Chapter 2

Author: Kiwifruit
“Sebastian…” Having walked the entire day without a single drop of water, my voice was raspy, the syllables scratching at my throat. “You promised me…”

Sebastian swept a disgusted glance over me from head to toe, pointing to the wall clock. “You’re late. The deal was for yesterday. It’s past midnight now.”

My lips parted, but no sound came out. He had no idea how many times I had wanted to give up, but every time the thought of him waiting for me at home in a white dress shirt crossed my mind, hope flared anew in my mind.

The thread of determination that had kept me going earlier snapped in that instant. My body went limp and I collapsed onto the floor, tears streaming down my face against my will.

Sebastian caught me with quick hands, a flicker of reluctance surfacing on his face. He scooped me up into his arms and carefully set me down on the sofa.

“Cynthia, why on earth are you so obsessed with seeing me in white dress shirts?”

Sebastian hated wearing white, yet the wardrobe was packed with white dress shirts I had bought for him.

Even though he claimed to despise me and hated me micromanaging his life, every time I bought one home, he would put it on with a stern, cold face.

In the past, whenever work wasn’t going smoothly for me, he would occasionally step into my room with an awkward posture, arms crossed over his chest.

“Here, look all you want. Stop wearing that dismal face. It’s ruining the mood.”

Whenever he did that, no matter how exhausting things were, I felt as though I could endure anything.

I didn’t answer. Reaching out, I touched the breathtaking face that haunted my dreams. Just as I was about to speak, a woman’s voice abruptly cut me off.

“Seb, you ruined all my clothes, so I had to find one of yours to put on. Why are there only white dress shirts in your closet? They don’t look good at all.”

Chloe Hart complained in a sweet, coaxing voice as she stepped out of the bedroom. She was wearing the very white dress shirt I had bought for Sebastian, her long legs covered in unmistakable marks of lovemaking.

I turned my head. The moment Chloe’s outfit came into focus, my entire frame shook, my breathing involuntarily turning heavy and ragged.

She was wearing the very same dress shirt I had bought for him.

I could tolerate her stepping all over me, or her flaunting her affection with Sebastian in my face, but she should never have touched something she had no right to touch.

I scrambled up from the couch and lunged at Chloe like a woman possessed, desperate to tear the shirt right off her body.

Chloe screamed in terror. “Cynthia, are you crazy? Seb, stop her!”

Sebastian strode over, gripping my wrist so tightly I could almost hear the bones cracking. “Cynthia, let go!”

I ignored him, dead set on stripping the white dress shirt off Chloe.

My hands trembled violently. My eyes met Sebastian’s, and he turned his head away with a flash of guilt, avoiding my gaze.

His indulgence of Chloe fueled my rage even further. But I couldn’t lay a hand on Sebastian—I was terrified of marring his face.

I broke free from his grip and threw everything I had into pulling at Chloe’s clothes.

A slap landed on Sebastian’s face.

His head was turned to the side, five vivid finger marks standing out sharply against his flawless skin.

I froze dead in my tracks, my raised hand shaking in midair.

“Have you had enough of a scene?”

I turned my head away, forcing myself to regulate my breathing. My emotions had gotten the better of me.

“What are you standing there for? Go get some ice.”

Sebastian commanded in an icy tone. Wordlessly, I turned and walked toward the refrigerator.

When I returned, his face was dark with anger. Taking in my limping stride, he snatched the ice from my hand and stuffed it into Chloe’s palm.

“Chloe can take care of me. You’d better worry about yourself. Your filthy state is an eyesore. Go clean yourself up.”

I dragged my feet toward the bathroom, pulling a necklace out from beneath my collar. Stroking it gently, I murmured under my breath:

“If only you were still here…”

My heart pounded violently inside my chest. The last time it had beaten like this was when I watched Sebastian’s bandages come off at the hospital.Refusal was on the very tip of my tongue, yet I couldn’t bring myself to utter a word.“Since you’re not saying anything, I’ll take that as a yes. Starting tomorrow, I’m going to pursue you. I won’t give up till you’re ready to accept me.“Get ready. I have persistence on my side. One day you’re gonna be mine.”He had been gone for God knows how long before I finally snapped back to reality. The wind blew softly outside. Gathering my jacket tightly around myself, I touched my flushed cheeks—they were burning hot.Sebastian kept showing up to force his presence on me, seemingly to get on my nerves. But in reality, he just wanted to keep tabs on me.“Give me a chance to make it up to you, please? I truly can’t live without you. As for being a substitute—I don’t care. It doesn’t matter in the slightest, as long as we can get back together.“Di

