River

The restaurant was crowded. Too crowded infact.

I scanned the room automatically. Left to right. Cataloguing

Then I stopped.

I spotted her before the hostess reached me. She was already seated.

Oliver’s file had described her in a dull language of background reports. But the woman sitting at the center of the room looked nothing like the report.

She wasn’t buried into her phone, nor was she checking the time every few seconds. A single glass of water rested untouched in front of her while her gaze wandered through the restaurant—not nervously, but deliberately.

Most people waiting for someone like me rehearsed conversations in their head or searched the room every time the door opened.

She did neither of that.

“Good evening, Mr. Cassian.”

The air hostess looked very surprised to see me.

“I’ll take you to your—“

“I know where it is.”

She smiled for a fraction of a second before she stepped aside.

When I stopped beside the table she looked up.

Not a flicker of recognition.

Her dark eyes just looked at me. Assessing me.

“Ms Hale?”

She doesn’t answer immediately. Instead, she studied me with the same quiet scrutiny I’d been giving her from across the room.

“Depends,” she said.

I raised an eyebrow.

“On?”

“Who’s asking.”

“River Cassian.”

Recognition settled into her expression—not from what I look like, but from my name.

“Oh,” she said. “You are the project.”

“Project?”

“You are ten minutes late.”

No hello. Nice to meet you. Just straight to the point.

“I was begging to think you had changed your mind.”

I removed the buttons om my suit before answering. “I considered it.”

“I appreciate the honesty.”

“It was a difficult decision. And beside it rained.”

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

“So your greatest obstacle this evening was the weather?”

“For a moment.”

She tilted her head slightly.

“I’m not a project for your information. Don’t you think it’s rude to call someone that?”

“Olivers words. He called you a project like you were some kind of renovation he was doing on the side.” She picked up her glass of water. “I pictured someone different.”

“Someone less capable of getting a girlfriend yhe traditional way?”

“Someone who looked like they needed intervention.”

“Maybe I do.”

“You don’t look like you need anything. In fact, you look like you have everything.” Her eyes are steady. Unafraid. “Which makes it weird.”

“What makes it weird?”

“Are you just going to answer me with questions or are you going to talk like a normal person?”

“Who’s asking the questions now?”

“You are sitting across from me like you are reading me. Most men at least pretend to make small talk first.” She leaned back slightly. “You are not going to pretend are you?”

“No.”

“Good. I hate small talks.” She picked up the menu again. “So tell me the truth. What’s actually wrong with you?”

“Nothing is wrong with me.”

“Then why does a billionaire need to hire a girlfriend.”

“The board doesn’t like mystery.”

“You are mysterious?”

“Apparently.”

“But I don’t see you as someone who wants to be mysterious. You clearly just made a deliberate choice to not care about being seen.”

I don’t respond to that.

“So what’s your deal? Cold? Traumatized? Recently dumped and your ego can’t handle it?”

“Do you ask all your clients these questions?”

“You are not my client. You are hiring me. Which makes you the client, actually.” She flagged the waiter without looking away from me. “And yes, I asked a question that you need to answer. I should know what I’m walking into.”

The waiter appeared. She ordered without hesitation. Committed. No second thought.

I ordered the same thing.

“Here’s what I think,” she said once the waiter left, her voice quieter and more intense. “I think you are lonely and you don’t have a lot of fun in your life. And what’s life without a little fun.”

My jaw tightened.“That’s a very good thought you have there.”

“Can you please answer my questions? It’s becoming frustrating,”she said drinking water from her glass again.”I just want to know if you are actually going to do this or if you are going to spend six months of your life resenting me for existing.”

“I don’t resent you.”

“You don’t know me.”

“Oliver told you nothing. Everything you just said is the little assumption you made in your head.”

The waiter came with our food. She thanks home and dive right into her food. I stared at the way she carefully placed her napkin on her lap.

“So tell me something,” I said quietly. “Why did you accept this?”

She went completely still

I watched it happen—the shift. Her composure, which had been sharp and controlled, suddenly became something else. Something raw flickered across her face for just a second. Her eyes went distant. The confidence drained out of her shoulders. It was like watching and armor crack.

But then she shakes it off fast. She picked up her fork, steadied her breathing and looked at me.

“I was bored,” she said simply.

But that wasn’t the truth.

“You were bored,” I repeated, not believing her for a second.

The lie sat between us like something alive.

I did my research last night about her. Clearly she had no family. Her page was quite filled with what she does. But it seems to me that her company was suffering.

But I didn’t push. I let her get away with what she just told me. But I knew there was something underneath all of this. Something she was running from or running towards.

We are in silence for a moment. A different kind of silence.

The conversation resumed slowly. But my eyes never left her face. And she knew it. She felt it. Everytime she looked at me, I was already looking at her.

The hostess appeared at our table suddenly, her expression apologetic but firm.

“Mr Cassian, I’m very sorry to interrupt, but there’s someone at the door who’s insisting on seeing you. She said it’s urgent.”

I frowned. “I’m not expecting anyone.”

