Chapter 1

Author: Kiwifruit
When the message arrived and I over to the archery range, Sebastian was standing in front of the target—fully geared up, with only his face exposed.

“He made a bet with someone,” one of his buddies sauntered over and kindly offered an explanation. “If he wins, that brand-new supercar is his.”

My grip tightened around my bag. It was far too dangerous.

“Wait.”

I stepped in front of Sebastian, meeting his irritated, utterly repulsed gaze.

“What? Looking to make me angry again?”

I used my best coaxing voice. “If you want it, I can buy it for you. There’s no need for the silly bet.”

Sebastian shoved me away. I stumbled back, barely regaining my footing.

“Get the hell away from me. Who knows where your dirty money comes from? I wanna keep my hands clean.”

His gang of wealthy heirs had no sense of restraint—plenty of people had been played to death in their stupid games. I stared at Sebastian’s face, gritted my teeth, and planted myself directly in front of him.

“I’ll take his place.”

Standing at his mark, my entire body trembled out of control. I squeezed my eyes shut, not daring to look as arrows hissed past my ears.

The moment the three rounds ended, my legs gave out completely, and I collapsed onto the ground.

Applause and loud jeers erupted all around.

“Hahaha! You really know her inside out! Now I see how obsessed she is with you. One slip-up and her face would’ve been ruined!”

“No kidding, man, my loss. That car is yours to take whenever you want!”

A layer of frost enveloped my heart.

So, I was the bet all along.

It didn’t matter.

I looked up at Sebastian’s untouched, flawless face and let out a quiet sigh of relief.

He laughed with pure satisfaction. The once-formidable female CEO was acting like a helpless puppy beside him, jumping at his every command. Naturally, he soaked up the crowd’s adulation, his vanity well fed.

“Let’s go. Drinks on me tonight!”

The gang flooded out of the archery range in high spirits. Upon reaching the exit, Sebastian tossed me a condescending glance.

“Cynthia, don’t you love seeing me in a white dress shirt? If you walk all the way back to the apartment from here, I’ll put on one just for you.”

One of Sebastian’s buddies glanced at my high heels and couldn’t help chiming in with pity. “Come on man, this place is over twenty miles from downtown. Won’t that ruin her feet?”

Sebastian swept a cool, dismissive glance over the guy. “What? You feeling sorry for her?”

I dug my nails into my palms. Even as every shred of my sanity screamed at me to refuse, I still heard my own trembling voice answer:

“Fine. I’ll walk back.”

So I walked over twenty miles, including a long stretch of mountain roads. By the time I reached the apartment, it was already late into the night.

The soles of my feet were raw and bloody. Ignoring my nearly paralyzed body, I opened the apartment door, my heart filled with desperate anticipation.

My gaze froze dead the moment it hit Sebastian’s bare upper body, covered in suggestive love marks.

My heart pounded violently inside my chest. The last time it had beaten like this was when I watched Sebastian’s bandages come off at the hospital.Refusal was on the very tip of my tongue, yet I couldn’t bring myself to utter a word.“Since you’re not saying anything, I’ll take that as a yes. Starting tomorrow, I’m going to pursue you. I won’t give up till you’re ready to accept me.“Get ready. I have persistence on my side. One day you’re gonna be mine.”He had been gone for God knows how long before I finally snapped back to reality. The wind blew softly outside. Gathering my jacket tightly around myself, I touched my flushed cheeks—they were burning hot.Sebastian kept showing up to force his presence on me, seemingly to get on my nerves. But in reality, he just wanted to keep tabs on me.“Give me a chance to make it up to you, please? I truly can’t live without you. As for being a substitute—I don’t care. It doesn’t matter in the slightest, as long as we can get back together.“Di

