My birthday ended with me sitting in my balcony with my head in my hands. Jean’s words struck me hard. How could she say such a thing to me? I didn’t get it. Was she possessed by the devil when she said those things to me?

“Do I have to be like you for you to be happy? Loveless? Without a father?”

I wasn’t without a father. I had a father. Only he didn’t want me. He did not even bother to show up for my birthday. My hands found the necklace clasp and I undid it before holding it in midair. I couldn’t stop the resentment and disappointment that rapidly grew the more I stared at the necklace.

“I hate you.”

Before I could change my mind, I tossed the necklace off the balcony and went into my room. I plopped on my bed and began taking off my shoes. It hurt too much. How girls coped with this was truly beyond me. A sigh of relief escaped me when I wiggled my free toes. A refreshing moment after a long day.
