Rain streaked through the windows of my office, forty floor above London. The city looked the way it always did—profitable, predictable, mine.
The door opened without a knock.
“You really need to learn how to knock,” I said, not looking up.
“You really need to learn how to answer your phone,” Oliver dropped into the chair across my desk like he owned it. “I called you six times.”
I set my pen down slowly. “I was busy.”
“You are always busy. It’s your entire personality at this point.” He didn’t wait for me to respond. “Tomorrow. Ten PM. Dinner. I have cleared your schedule for the evening.”
“Very thoughtful of you.”
“I do try.”
“I don’t recall approving that.”
“You don’t have to. I did it for you.”
I looked up then, meeting his eyes. Oliver was grinning.
“Who am I having dinner with?”
“Your girlfriend.”
“I don’t recall having one either.”
“Oh yes you do,” he said nodding. “It's just been two weeks . Don’t tell me that you have forgotten about her.”
“I have every right to. Judging from the fact that i never approved of her as my girlfriend.”
“She would be expecting you tomorrow night at Ember, that restaurant you said you’d never go to.”
“I never said that.”
“You said that three years ago, at a poker table when you were drunk. But let’s not go into the details of that. Her name is Zara Hale. She’s Twenty six, educated, smart enough not to ask stupid questions and definitely not going to embarrass us in public.”
I studied him for a moment.
“I’m not so sure about that last part though. But she seems perfect.
“You can’t just be making plans for me, you know that right?”
“I’m just solving your problem.”
“And what problem is that?”
“Your problem is having everyone in London wonder if you are a ghost, an alien. Five years without a public appearance. People are asking questions. You are the CEO for crying out loud. Own it. This fixes everything.”
I turned to the window, watching the rain slide down the glass. He wasn’t wrong. The board had been circling for months, whispers about why the youngest billionaire in London had become a hermit.
Speculation was always more dangerous than truth.
“Did you tell her anything about me?”
“No,” Oliver paused. “Should I have?”
“What does she think I look like?”
“Does it matter?”
I turned back to him. “Yes.”
Oliver stood up, pacing now, the restlessness taking over. “Well…everything she needs to know about you is stated in the contract. I told her you were not the romantic type and she seemed to think that was reasonable.”
“What’s her background?”
“I don’t really know. And it doesn’t matter. She doesn’t have any family drama, no addiction issues, no criminal record. Boring, actually. Perfectly boring.”
I was quiet for a moment.
“She didn’t flinch when she signed the contract. Not at the if months and neither at the living arrangements.”
I went still. “What living arrangements?”
“Yeah ... .i think you forgot to read that part. She will be living with you for six months. It doesn’t have to be anything serious. You can give her the east wing, the entire top floor, whatever you want. But yes, she’s moving in.”
I turned back at the window, thinking about why that meant. Six months in the same house with a stranger.
“That changes the dynamic,” I said slowly. “Public appearances does the talking already. Bit living in the same house? That’s proximity.”
“If you are concerned about her talking about this whole arrangement, you don’t have to be worried about that. She signed an NDA. If she breaches it, the financial penalties are substantial.”
I was already getting fed up at this point and just wanted to punch Oliver in the face.
“Zara seemed exceptionally unpredictable when we met for the first time. And I think you will find her very interesting. But she is smart enough to follow the rules and desperate enough to keep the money.
I let out a long breath.”I’ll go.”
“Brilliant.”
“One condition,” I said quietly.
“Yeah.”
“From now on, no more unexpected dates. I choose when and where I want to see her. Let me handle this my own way, because you have done enough.”
Oliver looked at the ceiling for a few seconds. “Deal. But you have to actually show up tomorrow.”
“I’ll show up.”
“And wear something that isn’t black.”
“Get out of my office.”
He was halfway to the door when I called him back. “Oliver.”
“Yes.”
“Why Ember? You know I hate crowds.”
He turned back. “Exactly. It’s the most watched restaurant. Perfect first appearance. They’ll have cameras, gossip, and your table will be at the center of the room.” He paused at the door. “By the way, you should probably know her name is Zara with a ‘Z’ and not an ‘S’. She was very specific about that.
