POV: Aria

The ridge wasn’t far, but every step toward it made the air feel sharper, like the forest was bracing for something I couldn’t see.

Kai moved ahead of me, slow enough that I didn’t have to rush, quick enough that I could tell he didn’t want to linger. His shoulders were tense—not visibly, not dramatically, just a subtle lift at the edges. A readiness.

“Has he been here recently?” I asked.

Kai didn’t look back. “Yes.”

“How recently?”

“Hours. Maybe less.”

My heart did something unpleasant. “Shouldn’t that worry you?”

“It does.”

“Then why are we here?”

“Because I need to know what he wants.”

“And what if what he wants is me?”

He stopped.

Just stopped, mid-stride, turning so fast I nearly walked into him.

“It is,” he said quietly. “He wants you.”

A pause.

“And you’ll learn to want nothing from him.”

Something fierce moved under his voice. Not anger. Not fear. Something protective enough to make my chest tighten.

“I’m trying,” I whispered.

“I know.” He stepped aside. “Stay close.

  • Moonlight Pact   CHAPTER 9 — THE ECHO BETWEEN US

POV: Aria / Kai / DariusAriaBy the time dusk settled over the yard, my pulse had finally stopped racing from the morning’s training. But the trees—they hadn’t calmed. They never really did anymore. The forest watched me the way someone watches a bruise they’re waiting to see darken.I wrapped my arms around myself and exhaled.“Okay. Nothing weird. Just a normal night,” I whispered.A lie. Everything felt tilted, like the world was balancing on the edge of something thin.My phone buzzed.MAYA:I’m staying at work late. Don’t burn the house down.Love u.I smiled, just barely. Then the air changed. Not colder. Not warmer.Tighter.Like the space between the trees inhaled and didn’t let go.I stepped onto the porch—slow, careful.“Kai?” I called softly. No answer. But the forest heard my voice. Something in it shifted.A crack of pressure went through my ribs—Not a call. Not Darius.Something else.An echo.Like my own instinct had ricocheted off the trees and come back sharper, lou

  • Moonlight Pact   CHAPTER 8 — BRIDGES & BOUNDARIES

POV: AriaMorning came too fast. The sun didn’t gently rise—it slapped my window like someone flicking on a light in a dark room. My head felt thick, my body heavy in that strange way that comes after a night of half-dreams, half-instinct. I knew I’d slept, but it didn’t feel like rest.I sat up, palms pressed to my eyes until stars burst in the dark. Then I let them fall.No nightmare. No heat surges. Just the low, steady sense that something in the forest had been awake with me.After a shower and something resembling breakfast, I stepped outside.Kai was on my back fence. Not sitting. Not leaning.Standing on top of it like balance meant nothing to him. Dawn light caught on the lines of his face and the edge of his jaw—sharper than yesterday, like sleep hadn’t touched him at all.He didn’t smile. But something in his eyes warmed when they landed on me.“Ready?” he asked.“No,” I said honestly. “But I’m here.”“That’s enough.”He jumped down lightly, landing with barely a sound. W

POV: AriaBy the time the sun began slipping toward evening, the adrenaline had burned out and left a heavy, hollow ache behind.I lay on my bed staring at the crack in the ceiling—the one shaped like a crooked river. When I was little, I used to follow it with my eyes and pretend it led somewhere better. Now my world felt like it had expanded too fast, and I was barely catching up.My phone buzzed beside me.MAYA:Are you SURE you’re okay??I can skip my shift & come overI typed, deleted, typed again.ME:I’m okay. Just tired. If you skip work, your boss will combust 😅Don’t get fired because of meThree dots.Disappear.Return.MAYA:Ugh fineBUT if you faint in the middle of the bookstore I’m going to be sooo offendedI snorted.ME:Promise I won’t faint at workIf it happens, I’ll pick somewhere more dramatic 😌MAYA:Drama queen.Text me later. The chat bubble vanished. The silence in my room felt too loud, too full.If I stayed in bed any longer, I’d talk myself into catastrop

  • Moonlight Pact   CHAPTER 5 – LINES WE DRAW

POV: AriaBy the time my legs stopped shaking, the sun had climbed high enough to burn pale gold through the trees. I hadn’t realized how long we’d been at it until I tried to straighten my back and something popped in protest.Kai noticed.Kai always noticed.“That’s enough for now,” he said. “You’re starting to push past what your body can hold.”“I’m fine.”“You’re stubborn,” he corrected. “Not fine.”He stepped back, giving me air, but watching carefully—like he was making sure the ground didn’t fall out from under me.“Come on,” he said. “Break.”Break.Not rest.Break.Like he knew if I stopped long enough to think, I might fall apart. We walked back toward the yard, not speaking. The air felt thinner outside the trees, like the forest had held me together more than I wanted to admit.I slipped into the house to grab water. My hands still trembled when I twisted the cap. The kitchen felt too bright, too normal, like stepping into the wrong world by accident. And taped to the fri

  • Moonlight Pact   Chapter 4: Secrets in the Shadows

(POV: Aria / Kai / Darius / Aria)AriaMaya didn’t knock. She pushed my door open with her hip, two mugs in hand, like peace offerings. Her hair stuck out in every direction, her eyes half-lidded with lack of sleep.“I made tea,” she said. “And you look like you could use it.”“I always look like that,” I muttered, but I took the mug anyway. She perched on the edge of my bed, giving me the kind of stare only a best friend can get away with. “You came in late. Again.”“I went for a walk.”“Mhm.” Her brows arched. “With who?”There were two ways to play this. I went with truth—edited. “A guy named Kai.”“New guy?” She tried for casual, but it came out closer to alarm bells.“He’s… helping me. With something.” I stirred the tea that didn’t need stirring. “It’s complicated.”“Complicated-complicated? Or I-can’t-talk-about-it-complicated?”“Both.”Her voice dropped. “Aria, something’s different. The way you turn your head, like you’re catching sounds I can’t hear. Last night you were shaki
