Chapter 1

After the victim's family stabbed me to death, some strange force seemed to pull my spirit straight to my mother's side.

My mother, Tricia Sullivan, was busy putting the finishing touches on a celebration dinner for her younger son, the intern lawyer Miles West, who had just been made a full associate. She hurried back and forth, making sure the staff got every last detail right.

All for a single job offer. She had booked the finest banquet hall in the city and invited every friend and relative she had, sparing no expense to make sure Miles looked good in front of everyone.

It was exactly the kind of celebration I had once hoped for when I got into a top university. All I had gotten instead was a brief two lines from her. "Well, at least the money I spent raising you wasn't wasted. Once you're successful, don't forget to pay me back."

Watching the party unfold, I could not help but envy him. My mother would never guess that Miles owed everything he had today to my death.

The dinner had barely started when her phone rang. She hung up on the unfamiliar number, again and again, until she finally lost patience and answered. "Can you scammers stop bothering me? I'm busy right now!"

There was a pause on the other end before a voice answered, "Is this Scott Durham's mother?"

Hearing my name, she froze for a second, then snapped, "What is it? Do you know that bastard?"

Once the caller had confirmation, he hurried to explain. "Ms. Sullivan, please don't misunderstand. I'm a doctor at the hospital. Scott Durham has passed away. His body is here with us, and we need you to come identify it."

She scoffed. "Is he paying you to call and lie to me because he's still sulking? Next time, tell him to come up with a better excuse. And don't waste my time with this."

The doctor sounded confused, but he kept his patience. "Ms. Sullivan, I understand this is hard to accept. We're very sorry for your loss. Your son was killed. We need your cooperation to proceed with the autopsy."

Out of patience now, she snapped, "He's in prison right now. How could he possibly be murdered? Don't feed me such a ridiculous story."

The doctor tried to say something else, but she cut him off. "If he wants to die, let him die. Today's his brother's big day, and I don't want to waste my temper on you people. Don't ruin my mood."

Then she hung up.

I had always known my mother did not love me, but I had never once lied to her face, let alone tried to scare her with some petty trick. I never imagined she would think I would fake my own death just to mess with her.

I could not help but think back on every little thing I had done, trying to earn her love. Looking at it now, all of it felt like a cruel joke.

The officer raised his voice, stepping forward, his tone hardening. "Whether you're involved in this is still under investigation. But it was you who went to the police and falsely accused Scott Durham, wasn't it? You're the one who fabricated the evidence that made him look like a murderer!"Miles dropped to the ground, his voice shaking. "No… that's not true… you're framing me!"The officer crouched down and dropped a stack of documents in front of him. "Framing you? This is all the evidence of how you framed Scott Durham."My mother stumbled toward Miles and picked up the papers scattered in front of him, flipping through them page by page. She stared at him, the son she had always thought so gentle and harmless, in shock. "Miles, Scott was your brother! Why would you do this?"Seeing the evidence spread out for everyone to see, Miles finally dropped the act. He looked up, a cruel smile curling across his face. "How else was I supposed to get you and Scott to help me land the

A few days later, my funeral began. Miles, dressed in a black suit, helped my mother to the service. She stood in front of my headstone, tears streaming down her face, murmuring, "Scott, how could you be so cruel, leaving your mother behind like this?"Her performance fooled everyone there. Every guest who came stepped forward to comfort her, telling her to take care of herself. But I really wanted to ask her: setting the guilt aside, did she actually care whether I lived or died?Sirens blared, and a wave of police officers surrounded the funeral. Four or five older-looking officers walked straight up to her. "Are you Ms. Sullivan?"She looked rattled. "I am. Is there something I can help you with, officer?"The officer held up an arrest warrant. "We have evidence that you abused your position as a judge to obstruct justice. We need you to come with us."Miles stepped forward, blocking the officers from her. "My mother is a person of integrity. There's no way she'd do something

I shook my head. I doubted my mother was crying this hard for my sake. It was more likely just to ease her own conscience. But I was not the same obedient, spineless Scott I used to be.I had always tried so hard to be good, hoping it would make her love me a little more. Now that I was dead, I did not need her love anymore. If I could still make a sound, I would want to tell her I could never forgive her for what she had done to me, and that I had no interest in her repentance. The old me would have forgiven her the instant I saw her like this, no hesitation at all. But watching her now, I could not help feeling a strange kind of satisfaction. Her hands shook as she signed the autopsy consent form. She dropped to her knees in front of the officers, begging them to catch whoever had killed me.For a moment, I honestly could not tell if it was real or just another performance.Back home, she collapsed onto the couch like her soul had left her body.Miles came over, playing the d

My mother's attitude toward Miles was always the exact opposite of how she treated me. Even knowing full well he was faking it, she still turned right around and went home. The moment she walked in, she went to his bedside, equal parts exasperated and doting. "All right, stop pretending."Maybe being the favorite made him fearless, because the second his little act got called out, Miles dropped it, giving her a wounded look. "Mom, I was scared you loved Scott more. What if you went soft the moment you saw him and told him the truth?"She stroked his hair, her face full of affection. "Silly boy. I only love you. I won't go, I promise."Satisfied, Miles flashed her an innocent smile. This was not the first time he had faked being sick to compete for our mother's love.Back in sixth grade, we were playing soccer together when he tripped me, and I broke my leg. As soon as she heard, she rushed to the hospital.Jealous, Miles cried and told her I had tried to trip him and ended up

But fate is cruel. Not only was I framed for murder on this very day, I died because of this too.In the last second before I closed my eyes, I made a quiet wish: I hope that in my next life, my mother will spend a birthday with me that is truly mine.In the dream, she had made me a gift, the same backpack every kid at school wanted that year. She kept snapping photos of me on her phone, then posted one online with the caption: [My baby boy is another year older.]For the first time in that dream, I felt what a mother's love actually felt like. I threw my arms around her neck and told her, "Mom, I love you."Then I heard the long beep of the machine beside my hospital bed, and I left the world with a smile, at peace.Back home after the party, my mother looked troubled and went straight to her room.Miles, always quick to read a room, followed her in. "What's wrong, Mom? Are you tired?"She pulled him down to sit beside her, clearly uneasy. "Right when the party started tonight,

The police rushed me to the hospital, but there was nothing anyone could do. In those final moments, the only thing I could not let go of was my mother. With the last of my strength, I begged a nurse to call her for me. She hung up on me, again and again. I took my last breath without ever hearing her voice. After I closed my eyes, I fell into a long, long dream. In it, I saw myself as a child again, except this time, my mother held me the way she always held Miles, and there was a birthday cake on the table with my name on it.Miles and I were born only two days apart. But ever since he came into the world, I never once got to have a birthday of my own.Every year, my mother used the excuse that it was too much trouble to celebrate twice, so I had to share my day, moved two days early to fall on his. The cake only ever had his name written on it.Yet somehow, the same woman who claimed it was too much trouble always took a day off work for Miles's actual birthday, spending hours