After he left, I sat quiet in my office —-controlled, perfect silence I’d built
Zara I sat near the edge of the deck, watching the coastline in the distance as the familiar resort slowly disappeared behind us. “Where are we going?” He doesn’t look up. “You’ll see.” That answer only made me more curious than I had been before. A few minutes later, something appeared in the distance. At first, I thought it was another resort. But then when the yacht moved closer, I realized it was more secluded. A private stretch of white sand curved along the coastline, it was like a villa amongst other villas. Each separated from others by enough space to offer complete privacy. Just the ocean, trees and a property in between them. “Is that….”I looked at River. He finally lifted his eyes from his phone. “What?” “Are we going there?” My mouth fell open slightly. “Yes.” He looked towards the villa. “We will be staying there till this is finally over.” The yacht moved toward the private dock. I watched the staff prepare to secure it. The yacht finally stopped and Rive
Zara I spotted River at breakfast, sitting alone at the table overlooking the ocean. As usual he looked completely unbothered by everything around him.I walked toward him with the resort brochure in my hand. “Good morning.” He lifted his eyes from his coffee. “Morning.” I pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down. “I found something interesting that we could do today.” “What?” “The resort has activities and they all look interesting. So we will be doing all of them.” He shrugged. “I’m not interested.” “If you were not interested, why are you still here? You would have left before sunrise without a word, exactly the way you came.” “I will not leave because you want me to leave.”“That’s not what I asked.” I picked up the brochure and went through it for the third time this morning. “Since you are here, you might as well do something fun for once in your life.” I flipped through the brochure. “Let’s see….” “I said I was not interested Zara.” “There is kayaking, snor
River I left Zara’s room and closed the door behind me. I stood there for a moment, staring at the handle. What the hell was wrong with me? I had been inches away from kissing her. Worse, I wanted to. I had water to know how her lips felt like against mine. I wanted to close that small distance between us and finally give in to the temptation I have been fighting since the day she stepped inside my house. But I couldn’t, because once I started, I wasn’t sure I would know when to stop. And I couldn’t afford that. I walked down the hallway and headed to the bar. Maybe a drink or two would clear my head. The bar was quieter than I had expected. A few guests sat scattered around the room, their conversations blending with soft music playing in the background. I took a seat at the bar stand. “Whiskey,” I told the bartender. He poured it and slid the glass towards me. I took a sip. But it didn’t hit me the way it normally would. I needed to occupy my mind. Zara was still in my
Zara By the time I arrived at the resort, I had already decided that I was going to enjoy myself to the fullest. The lady at the reception welcomed me with a smile before handing me over to Ike of the resort attendants, who led me through a beautifully landscaped path toward my room. When the door opened, I stopped. “WOW.” The room was enormous. A king sized bed sat in the middle, surrounded by comfortable loungers and white umbrellas.“Okay..”Maybe coming alone wasn’t such a bad idea after all. I immediately grabbed my phone and called Elizabeth. “Finally!” “You need to see this.” I turned the camera around to give her a full room tour. “”Zara!” “I know.” “That’s your room?” “Apparently.” “Girl I would disappear if I had a room like that.” “It’s so big and beautiful.” “Make sure you enjoy every second of your stay there. Don’t think about anything.” We talked for another minute before I ended the call. There was a private pool at the side of the room. The view was
River The door closed behind Zara. I remained where I was. Unmoved and unbothered. I simply just stared at the spot where she had disappeared from. I exhaled slowly and leaned back on my chair. What the hell is wrong with me?The disappointment she had on her face just kept playing in my head. She came to my office all excited and I could have just played along with it. But I did what I knew how to do best. Act cold and pretend as if I don’t care. I rubbed my hand over my face. The truth was that I wanted to go. When she asked, my immediate instinct had been to say yes. But I just had to say no. My door opened just in time to disrupt me from my thoughts. “Sir, we are ready for you.” I simply nodded and stood up from my chair. I picked up the files on my desk and headed towards the board room. The marketing director stood at the front with a smile on her face. “Good afternoon Mr. Cassian.” I took my sweet at the end of the table. “Good afternoon.” I said, clearing my throa
Zara I was half way through packing when I realized I had no idea what I was doing. There were clothes scattered across my bed, two pairs of shoes sitting beside my suitcase, and a small pile of things I still hadn’t decided whether I actually needed. I picked up another dress and stared at it. Then I folded it and placed it inside. This trip had been the most anticipated things for me this week. I had looked forward to it for the longest. It will just be me and Elizabeth taking a break from everything and having real fun. Speaking of Elizabeth, I picked up my phone and dialed her number. She appeared on my screen and I immediately looked away. “Elizabeth.” She laughed. “What? Haven’t you seen my boobs before?” “Can you put some clothes on?” “No. I’m in my house and I can do whatever I want. And you could do the same too. Maybe River might just walk in on you and who knows, you guys might have a good time.” “That is not happening.” “You need to get laid, girl, it’s been w
