for the mating festival and see who I end up with," I said in defeat, then laughed bitterly. "Who would want a wolfless, weird albino girl for a mate?" "You might be surprised," He winked at me, a glint entering his eyes. Then I felt the fine hairs on my neck stand and a chill creep up my spine. I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching me from behind. Unsure, I tilted my head backward... And that was when I saw him. Justin Reynolds, the Alpha's son of the Red Moon Pack. The most popular boy at our school and the captain of the football team. Stood in the hallway, at the door's threshold. Staring at me. His gaze was hot and smoldering.Nivia's POVI fell out of the silver light and hit the ground hard.Cold marble under my palms. The smell of old wood. The soft yellow light of the beams above me. I lifted my head. The Lab.I was on the floor of the old Science Lab at Oakwood Academy. For a second, I didn't believe it. My mind couldn't hold the shift between the jungle and the confined building. My hands were shaking. My throat tasted like salt from crying in the cave.Mateo landed beside me with a low groan. Claire tumbled out next, sprawling on her back, her hair a wild tangle across her face. Justin came through last. He landed on his feet, staggered, then went still. The silver door in the air behind him closed with a soft snap. The laboratory was warm. Too warm after weeks of jungle air.I smiled, grinning from ear to ear.We made it. We were back, at last!"You look terrible." A voice spoke up.It was calm. Familiar. My head snapped up.Alpha Jaxon stood at the laboratory's door in a crisp white shirt with the
Justin's POVNivia knelt at the edge of the stone ring with her palm on the floor. Her hair had fallen forward and I couldn't see her face. Her shoulders shook once, and I felt that shake somewhere behind my chest before I remembered I didn't want to feel it right now.The mate bond didn't care what I wanted.I hated that. The gash on my forehead throbbed with every heartbeat. My ribs felt bruised from where the creature had knocked me down. None of that hurt as much as looking at the small curve of her spine and knowing where my hands used to fit against it.Mateo was crouched in front of her with his hand on her shoulder. His shirt was dark with dried blood. He was murmuring something to her I couldn't hear. The image slammed into me before I could stop it. Nivia in the moss. Mateo's mouth against her throat. Her fingers curled into his hair. My knuckles had cracked so loud last night I was surprised the whole forest hadn't heard.I looked away."Get up," I said, and my voice came o
Nivia's POVDawn came slowly. The silver dome around us faded on its own once the creatures stopped clawing at it and left. One moment it was there, thick and glowing, and the next it was gone. My hands dropped to my sides and I nearly dropped with them.Mateo caught me by the waist before I could hit the ground."Easy," he whispered. "I've got you."His shoulder was bleeding through his shirt. He was holding me anyway.Justin stood a few feet away with his palm pressed to the gash on his forehead. His grey eyes had been on me since the light faded, but he had not spoken a single word.Claire sat in the dirt with her arms wrapped around her knees, watching me the way you watch something you don't understand. Her mouth was pressed into a thin line.None of them was looking at me the same way they had yesterday."What was that?" Claire finally whispered."I don't know.""You have to know, Nivia. That came out of your hands.""I don't know, Claire." My voice cracked. "We were in danger.
Nivia's POV The noise started in my head like a low buzz. It came from inside me, like a wire pulled tight behind my ribs, vibrating with a warning I couldn't shape into words. My eyes flew open. The tent was dark. The kind of dark you only get in the middle of the night when the fire has almost gone out. Above me, the woven leaves of the roof rustled softly, but there was no wind. Mateo's arm was heavy around my waist. His breath was warm against my hair. Slow. Steady. He was deep asleep. I looked down at my body. My shirt was back on. So was my skirt. My boots were placed neatly beside my head. He'd carried me back. He'd dressed me before he brought me here. Something soft cracked inside me at the thought. The buzz in my head sharpened though, and I couldn't hold onto softness right now. On the other side of the tent, Claire was curled up in a tight ball under a blanket, her back to me. Her breathing was slow. Still asleep. My eyes scanned the tent. Justin's sle
Mateo's POVThe moment her lips touched mine. Fireworks exploded in my head. This wasn't like our first kiss against the tree. Or the second one in the shelter during the rain. This was different. It was softer, slower, like she meant it this time.My hand slid into her hair and I kissed her back. Gentle at first, then deeper as she opened her mouth against mine. She tasted like salt from her tears. Her hand slid down my chest and gripped the fabric of my shirt.I pulled back just enough to breathe."Niv, are you sure? Because if you're not, I'll stop right now and we'll just sit here. I mean that."She looked at me. "I don't want to think anymore, Matty. I want to feel something that's just mine. Something I chose.""You choosing me?""Right now, yes." Her voice trembled but her eyes were steady."Is it because he hurt you?" I searched her eyes."No," she shook her head. "it's because I want you." The words felt like a dream. I knew she was making this choice just for tonight. But
Mateo's POVI watched her walk into the trees.Justin's voice came from behind me, low and tight. "Let her breathe, Mateo. She needs space.""Yeah."I nodded. I meant it in the moment. She did need space. And Justin was standing there with Claire's tears still drying on his shoulder, so who was I to argue with the great Alpha's son about what Nivia needed.I stood there for a solid ten seconds. Watching the spot where the trees had swallowed her up.Then I walked after her.I found her sitting against a fallen log, arms wrapped around her knees, her forehead pressed to them. She was crying quietly, the kind that shook her shoulders and made no sound at all.I sat down beside her in the dirt, close enough that our shoulders touched. She didn't look up. I didn't say anything. Sometimes people needed to be reached for, and sometimes they needed you to just sit there and let them come to you when they were ready.I waited. After a few minutes, she wiped her face with the back of her wris
Nivia POVJustin cupped my face carefully, thumbs skimming just shy of the cut. His touch was warm.“You’re freezing,” he muttered. “Come on.”He tried to help me stand. My legs buckled. He caught me, pulling me against his chest.I let my weight fall into him for a moment, too drained to pretend I
Nivia POV.I couldn't believe what was happening. It was like a surreal dream. The wraiths shrieked again, loud and sharp around me.They clung to the edges of my mind, trying to dig in, to hold fast. Their cold burned like ice.“This is not your choice,” they snarled. “You were made for us. For j
Nivia POV.An ache welled up inside my heart. Not sharp like anger, but deep and heavy.Faces rose in my mind. The boy in the infirmary with a fever. The girl whose boils had burst and left her crying in the shower. Rachel, gritting her teeth through pain and still cracking jokes. Justin, shoulders
Nivia POV.My feet slid on the dry, powdery earth at the edge of the path. The ground there had cracked, lines webbing out like a broken plate.
