I headed back to the apartment after dropping Zoe off at school.

I was halfway to the VIP elevator when Bruna popped up, her eyes gleaming with that specific look she gets when she’s carrying a piece of gossip.

In her hand was a matte black envelope with gold-ink lettering.

"Ma'am!" Bruna called out in a hushed, mafia-style whisper. "An invitation just arrived. From the neighbor in the penthouse next door—the one who moved in last week. They bought the unit in cash!"

I took the envelope

Thirty-one days.I wrote the number on the inside of my wrist in eyeliner at six that morning, studied it, and washed it off. Numbers on skin were for women who wanted to be caught. The text came at 6:12, to my real phone, from a number I didn’t know. It’s Ash. New phone. Don’t tell Z. I need to see you somewhere Marcus can’t follow. Please.Please. In ten years I had heard Ashley Linden say that word exactly twice, both times to waiters holding wine she had already sent back.I read the message three times. Then I did what I had trained myself to do with anything that made my pulse jump. Nothing. I made Zoe’s toast. I let Zachary kiss my forehead on his way out and asked whether he’d packed his charger for tomorrow.“What would I do without you?” he said.“Lose it. Constantly.”He laughed. He always laughed. On Wednesdays, Marcus drove me to Pilates. Nobody had announced this as a rule. It had simply become one, the way my route to school had become a rule, and my pharmacy, and the h

  • Mr. Billionaire, Your Wife Is Playing You!   Chapter 64: The Door at 4B

The building was on a quiet block between Madison and Park. Pre-war, limestone, the kind of place that looked expensive without trying. Doorman out front, black awning, no name on the entrance. Rhea paid the taxi two streets away and walked the rest. She had on a plain coat, sunglasses, and the flat shoes she used when she didn't want to be noticed. Her hair was pulled back. Nothing about her said Upper East Side wife. The doorman looked up when she approached. "Can I help you?" "I'm supposed to look at 4B," she said. "My friend is out of town. She asked me to check the light fixtures before she signs." He frowned. "4B isn't listed." "She said the broker already spoke to someone. Under the company name." Rhea pulled out her phone and pretended to check a message. "Something with 'Linden' or 'Holdings.' I'm not sure." The doorman hesitated, then picked up the desk phone. After a short conversation, he nodded. "Fifth floor. Elevator's through there. Don't touch anything." "Of c

Zachary had chosen my dress, a deep green number that looked expensive without appearing desperate for attention. He had always enjoyed dressing me for these occasions. A beautiful wife was apparently another accessory worth investing in.As I put on my earrings, he stood behind me, his hands settling on my waist. The familiar gesture made my stomach turn. Once, I might have leaned into him. Now I had to resist the urge to remove his hands and ask whether he'd washed them after touching someone else."Beautiful," he murmured.I caught his eyes in the mirror. "You do enjoy having something pretty beside you."Zoe spun in front of us in her navy dress, the oversized bow bouncing against her back."Do I look pretty?"Zachary scooped her up. "You look like trouble."She giggled. I watched them in the mirror, keeping my expression soft.***The ballroom was already half full when we arrived. Crystal chandeliers scattered light across the tables, a pianist played something familiar in the

The charity luncheon was held in a private room at the club on East 63rd. White tablecloths, low flowers, and the usual mix of school mothers who treated every gathering like a performance.I sat between Beatrice and Cordelia. They were already talking about the family luncheon and who had donated the better auction item. I nodded when needed and kept my answers short.Across the room, a woman I didn’t know well kept glancing toward our table. Dark hair, expensive dress, the kind of quiet confidence that came from knowing people who mattered. When Beatrice noticed her looking, she waved her over.“Celeste, come sit for a minute. You know Rhea, don’t you?”Celeste smiled and took the empty chair. “Of course. Zachary’s wife.”She said it like a title.“I hear the school is lucky to have you both involved this year,” she continued. “Zachary’s been so generous. And you… well, you’ve held everything together at home.”I smiled. “That’s one way to put it.”Celeste tilted her head. “Some wom

“Are you certain?” I asked. The PTA chairwoman hesitated. “I'm afraid so, Rhea. Zachary called yesterday. He said you were taking a step back from school responsibilities for personal reasons.”I stared at the dark window above my dressing table. “Personal reasons?”“He didn't give details. He only asked us to direct school communications to him for the time being.”My fingers tightened around the phone.“And the pickup list?”“He requested that your name be removed. The administration hasn't finalized the change because they need to verify the arrangement with both parents.”At least someone at Bellerose Manor still possessed a functioning brain.“Please don't change anything without speaking to me directly,” I said. “I'm Zoe's mother. I intend to remain involved in her school life.”“Of course. I'll speak to the administration.”After we hung up, I sat motionless for several seconds.Zachary hadn't simply decided to manage Zoe's afternoons. He had started telling people that I was s

Zachary sat at the kitchen island with his coffee and tablet while Zoe ate toast beside him, her little legs swinging under the stool. Bruna moved between the stove and the counter, humming quietly.A perfectly normal morning.I almost laughed."I've been thinking about Zoe's afternoons," Zachary said.I put a plate down. "Have you?""She has too many handoffs. School, then Bruna, then you when you get back. Sometimes Aurora's place if you're out. It's becoming messy."He tapped something on his tablet."I want her schedule tightened."Zoe stopped chewing."She seems fine to me.""She's six, Rhea. She needs consistency." He finally looked at me. "From now on, if you're not picking her up, Bruna will. No last-minute arrangements. No leaving her with friends because something came up."I glanced at Zoe. She was rubbing a patch of butter across her toast."And the evenings?""You'll be home." He said it mildly. "Unless I'm with you. I don't want her going to bed without one of us here mo
