Chapter 4

Author: Kiwifruit
Having barely survived the ghastly party, I dragged my exhausted body back to my room.

My phone vibrated. Opening the notification, I felt the blood in my veins turn to ice.

It was a screenshot of an Instagram post: Sebastian had posted my lingerie photo up.

Beneath it were innumerable disgusting comments, and he had even replied to a few of them.

“How generous man, sharing this kinda photo of your girlfriend.”

“Bros before hoes. If I get a peep, so do you guys.”

“No joke, your girl has a hell of a body. Just looking at the photo gets me worked up.”

Staring at the screen, a laugh suddenly burst from my lips as tears slipped down the corners of my eyes. My heart felt as though hit by a sledgehammer, my chest suffocated.

I had underestimated how much of a bastard Sebastian could be.

I had agreed to the lingerie photo on his behalf, only to be proven a fool.

I pulled a box out from the nightstand drawer and took out a photo I had smoothed over countless times.

Tears blurred my vision, drops of it dripping onto the photo.

What on earth had I been doing all this time? Just for a familiar face, I had nearly ruined myself.

I truly had been an utter fool.

I made no effort to suppress my sobbing. Sebastian hesitated outside the door for a long time before pushing it open and stepping inside.

When our eyes met, I caught the guilty flicker hidden deep within his gaze.

So he was capable of guilt.

Sebastian’s eyes shifted downward, landing on the photo in my hands.

“Who’s that?”

He asked as his expression darkened.

I remained silent. Looking at him like this, I felt a strange flash of gratification.

His chest heaved rapidly as he suppressed his temper to ask once more:

“Who is that? Speak!”

“Who do you think?” I asked back softly.

My reaction seemed to confirm his suspicion. He let out a cold laugh.

“You’re something else. You cheated on me? Who’s the bastard? At least find a fresh face. Why would you land on my double? What game are you playing?”

I almost laughed out of my mind, hearing the idiot.

Tired with the conversation, I reached out to take the photo back, but he held it up high out of my reach.

My expression hardened. “Give it back. You’re not worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as him. Also, get out. This is my room.”

Sebastian didn’t realize that the moment he saw the photo, his heart was trembling. He was afraid.

He yanked open the wardrobe, ripping apart every single white dress shirt inside. Still unsatisfied, he trashed the entire bedroom, turning it into a wreck.

Seeing me bend over to pick up the photo from the floor, his eyes flushed blood-red. Striding over, he yanked on my nightgown.

Unable to fend him off, I could only kick and strike at him. Feeling the cold air hit my chest, I summoned every ounce of strength to land a heavy kick on him.

“Get the hell away from me! Don’t touch me!”

It was the first time I had ever been this hysterical. His movements froze, and he redirected his fury toward the photo. Reaching over, he set out to destroy it.

Paying no mind to my exposed neckline, I fought with everything I had, yet I couldn’t stop him. I could only watch helplessly as the photo was ripped to pieces.

My hands moved in frantic motions, trying to piece it back together, tears streaming down my face.

“You absolute scumbag! I hate you!”

Meeting my hatred-filled eyes, Sebastian’s hand trembled slightly.

“Fine. Let’s break up then!”

With those parting words, he slammed the door and stormed off. He didn’t return for days.

I didn’t crawl after him like I always had. It was time to end this absurd relationship.

For the first time, I felt regret. I regretted turning myself into a fool for this scumbag, and more for ever crossing paths with him at all.

But it was fine now. Everything would be resolved soon, and I would never have to see him again.

I didn’t sleep a wink that night, curling up on the sofa and sitting there till dawn.

Early next morning, one of Sebastian’s friends called to say he was wasted, calling out my name, and wanted me to pick him up.

“We broke up. Whatever happens to him has nothing to do with me.”

Calls came in one after another, accompanied by text messages from unknown numbers, all accusing me of being cold-blooded and heartless.

Without so much as reading them, I deleted and blocked every single one, winning back some peace and quiet for myself.

One afternoon, while I was packing my things, someone banged on the door.

“Cynthia, open up! Seb’s in trouble!”

I had no intention of responding, but then I heard him shout:

“Seb was drag racing at the track! We couldn’t stop him, and he got into an accident. The doctor says his face might be ruined!”

My footsteps froze. Trembling, I pulled the door open, wanting to confirm whether this was just another one of Sebastian’s sick pranks.

But the man outside grabbed me and pulled me into the car, then drove all the way to the hospital.

The moment I pushed open the ward door and saw the person lying on the bed, my legs almost gave out.