“Sebastian, it was wrong of me to use you as a stand-in. But over these years, I endured everything you put me through. I think that makes us even.“Just leave. Go back where you belong, keep playing the high-and-mighty Sebastian Royce, and forget about me.”Having said everything that needed to be said, I delivered my explicit eviction notice.Looking completely lost, he let out a low, self-deprecating chuckle.“Ha… I never imagined that I, Sebastian Royce, would one day end up as someone else’s substitute. How tragic. But Cynthia, I’ve genuinely fallen in love with you. Since we look so much alike, why couldn’t you just keep fooling me?”I had never expected him to utter such words. In this moment, he looked like a puppy being abandoned.“You don’t look like him anymore. That scar on your face serves as a constant reminder, telling me that you’re not him, and you could never be.“I couldn’t let go back then, but I can now. Chloe might not be a nice person, like you, her feelings are

I couldn’t help but steal another glance at him. He had such a resilient, positive mindset, a wonderful trait.“Yeah, she definitely will. I’ll take my leave now. The flowers were gorgeous today. Thank you, and I wish you all the best.”He walked me out to the hospital entrance. Without turning back around, I simply waved my hand to say farewell. At first I thought this was merely a brief interlude with a passing stranger, never expecting a second meeting.I was having a drink at a bar, and he was the featured singer on stage.“Hi, we meet again. What a coincidence.”It truly was quite the twist of fate. He sang beautifully. Unlike his everyday speaking voice, his singing was soft, soothing, a refreshing balm for the soul.He was handsome, and quite a few young girls went up to ask for his number, but he politely declined them all. When I settled the tab and was about to leave, he chased after me. “Can I have your number? I think we have a real connection going on.”I remained silent f

About half an hour passed before his assistant called back.“Mr. Royce, we found her. She flew to Paloma eight days ago.”Hanging up the phone, Sebastian played out the timeline in his head—eight days ago, that was the exact day we had broken up.He couldn’t sit still a second longer. He booked the earliest flight available and waited for dawn.Having stayed awake all night, he felt no drowsiness whatsoever. His eyes were wide open, his mind consumed by the sheer joy of seeing me again.Yet he forgot thing: Paloma was a massive city. Coupled with his inability to reach me via phone, the search would be like hunting for a needle in the ocean.I walked through every corner of Paloma, big and small. It was truly breathtaking, so much so that I wished I could stay here for the rest of my life. While I was standing by the beach and taking in the salty sea breeze, a young guy caught my attention. His steps were slow yet resolute as he waded deeper and deeper into the ocean.I sprinted over i

Everyone looked at each other in confusion, unable to figure out what was wrong with him.“Is it because Cynthia hasn’t come back to apologize? It’s been days. Normally, never mind this long, if Seb didn’t contact her for just one morning, she’d be asking around everywhere about him.”“Yeah, what’s going on? Should we give him a hand? I could barely breathe around him these days, with that mood of his.”After a quick discussion, the group decided to help Sebastian out. They dug out my phone number and dialed it over and over, but every call was greeted by an automated message.“What’s the deal? She’s really putting on airs this time. She’d better not end up playing herself into a corner.”“Forget it. Leave them be. Let’s keep partying.”When Sebastian returned home, the apartment was pitch-black, something that had never happened before. In the past, no matter how late he came home, I would always leave a light on for him, waiting up.A million lights may lit the city, but his heart wa

People around me were looking at me as if I were insane—after all, sitting alone talking to oneself looked incredibly odd.But I didn’t care. I knew that he could hear everything I said.In my daze, I drifted off to sleep and dreamed of my very first meeting with Sebastian.I first met him the first month after my lover had passed away.I spent my days drowning my sorrows in alcohol, as if doing so could make me forget everything.Stumbling out of a bar dead drunk, I was grabbed and cornered by a group of men.“Hey, what a prime little piece. What’s bothering you, gorgeous? Why don’t you come along with us? We’ll take real good care of you.”They yanked me toward a car as they spoke. Given the sheer disparity in strength between us, compounded by my limp, powerless state, I had no chance at all.My eyes zeroed in on a stone by the roadside. Just as I was calculating my odds, Sebastian walked toward us, bathed in the backlighting. He looked like him, far too much like him. Aside from th