“She’s quite persistent. She says…”Yhe hostess hesitated, uncomfortable. “She says she’s your fiancée.”

Zara I sat near the edge of the deck, watching the coastline in the distance as the familiar resort slowly disappeared behind us. “Where are we going?” He doesn’t look up. “You’ll see.” That answer only made me more curious than I had been before. A few minutes later, something appeared in the distance. At first, I thought it was another resort. But then when the yacht moved closer, I realized it was more secluded. A private stretch of white sand curved along the coastline, it was like a villa amongst other villas. Each separated from others by enough space to offer complete privacy. Just the ocean, trees and a property in between them. “Is that….”I looked at River. He finally lifted his eyes from his phone. “What?” “Are we going there?” My mouth fell open slightly. “Yes.” He looked towards the villa. “We will be staying there till this is finally over.” The yacht moved toward the private dock. I watched the staff prepare to secure it. The yacht finally stopped and Rive

Zara I spotted River at breakfast, sitting alone at the table overlooking the ocean. As usual he looked completely unbothered by everything around him.I walked toward him with the resort brochure in my hand. “Good morning.” He lifted his eyes from his coffee. “Morning.” I pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down. “I found something interesting that we could do today.” “What?” “The resort has activities and they all look interesting. So we will be doing all of them.” He shrugged. “I’m not interested.” “If you were not interested, why are you still here? You would have left before sunrise without a word, exactly the way you came.” “I will not leave because you want me to leave.”“That’s not what I asked.” I picked up the brochure and went through it for the third time this morning. “Since you are here, you might as well do something fun for once in your life.” I flipped through the brochure. “Let’s see….” “I said I was not interested Zara.” “There is kayaking, snor

River I left Zara’s room and closed the door behind me. I stood there for a moment, staring at the handle. What the hell was wrong with me? I had been inches away from kissing her. Worse, I wanted to. I had water to know how her lips felt like against mine. I wanted to close that small distance between us and finally give in to the temptation I have been fighting since the day she stepped inside my house. But I couldn’t, because once I started, I wasn’t sure I would know when to stop. And I couldn’t afford that. I walked down the hallway and headed to the bar. Maybe a drink or two would clear my head. The bar was quieter than I had expected. A few guests sat scattered around the room, their conversations blending with soft music playing in the background. I took a seat at the bar stand. “Whiskey,” I told the bartender. He poured it and slid the glass towards me. I took a sip. But it didn’t hit me the way it normally would. I needed to occupy my mind. Zara was still in my

  • More than a billionaires contract    One breath away

Zara By the time I arrived at the resort, I had already decided that I was going to enjoy myself to the fullest. The lady at the reception welcomed me with a smile before handing me over to Ike of the resort attendants, who led me through a beautifully landscaped path toward my room. When the door opened, I stopped. “WOW.” The room was enormous. A king sized bed sat in the middle, surrounded by comfortable loungers and white umbrellas.“Okay..”Maybe coming alone wasn’t such a bad idea after all. I immediately grabbed my phone and called Elizabeth. “Finally!” “You need to see this.” I turned the camera around to give her a full room tour. “”Zara!” “I know.” “That’s your room?” “Apparently.” “Girl I would disappear if I had a room like that.” “It’s so big and beautiful.” “Make sure you enjoy every second of your stay there. Don’t think about anything.” We talked for another minute before I ended the call. There was a private pool at the side of the room. The view was

River The door closed behind Zara. I remained where I was. Unmoved and unbothered. I simply just stared at the spot where she had disappeared from. I exhaled slowly and leaned back on my chair. What the hell is wrong with me?The disappointment she had on her face just kept playing in my head. She came to my office all excited and I could have just played along with it. But I did what I knew how to do best. Act cold and pretend as if I don’t care. I rubbed my hand over my face. The truth was that I wanted to go. When she asked, my immediate instinct had been to say yes. But I just had to say no. My door opened just in time to disrupt me from my thoughts. “Sir, we are ready for you.” I simply nodded and stood up from my chair. I picked up the files on my desk and headed towards the board room. The marketing director stood at the front with a smile on her face. “Good afternoon Mr. Cassian.” I took my sweet at the end of the table. “Good afternoon.” I said, clearing my throa

  • More than a billionaires contract    Why did it hurt?

Zara I was half way through packing when I realized I had no idea what I was doing. There were clothes scattered across my bed, two pairs of shoes sitting beside my suitcase, and a small pile of things I still hadn’t decided whether I actually needed. I picked up another dress and stared at it. Then I folded it and placed it inside. This trip had been the most anticipated things for me this week. I had looked forward to it for the longest. It will just be me and Elizabeth taking a break from everything and having real fun. Speaking of Elizabeth, I picked up my phone and dialed her number. She appeared on my screen and I immediately looked away. “Elizabeth.” She laughed. “What? Haven’t you seen my boobs before?” “Can you put some clothes on?” “No. I’m in my house and I can do whatever I want. And you could do the same too. Maybe River might just walk in on you and who knows, you guys might have a good time.” “That is not happening.” “You need to get laid, girl, it’s been w