My heart pounded violently inside my chest. The last time it had beaten like this was when I watched Sebastian’s bandages come off at the hospital.Refusal was on the very tip of my tongue, yet I couldn’t bring myself to utter a word.“Since you’re not saying anything, I’ll take that as a yes. Starting tomorrow, I’m going to pursue you. I won’t give up till you’re ready to accept me.“Get ready. I have persistence on my side. One day you’re gonna be mine.”He had been gone for God knows how long before I finally snapped back to reality. The wind blew softly outside. Gathering my jacket tightly around myself, I touched my flushed cheeks—they were burning hot.Sebastian kept showing up to force his presence on me, seemingly to get on my nerves. But in reality, he just wanted to keep tabs on me.“Give me a chance to make it up to you, please? I truly can’t live without you. As for being a substitute—I don’t care. It doesn’t matter in the slightest, as long as we can get back together.“Di

“Sebastian, it was wrong of me to use you as a stand-in. But over these years, I endured everything you put me through. I think that makes us even.“Just leave. Go back where you belong, keep playing the high-and-mighty Sebastian Royce, and forget about me.”Having said everything that needed to be said, I delivered my explicit eviction notice.Looking completely lost, he let out a low, self-deprecating chuckle.“Ha… I never imagined that I, Sebastian Royce, would one day end up as someone else’s substitute. How tragic. But Cynthia, I’ve genuinely fallen in love with you. Since we look so much alike, why couldn’t you just keep fooling me?”I had never expected him to utter such words. In this moment, he looked like a puppy being abandoned.“You don’t look like him anymore. That scar on your face serves as a constant reminder, telling me that you’re not him, and you could never be.“I couldn’t let go back then, but I can now. Chloe might not be a nice person, like you, her feelings are

I couldn’t help but steal another glance at him. He had such a resilient, positive mindset, a wonderful trait.“Yeah, she definitely will. I’ll take my leave now. The flowers were gorgeous today. Thank you, and I wish you all the best.”He walked me out to the hospital entrance. Without turning back around, I simply waved my hand to say farewell. At first I thought this was merely a brief interlude with a passing stranger, never expecting a second meeting.I was having a drink at a bar, and he was the featured singer on stage.“Hi, we meet again. What a coincidence.”It truly was quite the twist of fate. He sang beautifully. Unlike his everyday speaking voice, his singing was soft, soothing, a refreshing balm for the soul.He was handsome, and quite a few young girls went up to ask for his number, but he politely declined them all. When I settled the tab and was about to leave, he chased after me. “Can I have your number? I think we have a real connection going on.”I remained silent f

About half an hour passed before his assistant called back.“Mr. Royce, we found her. She flew to Paloma eight days ago.”Hanging up the phone, Sebastian played out the timeline in his head—eight days ago, that was the exact day we had broken up.He couldn’t sit still a second longer. He booked the earliest flight available and waited for dawn.Having stayed awake all night, he felt no drowsiness whatsoever. His eyes were wide open, his mind consumed by the sheer joy of seeing me again.Yet he forgot thing: Paloma was a massive city. Coupled with his inability to reach me via phone, the search would be like hunting for a needle in the ocean.I walked through every corner of Paloma, big and small. It was truly breathtaking, so much so that I wished I could stay here for the rest of my life. While I was standing by the beach and taking in the salty sea breeze, a young guy caught my attention. His steps were slow yet resolute as he waded deeper and deeper into the ocean.I sprinted over i

Everyone looked at each other in confusion, unable to figure out what was wrong with him.“Is it because Cynthia hasn’t come back to apologize? It’s been days. Normally, never mind this long, if Seb didn’t contact her for just one morning, she’d be asking around everywhere about him.”“Yeah, what’s going on? Should we give him a hand? I could barely breathe around him these days, with that mood of his.”After a quick discussion, the group decided to help Sebastian out. They dug out my phone number and dialed it over and over, but every call was greeted by an automated message.“What’s the deal? She’s really putting on airs this time. She’d better not end up playing herself into a corner.”“Forget it. Leave them be. Let’s keep partying.”When Sebastian returned home, the apartment was pitch-black, something that had never happened before. In the past, no matter how late he came home, I would always leave a light on for him, waiting up.A million lights may lit the city, but his heart wa

People around me were looking at me as if I were insane—after all, sitting alone talking to oneself looked incredibly odd.But I didn’t care. I knew that he could hear everything I said.In my daze, I drifted off to sleep and dreamed of my very first meeting with Sebastian.I first met him the first month after my lover had passed away.I spent my days drowning my sorrows in alcohol, as if doing so could make me forget everything.Stumbling out of a bar dead drunk, I was grabbed and cornered by a group of men.“Hey, what a prime little piece. What’s bothering you, gorgeous? Why don’t you come along with us? We’ll take real good care of you.”They yanked me toward a car as they spoke. Given the sheer disparity in strength between us, compounded by my limp, powerless state, I had no chance at all.My eyes zeroed in on a stone by the roadside. Just as I was calculating my odds, Sebastian walked toward us, bathed in the backlighting. He looked like him, far too much like him. Aside from th