“Sebastian, it was wrong of me to use you as a stand-in. But over these years, I endured everything you put me through. I think that makes us even.“Just leave. Go back where you belong, keep playing the high-and-mighty Sebastian Royce, and forget about me.”Having said everything that needed to be said, I delivered my explicit eviction notice.Looking completely lost, he let out a low, self-deprecating chuckle.“Ha… I never imagined that I, Sebastian Royce, would one day end up as someone else’s substitute. How tragic. But Cynthia, I’ve genuinely fallen in love with you. Since we look so much alike, why couldn’t you just keep fooling me?”I had never expected him to utter such words. In this moment, he looked like a puppy being abandoned.“You don’t look like him anymore. That scar on your face serves as a constant reminder, telling me that you’re not him, and you could never be.“I couldn’t let go back then, but I can now. Chloe might not be a nice person, like you, her feelings are

I couldn’t help but steal another glance at him. He had such a resilient, positive mindset, a wonderful trait.“Yeah, she definitely will. I’ll take my leave now. The flowers were gorgeous today. Thank you, and I wish you all the best.”He walked me out to the hospital entrance. Without turning back around, I simply waved my hand to say farewell. At first I thought this was merely a brief interlude with a passing stranger, never expecting a second meeting.I was having a drink at a bar, and he was the featured singer on stage.“Hi, we meet again. What a coincidence.”It truly was quite the twist of fate. He sang beautifully. Unlike his everyday speaking voice, his singing was soft, soothing, a refreshing balm for the soul.He was handsome, and quite a few young girls went up to ask for his number, but he politely declined them all. When I settled the tab and was about to leave, he chased after me. “Can I have your number? I think we have a real connection going on.”I remained silent f

About half an hour passed before his assistant called back.“Mr. Royce, we found her. She flew to Paloma eight days ago.”Hanging up the phone, Sebastian played out the timeline in his head—eight days ago, that was the exact day we had broken up.He couldn’t sit still a second longer. He booked the earliest flight available and waited for dawn.Having stayed awake all night, he felt no drowsiness whatsoever. His eyes were wide open, his mind consumed by the sheer joy of seeing me again.Yet he forgot thing: Paloma was a massive city. Coupled with his inability to reach me via phone, the search would be like hunting for a needle in the ocean.I walked through every corner of Paloma, big and small. It was truly breathtaking, so much so that I wished I could stay here for the rest of my life. While I was standing by the beach and taking in the salty sea breeze, a young guy caught my attention. His steps were slow yet resolute as he waded deeper and deeper into the ocean.I sprinted over i

Everyone looked at each other in confusion, unable to figure out what was wrong with him.“Is it because Cynthia hasn’t come back to apologize? It’s been days. Normally, never mind this long, if Seb didn’t contact her for just one morning, she’d be asking around everywhere about him.”“Yeah, what’s going on? Should we give him a hand? I could barely breathe around him these days, with that mood of his.”After a quick discussion, the group decided to help Sebastian out. They dug out my phone number and dialed it over and over, but every call was greeted by an automated message.“What’s the deal? She’s really putting on airs this time. She’d better not end up playing herself into a corner.”“Forget it. Leave them be. Let’s keep partying.”When Sebastian returned home, the apartment was pitch-black, something that had never happened before. In the past, no matter how late he came home, I would always leave a light on for him, waiting up.A million lights may lit the city, but his heart wa

People around me were looking at me as if I were insane—after all, sitting alone talking to oneself looked incredibly odd.But I didn’t care. I knew that he could hear everything I said.In my daze, I drifted off to sleep and dreamed of my very first meeting with Sebastian.I first met him the first month after my lover had passed away.I spent my days drowning my sorrows in alcohol, as if doing so could make me forget everything.Stumbling out of a bar dead drunk, I was grabbed and cornered by a group of men.“Hey, what a prime little piece. What’s bothering you, gorgeous? Why don’t you come along with us? We’ll take real good care of you.”They yanked me toward a car as they spoke. Given the sheer disparity in strength between us, compounded by my limp, powerless state, I had no chance at all.My eyes zeroed in on a stone by the roadside. Just as I was calculating my odds, Sebastian walked toward us, bathed in the backlighting. He looked like him, far too much like him. Aside from th
