Chapter 2

Autor: Anonymous
My mother's hatred of me was not without a reason. After she gave birth to me, my father disappeared without a word.

Half a year later, he came back with divorce papers in hand and admitted he had already found someone else.

My mother, still recovering physically from the birth, sank into postpartum depression and once even thought about ending her life.

Every time she looked at my face, so much like his, it dragged her back through all that pain. From the moment I was born, what she felt for me was mostly disgust, and I never once knew what a mother's love felt like.

If Miles's father had not come into her life and pulled her out of that darkness, she probably would not be alive today.

A few years later, she had Miles, and she cherished him like a treasure. My presence only made me feel more like a burden.

If she had not held onto some last thread of pity, she probably would have dumped me on the street a long time ago.

Over the years, I tried to make myself as invisible as possible at home, so I would not disturb the happiness of their little family of three. I was terrified of actually being thrown out.

But what child in this world does not want their mother's love?

For years, I did everything I could to be good and obedient. I stayed at the top of my class, doted on Miles like a proper older brother, and never fought him for anything. Whatever he wanted, I gave up to him without question.

After every meal, I cleared the table and washed the dishes. Every night after finishing my homework, I helped my mother with the housework, doing laundry and mopping floors. Even on weekends, while other kids played outside, I sat quietly at home reading, waiting for whatever she needed from me.

I thought that if I kept this up, she would slowly come to accept me, maybe even love me.

I was wrong.

For as long as I could remember, the thing she said to me most often was, "You're just like your father, always putting on an act. God knows what kind of rot you're hiding under that pretty face."

Little by little, Miles seemed to catch on that our mother disliked me, and he found every way he could to make my life harder.

I did not want to upset her, so I put up with him. But my patience never earned me any mercy. It only made him bolder.

He would tell the kids at school I was some bastard nobody's child, so no one would play with me. Sometimes he would wait until I fell asleep, then tear up my homework, just so I would get punished by the teacher the next day. He even lied to our mother and told her I was the one bullying him.

Every time she got angry and hit me for it, he would duck behind her and shoot me a smug little look, as if to say she would only ever love one son in this life, and I was nothing but the backdrop to make him shine.

Before long, petty tricks were not enough for Miles anymore.

He went to my stepfather and told him I resented him for stealing our mother's love, and that I had deliberately hit him, when the truth was he had hurt himself falling off his bike.

That was enough to turn my once-tolerant stepfather against me too. He would point in my face and snap, "The rot runs in the family, doesn't it?" and threaten to send me to an orphanage if I ever laid a hand on his son again.

I tried to explain everything to my mother once. She did not just refuse to believe me. She accused me of slandering Miles.

I got down on my knees and begged her to believe me, but she just kicked me down. "Scott, don't push your luck. Isn't it enough that you get food and a roof over your head? Don't you know you're an outsider in this house?

"If I'd known you'd cause me this much trouble, I never should have brought a curse like you into this world."

After that, knowing my place as an outsider, I never dared say much of anything again. I just wanted to grow up as fast as I could.

What I never expected was that even after I grew up, I still could not escape Miles's clutches.

  • Mother's Ruling, My Death   Chapter 10

The officer raised his voice, stepping forward, his tone hardening. "Whether you're involved in this is still under investigation. But it was you who went to the police and falsely accused Scott Durham, wasn't it? You're the one who fabricated the evidence that made him look like a murderer!"Miles dropped to the ground, his voice shaking. "No… that's not true… you're framing me!"The officer crouched down and dropped a stack of documents in front of him. "Framing you? This is all the evidence of how you framed Scott Durham."My mother stumbled toward Miles and picked up the papers scattered in front of him, flipping through them page by page. She stared at him, the son she had always thought so gentle and harmless, in shock. "Miles, Scott was your brother! Why would you do this?"Seeing the evidence spread out for everyone to see, Miles finally dropped the act. He looked up, a cruel smile curling across his face. "How else was I supposed to get you and Scott to help me land the

A few days later, my funeral began. Miles, dressed in a black suit, helped my mother to the service. She stood in front of my headstone, tears streaming down her face, murmuring, "Scott, how could you be so cruel, leaving your mother behind like this?"Her performance fooled everyone there. Every guest who came stepped forward to comfort her, telling her to take care of herself. But I really wanted to ask her: setting the guilt aside, did she actually care whether I lived or died?Sirens blared, and a wave of police officers surrounded the funeral. Four or five older-looking officers walked straight up to her. "Are you Ms. Sullivan?"She looked rattled. "I am. Is there something I can help you with, officer?"The officer held up an arrest warrant. "We have evidence that you abused your position as a judge to obstruct justice. We need you to come with us."Miles stepped forward, blocking the officers from her. "My mother is a person of integrity. There's no way she'd do something

I shook my head. I doubted my mother was crying this hard for my sake. It was more likely just to ease her own conscience. But I was not the same obedient, spineless Scott I used to be.I had always tried so hard to be good, hoping it would make her love me a little more. Now that I was dead, I did not need her love anymore. If I could still make a sound, I would want to tell her I could never forgive her for what she had done to me, and that I had no interest in her repentance. The old me would have forgiven her the instant I saw her like this, no hesitation at all. But watching her now, I could not help feeling a strange kind of satisfaction. Her hands shook as she signed the autopsy consent form. She dropped to her knees in front of the officers, begging them to catch whoever had killed me.For a moment, I honestly could not tell if it was real or just another performance.Back home, she collapsed onto the couch like her soul had left her body.Miles came over, playing the d

My mother's attitude toward Miles was always the exact opposite of how she treated me. Even knowing full well he was faking it, she still turned right around and went home. The moment she walked in, she went to his bedside, equal parts exasperated and doting. "All right, stop pretending."Maybe being the favorite made him fearless, because the second his little act got called out, Miles dropped it, giving her a wounded look. "Mom, I was scared you loved Scott more. What if you went soft the moment you saw him and told him the truth?"She stroked his hair, her face full of affection. "Silly boy. I only love you. I won't go, I promise."Satisfied, Miles flashed her an innocent smile. This was not the first time he had faked being sick to compete for our mother's love.Back in sixth grade, we were playing soccer together when he tripped me, and I broke my leg. As soon as she heard, she rushed to the hospital.Jealous, Miles cried and told her I had tried to trip him and ended up

But fate is cruel. Not only was I framed for murder on this very day, I died because of this too.In the last second before I closed my eyes, I made a quiet wish: I hope that in my next life, my mother will spend a birthday with me that is truly mine.In the dream, she had made me a gift, the same backpack every kid at school wanted that year. She kept snapping photos of me on her phone, then posted one online with the caption: [My baby boy is another year older.]For the first time in that dream, I felt what a mother's love actually felt like. I threw my arms around her neck and told her, "Mom, I love you."Then I heard the long beep of the machine beside my hospital bed, and I left the world with a smile, at peace.Back home after the party, my mother looked troubled and went straight to her room.Miles, always quick to read a room, followed her in. "What's wrong, Mom? Are you tired?"She pulled him down to sit beside her, clearly uneasy. "Right when the party started tonight,

  • Mother's Ruling, My Death   Chapter 5

The police rushed me to the hospital, but there was nothing anyone could do. In those final moments, the only thing I could not let go of was my mother. With the last of my strength, I begged a nurse to call her for me. She hung up on me, again and again. I took my last breath without ever hearing her voice. After I closed my eyes, I fell into a long, long dream. In it, I saw myself as a child again, except this time, my mother held me the way she always held Miles, and there was a birthday cake on the table with my name on it.Miles and I were born only two days apart. But ever since he came into the world, I never once got to have a birthday of my own.Every year, my mother used the excuse that it was too much trouble to celebrate twice, so I had to share my day, moved two days early to fall on his. The cake only ever had his name written on it.Yet somehow, the same woman who claimed it was too much trouble always took a day off work for Miles's actual birthday, spending hours
